Otitis media with effusion in preschool children.

The incidence, prevalence, and natural history of otitis media with effusion (OME) and middle ear high negative pressure (HNP) were investigated in a group of 2 to 6 year old preschool children. The children were examined monthly over a two year period from September 1981 to August 1983. The middle ear status was assessed using a decision-tree algorithm which combined the findings of pneumatic otoscopy, tympanometry, and acoustic reflex measurements. Fifty-three percent of the children in the first year and 61% in the second year developed OME; also during the two years, HNP was documented in

ENT assessment in the integrated management of candidate for (maxillary) sinus lift.

As stated at the 1996 Consensus Conference at Babson College, a (maxillary) sinus lift is a "safe and predictable" procedure for increasing alveolar bone height in the postero-superior alveolar regions in order to allow oral rehabilitation and restore masticatory function by means of the insertion of a dental implant even in the case of an atrophic maxilla. However, the procedure has a well-known impact on the delicate homeostasis of the maxillary sinus: the concomitant presence of systemic, naso-sinusal or maxillary sinus disease may favour the development of post-operative complications (par

Economic impact of in-office pediatric tympanostomy tube placement using a tympanostomy tube delivery device in a commercially- and Medicaid-insured US population.

AIMS: Pediatric tympanostomy tube placement (TTP) is performed primarily in operating room (OR) settings under general anesthesia. Recent studies have demonstrated TTP completed in the otolaryngologist's office with a topical anesthetic and delivery device to be safe and effective. This study estimated the financial impact to commercial and Medicaid health plans by shifting pediatric TTP from the OR to an office setting. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This budget impact model estimated the financial impact of using the Hummingbirdi Tympanostomy Tube System (HTTS) for in-office pediatric tympanostomy

Otitis Media and Tympanostomy Tubes.

Acute otitis media (AOM) is an acute infection of the middle ear and, depending on the age of the child, the certainty of diagnosis, and the severity of symptoms, should be either observed closely or treated (with high-dose amoxicillin, if not allergic). Host-related risk factors such as age, sex, cleft palate, or genetic predisposition or environmental risk factors such as seasonality, day care attendance, or tobacco smoke exposure may contribute to recurrent AOM (RAOM) episodes. Tympanostomy tubes are recommended in children with RAOM and an abnormal ear examination at the time of the clinic

Treatment of otitis media with effusion in children with mucopolysaccharidoses.

Otitis media with effusion (OME) is a constant finding in children with mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS). Affected children may also present the anaesthetist with a difficult airway. A 7-year retrospective review of the management of OME in individuals with MPS was carried out. Nine patients were identified. All had a number of short-term ventilation tube insertions (one to four, mean two) before a diagnosis of MPS was made. Following diagnosis three required repeated short-term ventilation tubes insertions (two to four, mean three), four had long-term ventilation tube insertions once only. Five ch

The effects of chronic otitis media with effusion on the measurement of distortion products of otoacoustic emissions: presurgical and postsurgical examination.

This study aims to determine the influence of middle ear effusion and inserted tympanostomy tubes on the feasibility of recording and of the amplitude of distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE). Effusion in the middle ear reduces the number of measurable responses and their amplitude in the whole range of frequencies from 0.5 to 8 kHz. These changes were more distinct in mucous than in serous effusion. There was an increase in the number of measurable responses and amplitude of DPOAE after surgery. Inserted tympanostomy tubes have no influence on the feasibility of DPOAE recording but
