Prevalence of Demodex spp. in patients with chronic blepharitis.

Blepharitis is a very common disease in ophthalmology, dermatology and allergy practice. It generally follows a chronic course and is frequently associated with objective and/or subjective symptoms such as epiphora, red eye, dandruff, gritty sensation, itching, burning, photophobia, and blurred vision. The purpose of this study is to analyze the prevalence of Demodex spp. in patients with symptoms of chronic blepharitis. An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted in the period between 2016 and 2020. All patients with symptoms of chronic blepharitis who underwent a parasitological test o

Microbiome comparison of Dermanyssus gallinae populations from different farm rearing systems and the presence of common endosymbiotic bacteria at developmental stages.

The hematophagous arthropod, Dermanyssus gallinae (Poultry red mite, PRM) can cause remarkable economic losses in the poultry industry across the globe. Although overall composition of endosymbiotic bacteria has been shown in previous studies, how farm habitats influence the microbiome remains unclear. In the present study, we compared the bacterial communities of D. gallinae populations collected from the cage and free-range farms using next-generation sequences targeting the V3-V4 hypervariable region of the 16S rRNA gene. The QIIME2 pipeline was followed in bioinformatic analyses. Proteobac

Adult and Immature Stages of the New Species of the Genus Demodex (Acariformes: Demodecidae) with Data on Parasitism, Topography, and Topical Specificity of Demodecid Mites in the Yellow-Necked Mouse, Apodemus flavicollis (Rodentia: Muridae).

Demodex mollis n. sp. is described from the yellow-necked mouse, Apodemus flavicollis (Melchior, 1834), from Poland. It is a medium-sized demodecid mite (adult stages are, on average, 249 μm long) observed in the skin of the eyelid area. This new species is most similar to two other species occupying similar a microhabitat in hosts of the same genus-Demodex lacrimalis Lukoschus and Jongman, 1974 from Apodemus sylvaticus Linnaeus, 1758 and Demodex huttereri Mertens, Lukoschus and Nutting, 1983 from Apodemus agrarius (Pallas, 1771)-but it differs in the following features: the terminal palpi are

Development and validation of a fecal PCR assay for Notoedres cati and application to notoedric mange cases in bobcats (Lynx rufus) in Northern California, USA.

Notoedric mange in felids is a devastating disease caused by a hypersensitivity reaction to the mite Notoedres cati. The burrowing of the mite causes intense pruritis resulting in self-mutilation, secondary bacterial infection, and often death of affected felids if left untreated. Our understanding of how notoedric mange is maintained in felid populations, and the true geographic extent of infestations, has been hampered because wild felids are elusive and, thus, traditional diagnostic methods are difficult to implement. To create a noninvasive diagnostic test, we developed and validated a nov

Trixacarus caviae infection of guinea pigs with genetically determined differences in susceptibility to Trichostrongylus colubriformis infection.

Guinea pigs with genetically determined resistance or susceptibility to infection with the nematode parasite Trichostrongylus colubriformis were allowed to become infected with the sarcoptid mite Trixacarus caviae. Compared with nematode-susceptible guinea pigs, nematode-resistant animals had larger populations of mites and developed a more severe dermatitis, with greater mast cell hyperplasia and many more infiltrating eosinophils. The results suggest that animals bred for resistance to one parasite may have greater susceptibility to other parasites.

Studies on bovine demodecosis in northern Nigeria. Specification and host parasite relationships.

The study reported in the present paper discusses the clinical and histological picture of bovine demodecosis and the morphology of Demodex mites as seen in four cows suffering from generalized demodecosis. There were no clinical signs of other skin affections. Changes in both the number and the appearance of visible skin lesions were seen and related to the level of nutrition and the exposure to sunshine of the cattle. Histological sections of some skin nodules showed the presence of mite colonies in the hair follicles. Only adults were seen in the sebaceous glands. Microscopical study of the

Inhibitory effects of terpenes on Sarcoptes scabiei in the molting stage.

Sarcoptes scabiei is a permanent ectoparasite causing scabies in humans and sarcoptic mange in animals, resulting in significant health and economic impacts worldwide. Current treatments exhibit limited efficacy against eggs and molting mites, leading to treatment failures. Terpenes from essential oils, including carvacrol, eugenol, and geraniol, have previously shown notable acaricidal and ovicidal activity. In this study, molting Sarcoptes mites were exposed to 0.3% carvacrol, 0.9% eugenol, and 1.1% geraniol for 1 h, resulting in molt rates of 74%, 86%, and 88%, respectively, with carvacrol

Host immune responsiveness to the chigger, Eutrombicula cinnabaris.

Chigger infestation is often associated with severe cutaneous reactions. Mice were given four infestations with the pest chigger Eutrombicula cinnabaris, and each exposure was separated by a 14-day mite-free period. Mean duration of engorgement was nine to ten days for a first exposure and four to five days for a fourth exposure. An initial exposure did not elicit macroscopic changes at chigger attachment sites, while all third and fourth exposure animals had marked reactions consisting of erythema, epidermal thickening and serous exudation. Approximately 20% of second exposure animals had mac

Hematologic variables of free-living Leptodactylus luctator with and without hemoparasites and thrombidiform mites in southern Brazil.

It has been suggested that anuran amphibian parasites can cause clinical signs in situations of environmental imbalance. In the family Leptodactylidae, information about hematology is scarce, although these are well-known tools for the diagnosis and prognosis in clinical practice and potential bioindicators of environmental stress. The objective of this study is to describe Leptodactylus luctator hematology, to report the occurrence of hemoparasites and thrombidiform mites, and to compare the hematological variables under the presence and absence of these organisms. Ectoparasites and hepariniz

Genetic characterization of the mite Varroa destructor (Acari: Varroidae) collected from honey bees Apis mellifera (Hymenoptera, Apidae) in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil.

The mite Varroa destructor is an ectoparasite that is considered a major pest for beekeeping with European honey bees. However, Africanized bee colonies are less threatened by this ectoparasite, because infestation levels remain low in these bees. The low reproductive ability of female mites of the Japanese biotype (J), introduced to Brazil early in the 1970s was initially considered the main factor for the lack of virulence of this parasite on Africanized bees. In other regions of the world where the Korean (K) biotype of this mite was introduced, there have been serious problems with Varroa

Increased density of Demodex folliculorum and evidence of delayed hypersensitivity reaction in subjects with papulopustular rosacea.

BACKGROUND: Rosacea is a common chronic dermatosis that evolves in stages. The mite Demodex folliculorum has been implicated in its obscure aetiopathogenesis. AIM: To evaluate the importance of D. folliculorum in the aetiology and course of rosacea. METHODS: We studied 92 consecutive cases of papulopustular rosacea and 92 age- and sex-matched controls. Prevalence and density of D. folliculorum were estimated by microscopic examination of the expressed follicular content. Histological examination and immunohistochemical study of the inflammatory infiltrate were performed in 10 subjects (five
