Functional limitation of the masticatory system in patients with bulbar involvement in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) with bulbar dysfunction affects the motor neurons responsible for controlling the muscles in the jaw, face, soft palate, pharynx, larynx and tongue. This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the functional limitation of the jaw in patients with ALS and bulbar dysfunction who had upper motor neuron (UMN), lower motor neuron (LMN) or balanced involvement. One hundred and fifty-three patients with ALS and 23 controls were included. All participants answered using the 8-item Jaw Functional Limitation Scale (JFLS-8). Patients with ALS were grouped by neurolog

Mobility-Assisted Pseudo-MS3 Sequencing of Protein Ions.

The sequencing of intact proteins within a mass spectrometer has many benefits but is frequently limited by the fact that tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) techniques often generate poor sequence coverages when applied to protein ions. To overcome this limitation, exotic MS/MS techniques that rely on lasers and radical chemistry have been developed. These techniques generate high sequence coverages, but they require specialized instrumentation, create products through multiple dissociation mechanisms, and often require long acquisition times. Recently, we demonstrated that protein ions can be d

[Screening for temporomandibular disorders : A sensible approach?].

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are typically characterized by pain in the masticatory muscles and temporomandibular joints (TMJs) and by limitation of mandibular mobility. In June 2019, the German Society of Craniomandibular Function and Disorders presented a screening tool to identify individuals with TMDs. The assessment tool consists of patient history (three questions related to jaw pain, one question related to impaired mandibular mobility) and a clinical examination (palpation of masticatory muscles and TMJs; evaluation of maximum jaw opening; assessment of the presence o

Charge transport properties of stacking bisindenoanthrazolines: DFT studies.

Organic semiconductors to date having cofacial stacking motif are scarce compared to those having herringbone motif. Recently, Ahmed and co-workers have reported a series of novel n-type bisindenoanthrazolines (BIDAs) [Chem. Mater. 2010, 22, 5786], among which DADF and DADK adopt different slipped cofacial arrangements exhibiting distinct electron transport abilities. Here, we performed computational studies to understand the relationship between charge transport and molecular packing for these BIDAs molecules. This work focuses on the intrinsic molecular factors required for efficient and lon

Factors Impacting Early Mobilization Following Hip Fracture: An Observational Study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Hip fracture guidelines emphasize mobilization within 48 hours of surgery. The aims of this audit were to determine … s of surgery. Patients who develop delirium within the first 2 days of surgery or who had premorbid mobility limitation were less likely to mobilize. Identification of patients likely to have delayed mobilization will assist physical therapists with delivering appropriate management to patients with hip fracture during their acute hospital stay.

Novel C4P2 monolayers: forming Z-scheme heterojunction and Janus structure for high-efficiency metal-free photocatalytic water splitting.

Metal-free two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors have garnered significant attention in the realm of photocatalytic water splitting, primarily owing to their inherent clean, stable, and efficient photoresponsive properties. Motivated by it, we have proposed two types of stable C4P2 monolayers with indirect band gaps, mediocre carrier mobility and excellent optical absorption in visible-light and ultraviolet regions. Although the too-low work function of monolayer α-C4P2 and the too-high work function of monolayer β-C4P2 make them only suitable for single-side redox reaction in photocatalytic wat

De Novo Calculation of the Charge Carrier Mobility in Amorphous Small Molecule Organic Semiconductors.

Organic semiconductors (OSC) are key components in applications such as organic photovoltaics, organic sensors, transistors and organic light emitting diodes (OLED). OSC devices, especially OLEDs, often consist of multiple layers comprising one or more species of organic molecules. The unique properties of each molecular species and their interaction determine charge transport in OSCs-a key factor for device performance. The small charge carrier mobility of OSCs compared to inorganic semiconductors remains a major limitation of OSC device performance. Virtual design can support experimental R&

[The prevalence of falls and associated factors among the elderly according to ethnicity].

The historical and cultural characteristics reflect the Brazilian population. Elderly blacks are disadvantaged in socio-economic and demographic, clinical, functional and psychosocial aspects, reducing their social autonomy and functional independence. The decline in functional status due to variables associated with age and ethnicity can contribute to disabling events, such as falls. Socio-demographic, clinical and functional aspects related to falls were analyzed; Mobility, functional status and cognition were measured, with a statistical significance of pd"0.05. The sample of 196 elderly pe

Breaking Borders: How Barriers to Global Mobility Hinder International Partnerships in Academic Medicine.

This article describes the authors' personal experiences of collaborating across international borders in academic research. International collaboration in academic medicine is one of the most important ways by which research and innovation develop globally. However, the intersections among colonialism, academic medicine, and global health research have created a neocolonial narrative that perpetuates inequalities in global health partnerships. The authors critically examine the visa process as an example of a racist practice to show how the challenges of blocked mobility increase inequality a

Dopant-Free Squaraine-Based Polymeric Hole-Transporting Materials with Comprehensive Passivation Effects for Efficient All-Inorganic Perovskite Solar Cells.

Development of high-performance dopant-free hole-transporting materials (HTMs) with comprehensive passivation effects is highly desirable for all-inorganic perovskite solar cells (PVSCs). Squaraines (SQs) could be a candidate for dopant-free HTMs as they are natural passivators for perovskites. One major limitation of SQs is their relatively low hole mobility. Herein we demonstrate that polymerizing SQs into pseudo two dimensional (2D) p-π conjugated polymers could overcome this problem. By rationally using N,N-diarylanilinosquaraines as the comonomers, the resulting polysquaraine HTMs not onl
