Anti-aquaporin-4 antibody-positive dorsal midbrain syndrome.

Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) can cause various ocular motor disorders in addition to optic neuritis. Ocular motor findings associated with NMOSD include spontaneous vertical and gaze-evoked nystagmus, wall-eyed bilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia, and trochlear nerve palsy. The association between dorsal midbrain syndrome and anti-aquaporin-4 antibody seropositivity has not been reported. Here, we report a patient displaying typical dorsal midbrain syndrome and anti-aquaporin-4 antibody seropositivity.

Bilateral pupil-sparing third nerve palsies as the presenting sign of multiple sclerosis.

We report the case of a young man who presented with bilateral third nerve palsies without pupillary involvement. Brain MRI demonstrated lesions in the region of the oculomotor nerves, and further evaluation led to the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. Our case documents a rare initial clinical presentation of this demyelinating disease.

Centrally active allosteric potentiators of the M4 muscarinic acetylcholine receptor reverse amphetamine-induced hyperlocomotor activity in rats.

Previous clinical and animal studies suggest that selective activators of M(1) and/or M(4) muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (mAChRs) have potential as novel therapeutic agents for treatment of schizophrenia and Alzheimer's disease. However, highly selective centrally penetrant activators of either M(1) or M(4) have not been available, making it impossible to determine the in vivo effects of selective activation of these receptors. We previously identified VU10010 [3-amino-N-(4-chlorobenzyl)-4, 6-dimethylthieno[2,3-b]pyridine-2-carboxamide] as a potent and selective allosteric potentiator of

The roles of midbrain and diencephalic dopamine cell groups in the regulation of cataplexy in narcoleptic Dobermans.

Cataplexy, an emotion-triggered sudden loss of muscle tone specific to narcolepsy, is tightly associated with hypocretin deficiency. Using hypocretin receptor 2 gene (hcrtr 2)-mutated narcoleptic Dobermans, we have previously demonstrated that altered dopamine (DA) D(2/3) receptor mechanisms in mesencephalic DA nuclei are important for the induction of cataplexy. In the current study, we also found that the administration of D(2/3) agonists into diencephalic dopaminergic cell groups, including the area dorsal to the ventral tegmental area (DRVTA) and the periventricular gray (PVG) matter of th

Bilateral Wallerian degeneration of the middle cerebellar peduncles due to paramedian pontine infarction: MRI findings.

Wallerian degeneration is a frequent finding in lesions of the pyramidal tract, but has been observed after damage of the other fibre systems as well. Few reports exist about Wallerian degeneration of cerebellar fibres after distant lesions to the axons. Here, we report on a patient who developed degeneration of both middle cerebellar peduncles after a paramedian pontine infarction.

Neuroepithelial cysts presenting with movement disorders: two cases.

BACKGROUND: The authors present two cases of movement disorders caused by neuroepithelial cysts and highlight their management. Neuroepithelial cysts are ependymal or epithelial lined fluid collections of unknown etiology within the central nervous system parenchyma with no obvious ventricular or subarachnoid connection. Most cysts are asymptomatic, however, some present with seizures, mass effect, or rarely with movement disorders. CASE REPORTS: The first patient, a 27-year-old female, presented with progressive weakness, dystonic posturing, tremor, ballismus and choreoathetotic movements of

Significance of a small bulge on the basilar artery in patients with perimesencephalic nonaneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. Report of two cases.

Perimesencephalic nonaneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is a distinct type of hemorrhage with a characteristic bleeding pattern and an excellent clinical outcome. The cause of this benign form of SAH remains unknown. The authors report on two cases of perimesencephalic nonaneurysmal SAH in which a small bulge on the basilar artery (BA) was demonstrated on three-dimensional rotational angiography studies. Based on data from these cases, one may infer that the lesion on the BA is responsible for the SAH. The possible pathogenesis is discussed.

Fluoxetine may influence lordosis of rats through effects on midbrain 3 alpha,5 alpha-THP concentrations.

5alpha-pregnan-3alpha-ol-20-one (3alpha,5alpha-THP) in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) mediates lordosis of rodents. If fluoxetine's effects on lordosis are mediated in part by midbrain 3alpha,5alpha-THP, then fluoxetine regimens that decrease and increase lordosis would be expected to respectively lower and elevate midbrain 3alpha,5-THP levels. Experiment 1: Ovariectomized (ovx) rats received estradiol benzoate (EB; 5 micro g, SC) at 0 and 24 h and fluoxetine (20 mg/kg, IP) or vehicle 30 min before sex testing and tissue collection. Other rats received fluoxetine (10 mg/kg, IP) or vehicle fo

[Triple association of mesencephalic syndromes].

INTRODUCTION: The mesencephalic alternating syndromes or syndromes of Weber, Benedikt and Claude are uncommon in clinical practice. They are caused by a lesion in the mesencephalus which affects the third cranial nerve bundle, together with the corticospinal pathway, subthalamic nucleus and the dentato-rubric path. CLINICAL CASE: We present the case of a normotensive patient who, as a consequence of a hematoma in the mesencephalic tegmentum, had the association of these three syndromes consecutively. The clinical course was favorable, so that after three months of follow-up only paralysis of

Segmental pattern and nuclei in the human embryonic brain at stage 13.

Studies of serial sections and reconstructions of embryos at stage 13 (32) postovulatory days) revealed that the cranial neural tube in the investigated embryos possesses 15 neuromers: 1 telencephalic, 3 diencephalic, 3 mesencephalic, and 8 rhombencephalic. Within the primary efferent column all nuclei of the cranial nerves may be distinguished. Also fibers entering brain from cranial nerve ganglia form the common afferent tract. The relation of neuromers to the motor nuclei of the cranial nerves is following: M1-oculomotor, M2-trochlear, Rh2-trigeminal, Rh4-facial, Rh6-glossopharyngeal, Rh7-v

The timing and sequence of appearance of neuromeres and their derivatives in staged human embryos.

Serial sections of 215 human embryos from Carnegie stages 6-17 were investigated, and 85 graphic reconstructions were prepared. It is proposed that neuromeres be defined as morphologically identifiable transverse subdivisions perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the embryonic brain and extending onto both sides of the body. It is proposed further that primary neuromeres be redefined as the early-appearing larger divisions of the open neural folds, and secondary neuromeres as the smaller subdivisions that are found both before and after closure of the neural tube. In the light of these def

Formation of the cranial motor neurons in the absence of the floor plate.

The inductive signals for the differentiation of motor neurons in the spinal cord have been experimentally shown to arise from cells in the midventral region of the neural tube, often referred to as the floor plate, and from the notochord. Although the prevailing view is that a similar mechanism accounts for the differentiation of motor neurons in the brain stem, supporting experimental evidence is lacking. Here, using the formation of the trochlear nucleus in the midbrain of duck embryos as a model system, we report that the floor plate and the notochord are not necessary for the development

[Partial nuclear oculomotor nerve palsy, MLF syndrome, hallucinose pédonculaire due to midbrain infarction--a case report].

The authors report on a 62-year-old woman who suffered from partial nuclear oculomotor nerve palsy and the medial longitudinal fasciculus (MLF) syndrome caused by midbrain infarction. The lesion was confirmed to be in the mesencephalic tegmentum by axial sections acquired by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The lesion was located in the caudal region of the mesencephalic tegmentum by the sagittal MRI sections, and showed low signal intensity in T1-weighted images and high signal intensity in T2-weighted images. The patient exhibited bilateral ptosis due to the disturbance of caudal central nu

An ultrastructural study of ependymal cell differentiation during lizard (Gallotia galloti) midbrain development.

Ependymal cell differentiation was examined in the lizard Gallotia galloti from E31 to adult. From E31 to E34 only one type of cell could be identified making up the pseudostratified columnar neuroepithelium but by E35 to E37 three types of ependymal cell were present. The first type was a narrow, elongated, columnar cell containing rough endoplasmic reticulum filled with an amorphous ground substance similar to that of astrocytes. The second type was broader with the nucleus close to the ventricular surface with numerous lipid droplets of varying sizes in the cytoplasm. The third type had an
