Contribution of incidental exposure pathways to total beryllium exposures.

Beryllium manufacturing processes are associated with the immune-mediated chronic beryllium disease (CBO). Recent workplace epidemiological studies have been relatively unsuccessful in correlating disease with workplace air concentrations of beryllium, thereby failing to support the hypothesis that dose by the respiratory route determines the risk of disease. This has led to consideration of the hypotheses that dermal or oral exposures to beryllium can influence disease risk, either as a cause of sensitization or to induced tolerance to beryllium. If so, the control of dermal and/or ingestion

Recent advances in understanding the biomolecular basis of chronic beryllium disease: a review.

In this review we summarize the work conducted over the past decade that has advanced our knowledge of pulmonary diseases associated with exposure to beryllium that has provided a molecular-based understanding of the chemistry, immunopathology, and immunogenetics of beryllium toxicity. Beryllium is a strong and lightweight metal that generates and reflects neutrons, resists corrosion, is transparent to X-rays, and conducts electricity. Beryllium is one of the most toxic elements on the periodic table, eliciting in susceptible humans (a) an allergic immune response known as beryllium sensitizat

Environmental conditions in the Rudnaya River watershed--a compilation of Soviet and post-Soviet era sampling around a lead smelter in the Russian Far East.

The Rudnaya River valley in the Russian Far East contains a rich reserve of lead, zinc and boron and has been mined for nearly 100 years. Environmental contamination related to the area's mines and lead smelter was studied for over 30 years during the Soviet era, by members of the Pacific Geographic Institute (PGI). Due to government restrictions, much of the sampling focused on contamination of the river, the air, forests, vegetation, agricultural products and soil. Source-specific samples, such as stack emissions from the smelter, and blood lead levels from the residents and smelter workers

Evaluation of the effects of chronic occupational exposure to metallic mercury on the thyroid parenchyma and hormonal function.

INTRODUCTION: Experiments in animals exposed to mercury (Hg) in different chemical states have shown thyroid parenchymal and hormone alterations. However, these experiments did not allow the establishment of dose-response curves or provide an understanding of whether these Hg effects on the thyroid parenchyma occur in humans. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between chronic occupational exposure to metallic Hg and alterations in thyroid hormones and gland parenchyma 14 years after the last exposure. METHODS: A cross-sectional study including 55 males exposed in the past to metallic Hg

Workplace violence in trauma centers is a serious problem: an AAST Disaster Committee survey on assaults on trauma teams.

OBJECTIVE: Violence against healthcare workers (HCWs), especially in emergency departments and trauma centers (TCs), is a significant and growing problem. HCWs have the highest numbers and annual rates of workplace violence (WPV) compared with any other private industry sector. There is less information about the rates of violence and stalking against trauma providers in TCs. We hypothesized that a majority of trauma surgeons and team members have experienced deliberate assaults in their TCs. Our secondary hypothesis was that a majority of trauma providers consider WPV a significant issue in t

Experimental Investigation of Using Manganese Monoxide as a Hydrogen Sulfide Scavenger for Aqueous Drilling Fluids.

One of the most serious safety and health concerns during drilling oil and gas wells is the potential release of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) to the surface, exposing workers to high risks. Serious corrosion-related damage to handling equipment is also inevitable in the presence of H2S. Various H2S scavengers have been utilized, but each has its pros and cons; hence, research is continuing to develop an optimum and feasible scavenger. Since manganese monoxide (MnO) is a reactive metal oxide with high oxidation and absorption capabilities, it may have the potential to effectively scavenge H2S during

Lung cancer mortality and airways obstruction among metal miners exposed to silica and low levels of radon daughters.

Starting from a cross-sectional survey in 1973, the mortality of two cohorts of Sardinian metal miners was followed through December 31, 1988. In mine A, the quartz concentration in respirable dust ranged between 0.2% and 2.0% and the exposure to radon daughters averaged 0.13 working level (WL), with the highest estimated cumulative exposure around 80-120 WLM. In mine B, the silica content was much higher (6.5-29%), but exposure to radon daughters was significantly lower than in mine A. More than 98% of the overall work force in 1973 (1,741 miners) entered the cohort, providing 25,842.5 person

Respiratory symptoms and impairment in shipyard welders and caulker/burners.

All 607 men, aged 17 to 69, comprising a stratified sample of workers from one shipyard completed a respiratory questionnaire, clinical examination, and detailed spirometry. Chest radiographs were available on 332 men. Among the men aged 50-69 the prevalence of persistent cough and phlegm (chronic bronchitis) was 40%, of wheeze on most days 25%, and undue breathlessness on exertion 25%. After allowing for age the relative risk of welders and caulker/burners having these symptoms were respectively 2.8, 2.2, and 3.1 compared with other shipyard tradesmen. The effects were of comparable magnitude

Monitoring of early nephrotoxic effects of industrial chemicals.

Long-term exposure to certain industrial chemicals (e.g. heavy metals, some halogenated hydrocarbons) may cause progressive degenerative changes in the kidney, possibly leading to renal insufficiency. The screening tests most widely used to assess the integrity of the kidney (i.e. serum creatinine or BUN and the quantitative or semi-quantitative measurement of total proteinuria) lack sensitivity; they do not permit the detection of renal disturbances at a stage when removal from exposure may prevent progression of the disease process and are not suitable to determine the no-effect levels of po

Prevalence of obstructive lung disease in a general population: relation to occupational title and exposure to some airborne agents.

BACKGROUND: The importance of occupational exposure to airborne agents in the development of obstructive disease is uncertain. Studying the relation in a community population has the benefit of reducing the healthy worker effect seen in studies of working populations. METHODS: The prevalence of obstructive lung disease was examined in a Norwegian general population aged 18-73 in a two phased cross sectional survey. In the second phase a stratified sample (n = 1512) of those responding in the first phase was invited for clinical and spirometric examination (attendance rate 84%). Attenders were

Gender, self-care and toxic exposures: a narrative review of personal care product use and health equity implications.

BACKGROUND: Personal care products (PCPs) are widely used across populations, yet their composition includes a range of hazardous chemicals that pose risks to human health and the environment. Emerging evidence highlights how PCP-related exposures are not evenly distributed, but shaped by intersecting forces of gender, race and social inequality. Despite being framed as tools for empowerment and wellness, PCPs may contribute to disproportionate toxic exposures, particularly for women and girls. OBJECTIVE: This narrative review critically examines the environmental health implications of gende

A systematic review and meta-analysis of human population studies on the association between exposure to toxic environmental chemicals and left ventricular dysfunction (LVD).

BACKGROUND: Exposure to environmental chemicals has been associated with an elevated risk of heart failure (HF). However, the impact on early markers of HF, such as left ventricular dysfunction (LVD), remains limited. OBJECTIVE: To establish a foundation of evidence regarding early HF markers and their association with environmental pollutants, a systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted. METHODS: The search, conducted on October 13th, 2023, encompassed PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science without filters, focusing on observational studies reporting myocardial geometrical, structural,

Mixed-dust pneumoconiosis: Review of diagnostic and classification problems with presentation of a work-related case.

Environmental aerosolized particulates pose a potential risk to human health worldwide. Among others, high amounts of contaminants are generated especially in newly industrializing countries in the vicinity of industrial manufacturing, mining operations, but also during agricultural and natural processes. As an example of the needed multi-disciplinary diagnostic and differential diagnostic approach, we report a case of a 59-year old industrial worker who has suffered from chronic bronchitis and progressive dyspnea on exertion for 8years. He showed severe lung function impairment, a cavity in h

Glyphosate, pathways to modern diseases II: Celiac sprue and gluten intolerance.

Celiac disease, and, more generally, gluten intolerance, is a growing problem worldwide, but especially in North America and Europe, where an estimated 5% of the population now suffers from it. Symptoms include nausea, diarrhea, skin rashes, macrocytic anemia and depression. It is a multifactorial disease associated with numerous nutritional deficiencies as well as reproductive issues and increased risk to thyroid disease, kidney failure and cancer. Here, we propose that glyphosate, the active ingredient in the herbicide, Roundup(®), is the most important causal factor in this epidemic. Fish e

Parental occupational exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals and male genital malformations: a study in the Danish National Birth Cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Sex hormones closely regulate development of the male genital organs during fetal life. The hypothesis that xenobiotics may disrupt endogenous hormonal signalling has received considerable scientific attention, but human evidence is scarce. OBJECTIVES: We analyse occurrence of hypospadias and cryptorchidism according to maternal and paternal occupational exposure to possible endocrine disrupting chemicals. METHODS: We conducted a follow-up study of 45,341 male singleton deliveries in the Danish National Birth Cohort during 1997-2009. Information on work during pregnancy was obtai

Chemical analysis of World Trade Center fine particulate matter for use in toxicologic assessment.

The catastrophic destruction of the World Trade Center (WTC) on 11 September 2001 caused the release of high levels of airborne pollutants into the local environment. To assess the toxicity of fine particulate matter [particulate matter with a mass median aerodynamic diameter < 2.5 microm (PM2.5)], which may adversely affect the health of workers and residents in the area, we collected fallen dust samples on 12 and 13 September 2001 from sites within a half-mile of Ground Zero. Samples of WTC dust were sieved, aerosolized, and size-separated, and the PM2.5 fraction was isolated on filters. Her

[100 years of lead poisoning studies from a reading of articles published in La Medicina del Lavoro].

In preparing this paper we considered the articles published in La Medicina del Lavoro from 1901, its first year of publication. This scientific journal was founded in Milan, when an animated debate arose in Italy on the necessity of treating and, above all, preventing occupational diseases. In the same city, the "Clinica del Lavoro" (i.e. Institute of Occupational Medicine) was inaugurated in 1910. Its founder, Professor Luigi Devoto, had to overcome numerous obstacles caused by the hostility of the Rector of the University of Pavia--the future Nobel prize winner Camillo Golgi--and the clinic
