Advancements in optical fiber-based wearable sensors for smart health monitoring.

Healthcare system is undergoing a significant transformation from a traditional hospital-centered to an individual-centered one, as a result of escalating chronic diseases, ageing populations, and ever-increasing healthcare costs,. Wearable sensors have become widely used in health monitoring systems since the COVID-19 pandemic. They enable continuous measurement of important health indicators like body temperature, wrist pulse, respiration rate, and non-invasive bio fluids like saliva and perspiration. Over the last few decades, the development has mostly concentrated on electrochemical and e

Detecting cardiac states with wearable photoplethysmograms and implications for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest detection.

Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is a global health problem affecting approximately 4.4 million individuals yearly. OHCA has a poor survival rate, specifically when unwitnessed (accounting for up to 75% of cases). Rapid recognition can significantly improve OHCA survival, and consumer wearables with continuous cardiopulmonary monitoring capabilities hold potential to "witness" cardiac arrest and activate emergency services. In this study, we used an arterial occlusion model to simulate cardiac arrest and investigated the ability of infrared photoplethysmogram (PPG) sensors, often utilized

Highly Stretchable, Tissue-like Ag Nanowire-Enhanced Ionogel Nanocomposites as an Ionogel-Based Wearable Sensor for Body Motion Monitoring.

The development of wearable electronic devices for human health monitoring requires materials with high mechanical performance and sensitivity. In this study, we present a novel transparent tissue-like ionogel-based wearable sensor based on silver nanowire-reinforced ionogel nanocomposites, P(AAm-co-AA) ionogel-Ag NWs composite. The composite exhibits a high stretchability of 605% strain and a moderate fracture stress of about 377 kPa. The sensor also demonstrates a sensitive response to temperature changes and electrostatic adsorption. By encapsulating the nanocomposite in a polyurethane tran

Free-living core body temperature monitoring using a wrist-worn sensor after COVID-19 booster vaccination: a pilot study.

Core body temperature (CBT) is a key vital sign and fever is an important indicator of disease. In the past decade, there has been growing interest for vital sign monitoring technology that may be embedded in wearable devices, and the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need for remote patient monitoring systems. While wrist-worn sensors allow continuous assessment of heart rate and oxygen saturation, reliable measurement of CBT at the wrist remains challenging. In this study, CBT was measured continuously in a free-living setting using a novel technology worn at the wrist and compared to re

Clinical recommendations to diagnose and monitor patients with transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy in Asia.

Transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM) is a debilitating and life-threatening condition with a heterogeneous clinical presentation. Recent guidelines from the United States and Europe have been published to guide clinical practice and to facilitate management conformity by covering current diagnostic and treatment strategies for patients with ATTR-CM. These guidelines highlight the importance of an early diagnosis to optimize therapeutic outcomes, specifying the use of tests and imaging techniques to allow accurate, noninvasive diagnosis of ATTR-CM. However, as regional practice variat

Non-Invasive Lactate Monitoring System Using Wearable Chipless Microwave Sensors With Enhanced Sensitivity and Zero Power Consumption.

Monitoring lactate levels is an established method for determining hyperlactatemia in critically ill patients and assessing aerobic fitness. It is a widely used gold-standard technique in both professional and serious amateur sports. Non-invasive real-time lactate monitoring offers significant advantages over the current technology of finger-prick blood sampling. Possible candidate technology for developing non-invasive real-time lactate monitoring should be highly sensitive, flexible, and capable of real-time monitoring of lactate levels in interstitial fluid or within specific working muscle

Preventing Postoperative Opioid-Induced Respiratory Depression Through Implementation of an Enhanced Monitoring Program.

BACKGROUND: Opioid-induced respiratory depression (OIRD) is a serious complication that can lead to negative outcomes. There are known risk factors for OIRD; however, a lack of national guidelines for the prevention and early detection of OIRD exists. METHODS: An evidence-based practice study was conducted to create an enhanced monitoring (EM) program. The EM program consisted of risk stratification of surgical spine patients, including the use of STOP-BANG screening for obstructive sleep apnea, capnography monitoring, use of home positive airway pressure therapy, capnography alarm optimizati

Preliminary Assessment of a Flexible Multi-Sensor Wearable System Based on Fiber Bragg Gratings for Respiratory Monitoring of Hemiplegic Patients.

Respiratory diseases are common in post-stroke hemiplegic patients and represent a major social problem as they worsen the quality of life and reduce the life span. As a consequence, being able to monitor respiratory parameters such as the respiratory rate (RR) and assess the presence of respiratory asynchronies could be of paramount importance to define hemiplegics' health status. Moreover, RR is a useful parameter to investigate the level of fatigue and distress that these patients undergo during rehabilitation processes. Although motion capture systems and flowmeters are the leading instrum

Investigation of the time shift between wearable photoplethysmography sensors used for continuous heart rate monitoring.

In this study, we investigated the effect of time shift in heartrate measurement by wearables, which might to be used in telehealth applications for patients suffering from heart failure. Six wearables commercially available on the market were tested in a 14-hour measurement. Each wearable was tested three times by five different test persons. A reference sensor was used to test the accuracy of the wearables. We found that different types of time shifts are common in the sensors we tested: time shifts of full days, time shifts of full hours (most probably due to incorrect or unspecified time z

Comparison of the Asleep-Awake-Asleep Technique and Monitored Anesthesia Care During Awake Craniotomy: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Awake craniotomy (AC) is the preferred surgical option for intractable epilepsy and resection of tumors adjacent to or within eloquent cortical areas. Monitored anesthesia care (MAC) or an asleep-awake-asleep (SAS) technique is most widely used during AC. We used a random-effects modeled meta-analysis to synthesize the most recent evidence to determine whether MAC or SAS is safer and more effective for AC. We included randomized controlled trials and observational studies that explored the incidence of AC failure, duration of surgery, and hospital length of stay in adult patients undergoing AC

Non-Contact Activity Monitoring Using a Multi-Axial Inertial Measurement Unit in Animal Husbandry.

In this work, a novel method is presented for non-contact non-invasive physical activity monitoring, which utilizes a multi-axial inertial measurement unit (IMU) to measure activity-induced structural vibrations in multiple axes. The method is demonstrated in monitoring the activity of a mouse in a husbandry cage, where activity is classified as resting, stationary activity and locomotion. In this setup, the IMU is mounted in the center of the underside of the cage floor where vibrations are measured as accelerations and angular rates in the X-, Y- and Z-axis. The ground truth of activity is p

Ultrastretchable Organogel/Silicone Fiber-Helical Sensors for Self-Powered Implantable Ligament Strain Monitoring.

Implantable sensors with the abilities of real-time healthcare monitoring and auxiliary training are important for exercise-induced or disease-induced muscle and ligament injuries. However, some of these implantable sensors have some shortcomings, such as requiring an external power supply or poor flexibility and stability. Herein, an organogel/silicone fiber-helical sensor based on a triboelectric nanogenerator (OFS-TENG) is developed for power-free and sutureable implantation ligament strain monitoring. The OFS-TENG with high stability and ultrastretchability is composed of an organogel fibe
