A handmade trap for malaria mosquito surveillance by citizens in Rwanda.

For effective sampling of mosquitoes in malaria surveillance programmes, it is essential to include attractive cues in traps. With the aim of implementing a citizen science project on malaria vectors in rural Rwanda, a handmade plastic bottle trap was designed and tested in the field to determine its effectiveness in capturing adult Anopheles gambiae sensu lato, the main malaria vector, and other mosquito species. Carbon dioxide (CO2) and light were used as attractive cues. CO2 was produced by inoculating sugar with yeast and water. Light was emitted from a torch by light-emitting diodes (LEDs

Pilot trial using mass field-releases of sterile males produced with the incompatible and sterile insect techniques as part of integrated Aedes aegypti control in Mexico.

BACKGROUND: The combination of Wolbachia-based incompatible insect technique (IIT) and radiation-based sterile insect technique (SIT) can be used for population suppression of Aedes aegypti. Our main objective was to evaluate whether open-field mass-releases of wAlbB-infected Ae. aegypti males, as part of an Integrated Vector Management (IVM) plan led by the Mexican Ministry of Health, could suppress natural populations of Ae. aegypti in urbanized settings in south Mexico. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We implemented a controlled before-and-after quasi-experimental study in two suburban loc

Effectiveness of environmental interventions to reduce entomological indices of dengue, Zika, and chikungunya vector.

Vector-borne diseases are a major public health problem. Amongst them, dengue, Zika and chikungunya illnesses are increasing their incidence and geographical expansion. Since vector control is the main measure to prevent these diseases, this systematic review aims to determine the effectiveness of environmental interventions for the prevention of the transmission of these three diseases, as well as for the reduction of their burden. Experimental studies of environmental management interventions aimed at vector control were included. The outcome variables of interest were disease burden indicat

Transcriptomic analysis reveals pronounced changes in gene expression due to sub-lethal pyrethroid exposure and ageing in insecticide resistance Anopheles coluzzii.

BACKGROUND: Malaria control is heavily reliant on the use of insecticides that target and kill the adult female Anopheline vector. The intensive use of insecticides of the pyrethroid class has led to widespread resistance in mosquito populations. The intensity of pyrethroid resistance in some settings in Africa means mosquitoes can contact bednets treated with this insecticide class multiple times with minimal mortality effects. Furthermore, both ageing and diel cycle have been shown to have large impacts on the resistance phenotype. Together, these traits may affect other aspects of vector bi

A systematic review assessing the potential for release of vector species from competition following insecticide-based population suppression of Anopheles species in Africa.

BACKGROUND: While insecticide-based vector control can effectively target vector species in areas of high malaria endemicity, such as Anopheles gambiae in Africa, residual disease transmission can occur. Understanding the potential role of competitive displacement between vector species could inform both current insecticide-based vector control programmes and the development of future complementary interventions. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted to identify published studies of insecticide-based vector control of Anopheles species in Africa that reported indices for absolute densiti

Effect of irradiation on the survival and susceptibility of female Anopheles arabiensis to natural isolates of Plasmodium falciparum.

BACKGROUND: The sterile insect technique (SIT) is a vector control strategy relying on the mass release of sterile males into wild vector populations. Current sex separation techniques are not fully efficient and could lead to the release of a small proportion of females. It is therefore important to evaluate the effect of irradiation on the ability of released females to transmit pathogens. This study aimed to assess the effect of irradiation on the survival and competence of Anopheles arabiensis females for Plasmodium falciparum in laboratory conditions. METHODS: Pupae were irradiated at 95

An assessment of mosquito collection techniques for xenomonitoring of anopheline-transmitted Lymphatic Filariasis in Ghana.

Monitoring vectors is relevant to ascertain transmission of lymphatic filariasis (LF). This may require the best sampling method that can capture high numbers of specific species to give indication of transmission. Gravid anophelines are good indicators for assessing transmission due to close contact with humans through blood meals. This study compared the efficiency of an Anopheles gravid trap (AGT) with other mosquito collection methods including the box and the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention gravid, light, exit and BioGent-sentinel traps, indoor resting collection (IRC) and pyre

TRUCK-MOUNTED NATULAR 2EC (SPINOSAD) ULV RESIDUAL TREATMENT IN A SIMULATED URBAN ENVIRONMENT TO CONTROL AEDES AEGYPTI AND AEDES ALBOPICTUS IN NORTH FLORIDA.

Preemptive treatment of dry habitats with an ultra-low volume (ULV) residual larvicide may be effective in an integrated vector management program to control populations of container-inhabiting Aedes mosquitoes, key vectors of Zika, dengue, and chikungunya viruses. We exposed dry, artificial containers placed in exposed and protected locations to Natular 2EC (spinosad) larvicide applied with a truck-mounted ULV sprayer in a simulated urban setting in North Florida, and later introduced water and Ae. aegypti or Ae. albopictus larvae to conduct bioassays. Up to 50% mortality was observed in bioa

Estimating Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) Flight Distance: Meta-Data Analysis.

The yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti, is a growing global concern. An ecological parameter necessary for vector control is the dispersal, or flight range, of mosquito vectors. Information on mosquito dispersal supports identifying optimal sampling and control strategies to limit the invasion of adult mosquitoes. Attempts around the world to understand the movement and flight range of Ae. aegypti have used a variety of techniques, but there has been little agreement regarding flight distances of Ae. aegypti, specifically the average linear distance Ae. aegypti travel in their natural enviro

Assessing insecticide susceptibility of Culex pipiens linnaeus (Diptera: Culicidae) in the Aras River basin: implications for disease control.

BACKGROUND: Culex pipiens, the common house mosquito, is the main vector of important medical and veterinary diseases including West Nile fever. This disease is a neglected mosquito-borne disease in Iran, where migratory and resident birds act as the main reservoirs and human and horse act as dead-end hosts of the disease. The Aras River basin is identified as a high-risk area for West Nile fever outbreaks. Chemical vector control stands out as a key method for managing mosquito-borne diseases. So, it is necessary to evaluate the susceptibility of Cx. pipiens to insecticides recommended by the

Wolbachia infections are virulent and inhibit the human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum in Anopheles gambiae.

Endosymbiotic Wolbachia bacteria are potent modulators of pathogen infection and transmission in multiple naturally and artificially infected insect species, including important vectors of human pathogens. Anopheles mosquitoes are naturally uninfected with Wolbachia, and stable artificial infections have not yet succeeded in this genus. Recent techniques have enabled establishment of somatic Wolbachia infections in Anopheles. Here, we characterize somatic infections of two diverse Wolbachia strains (wMelPop and wAlbB) in Anopheles gambiae, the major vector of human malaria. After infection, wM

Evidence that sulfisoxazole, an antibacterial sulfonamide, can adversely affect the development of Brugia pahangi in Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.

The average number of infective larvae recovered from Brugia pahangi-infected Aedes aegypti was approximately one-half that recovered from the controls after the former group of infected mosquitoes had ingested a 1.0% solution of sulfisoxazole diolamine (SXZ) in 10% sucrose-water for 4 consecutive days, beginning 4 days after infection. Most of the filarial larvae from the SXZ-treated mosquitoes were small and sluggish compared with those from the controls. There was no increased mortality of mosquitoes that ingested 1.0% SXZ in sugar-water for 4 days. Average filarial larval burdens were not

Nasal Provocation Challenges with Aedes aegypti Whole-Body Extract Induces Allergic Rhinitis.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to mosquitoes in the Tropics is perennial, and their somatic and saliva antigens have shown IgE binding capacity, although it is not clear whether this is due to cross-reactivity or primary sensitization. Inhalation of these allergens could trigger an allergic response. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to evaluate the clinical relevance of sensitization to Aedes aegypti in a group of patients with allergic rhinitis. METHODS: A cross-sectional study with allergic rhinitis subjects and healthy controls sensitized to mosquito extract was performed. Sensitization to mosqu

Evaluating the effectiveness of different intervention measures for a dengue outbreak in Hangzhou based on a dynamic model.

BACKGROUND: On the basis of 2017 dengue fever outbreak data from Shangcheng District, this study developed a dynamic transmission model to a … of cumulative cases and shorten the duration of an outbreak. The combined strategy of low-frequency mosquito control (every 3 days) and health education (60% coverage, 50% behavior adoption) and 100% case isolation performed only slightly worse than sustained low-intensity mosquito control alone. However, they were both relatively close to the actual prevention an …

Female Anopheles gambiae antennae: increased transcript accumulation of the mosquito-specific odorant-binding-protein OBP2.

BACKGROUND: New interventions are required to optimally and sustainably control the Anopheles sp. mosquitoes that transmit malaria and filariasis. The mosquito olfactory system is important in host seeking (transmission) and mate finding (reproduction). Understanding olfactory function could lead to development of control strategies based on repelling parasite-carrying mosquitoes or attracting them into a fatal trap. FINDINGS: Our initial focus is on odorant binding proteins with differential transcript accumulation between female and male mosquitoes. We report that the odorant binding protei

Mathematical assessment of the impact of human-antibodies on sporogony during the within-mosquito dynamics of Plasmodium falciparum parasites.

We develop and analyze a deterministic ordinary differential equation mathematical model for the within-mosquito dynamics of the Plasmodium falciparum malaria parasite. Our model takes into account the action and effect of blood resident human-antibodies, ingested by the mosquito during a blood meal from humans, in inhibiting gamete fertilization. The model also captures subsequent developmental processes that lead to the different forms of the parasite within the mosquito. Continuous functions are used to model the switching transition from oocyst to sporozoites as well as human antibody dens

Efficacy of Some Wearable Devices Compared with Spray-On Insect Repellents for the Yellow Fever Mosquito, Aedes aegypti (L.) (Diptera: Culicidae).

The current Zika health crisis in the Americas has created an intense interest in mosquito control methods and products. Mosquito vectors of Zika are of the genus Aedes, mainly the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti. L. The use of repellents to alter mosquito host seeking behavior is an effective method for the prevention of mosquito-borne diseases. A large number of different spray-on repellents and wearable repellent devices are commercially available. The efficacies of many repellents are unknown. This study focuses on the efficacy of eleven different repellents in reducing the number of …

Molecular Basis for Arbovirus Transmission by Aedes aegypti Mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes are considered the most important vectors for the transmission of pathogens to humans. Aedes aegypti is a unique species, not only by its highly anthropophilic and peridomestic habits but also because it can transmit an important variety of pathogenic viruses. Examples are dengue, yellow fever, chikungunya, Zika, and Mayaro viruses. After ingesting viremic blood, a wide range of mechanisms are activated in the mosquito to counteract viral infection. Nevertheless, these arboviruses possess strategies to overcome barriers in the mosquito and eventually reach the salivary glands to con
