[Development of Visually Induced Motion Sickness Evaluation Index Using Gaze Data of Elderly People].

OBJECTIVES: The benefit of using a noncontact eye-tracking system is its low a burden on individuals for measuring biological signals. The goal of this study was to develop a visually induced motion sickness (VIMS) evaluation index using data collected with a noncontact eye-tracking system for driving simulator (DS) experiments. METHODS: The participants included nine elderly people with visual and balance functions that did not interfere with their daily life. The gaze data of the participants were measured at rest-both before and after DS trials. The participants answered followed up the si…

Motion sickness diagnostic criteria: Consensus Document of the Classification Committee of the Bárány Society.

We present diagnostic criteria for motion sickness, visually induced motion sickness (VIMS), motion sickness disorder (MSD), and VIMS disorder (VIMSD) to be included in the International Classification of Vestibular Disorders. Motion sickness and VIMS are normal physiological responses that can be elicited in almost all people, but susceptibility and severity can be high enough for the response to be considered a disorder in some cases. This report provides guidelines for evaluating signs and symptoms caused by physical motion or visual motion and for diagnosing an individual as having a respo…

Bilateral Asymmetry in Ocular Counter-Rolling Reflex Is Associated With Individual Motion Sickness Susceptibility.

Accumulating evidence suggests that individual variations in vestibular functions are associated with motion sickness (MS) susceptibility. We investigated whether vestibular functions in the reflex and cortical pathways could predict the susceptibility of individuals to MS. MS-susceptible and control adults were recruited according to the Motion Sickness Susceptibility Questionnaire (MSSQ) score. Otolith reflex and cortical functions were assessed using the ocular counter rolling test and the head-tilt subjective visual vertical (HT-SVV) test, respectively. The bilateral asymmetry of each func…

No Gain No Pain: Relations Between Vestibulo-Ocular Reflexes and Motion Sickness in Mice.

Motion sickness occurs when the vestibular system is subjected to conflicting sensory information or overstimulation. Despite the lack of knowledge about the actual underlying mechanisms, several drugs, among which scopolamine, are known to prevent or alleviate the symptoms. Here, we aim at better understanding how motion sickness affects the vestibular system, as well as how scopolamine prevents motion sickness at the behavioral and cellular levels. We induced motion sickness in adult mice and tested the vestibulo-ocular responses to specific stimulations of the semi-circular canals and of th…

Determinants of Motion Sickness in Tilting Trains: Coriolis/Cross-Coupling Stimuli and Tilt Delay.

Faster trains require tilting of the cars to counterbalance the centrifugal forces during curves. Motion sensitive passengers, however, complain of discomfort and overt motion sickness. A recent study comparing different control systems in a tilting train, suggested that the delay of car tilts relative to the curve of the track contributes to motion sickness. Other aspects of the motion stimuli, like the lateral accelerations and the car jitters, differed between the tested conditions and prevented a final conclusion on the role of tilt delay. Nineteen subjects were tested on a motorized 3D tu…

Effects of Physical Driving Experience on Body Movement and Motion Sickness During Virtual Driving.

BACKGROUND: In previous research on motion sickness in simulated and virtual vehicles, subjects' experience controlling the corresponding physical vehicles has been confounded with their age. During driving of virtual automobiles in a video game, we separated chronological age from experience driving physical automobiles. METHODS: Subjects drove a virtual automobile in a driving video game. Drivers were young adults with several years of experience driving physical automobiles, while nondrivers were individuals in the same age group who did not have a driver's license and had never driven an …

Self-adjustments may account for the contradictory correlations between HRV and motion-sickness severity.

This study investigates the relationship between heart rate variability (HRV) and the level of motion sickness (MS) induced by simulated tunnel driving. The HRV indices, normalized low frequency (NLF, 0.04-0.15 Hz), normalized high frequency (NHF, 0.15-0.4 Hz), and LF/HF ratio were correlated with the subjectively and continuously rated MS levels of 20 participants. The experimental results showed that for 13 of the subjects, the MS levels positively correlated with the NLF and the LF/HF ratio and negatively correlated with the NHF. The remaining seven subjects had negative correlations betwee…

[Motion sickness in lower vertebrates: studies under conditions of weightlessness and under land conditions].

The review presents literature data and results of the author's studies with the goal to find out whether lower animals are susceptible to motion sickness. In our studies, fish and amphibians were tested for 2 h and more by using a rotating device (f = 0.24Nz, a(centrifugal) = 0.144 g) and a parallel swing (f = 0.2 Nz, a(horizontal) = 0.059 g). The performed studies did not reveal in 4 fish species and in toads any characteristic reactions of motion sickness (sopite syndrome, prodromal preparatory behavior, vomiting). At the same time, in toads characteristic stress reactions appeared (escape …

Histaminergic and cholinergic neuron systems in the impairment of human thermoregulation during motion sickness.

Motion sickness (MS) exaggerates body cooling during cold-water immersion. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether such MS-induced predisposition to hypothermia is influenced by two anti-MS drugs: the histamine-receptor blocker dimenhydrinate (DMH) and the muscarine-receptor blocker scopolamine (Scop). Nine healthy male subjects were immersed in 15 degrees C water for a maximum of 90min in five conditions: (1) control (CN): no medication, no MS provocation; (2) MS-control (MS-CN): no medication, MS provocation; (3) MS-placebo (MS-P): placebo DMH and placebo Scop, MS provocation…

A method for evaluating effects of visually-induced motion sickness using ICA for photoplethysmography.

A human watching a swaying image displayed on a wide-field display or screen sometimes suffers from visually-induced motion sickness (VIMS) that causes symptoms related to the autonomic nervous system such as nausea, vomiting, and dizziness. Previous studies indicated that the maximum cross-correlation coefficient (rho(max)) between blood pressure and heart rate, whose frequency components were limited to the neighborhood of 0.1Hz, was a useful index to evaluate the effects of VIMS on humans. The present study proposed a new method for obtaining rho(max) with measurement of neither continuous …

Microcapsule-gel formulation of promethazine HCl for controlled nasal delivery: a motion sickness medication.

The current method of choice for astronauts to treat space motion sickness is an intra-muscular injection of promethazine hydrochloride (PMZ HCl) which is invasive and causes considerable local irritation and discomfort at the site of injection. Intra-nasal delivery is considered a feasible alternative route for administration of medications to treat space motion sickness. The purpose of this research is to develop a PMZ HCl formulation that can be administered intra-nasally without irritation (i.e. leukocyte infiltration) in the nasal epithelium when dosed at PMZ HCl concentrations greater th…

Motion sickness is linked to nystagmus-related trigeminal brain stem input: a new hypothesis.

Motion sickness is a common and distressing but poorly understood syndrome associated with nausea/vomiting and autonomic nervous system accompaniments that develops in the air or space as well as on sea or land. A bidirectional aetiologic link prevails between migraine and motion-sickness. Motion sickness provokes jerk nystagmus induced by both optokinetic and vestibular stimulation. Fixation of gaze or closure of eyes generally prevents motion sickness while vestibular otolithic function is eliminated in microgravity of space, indicating a predominant pathogenetic role for visuo-sensory input…

A motion sickness maximum around the 0.2 Hz frequency range of horizontal translational oscillation.

BACKGROUND: Low frequency translational oscillation can provoke motion sickness in land vehicles, ships and aircraft. Although controlled motion experiments indicate a progressive increase in nauseogenicity as frequency decreases toward 0.2 Hz, few data are available on the existence of a definite maximum nauseogenic potential of motion around 0.2 Hz, or decreased nauseogenicity below this frequency. HYPOTHESIS: Nauseogenicity should be maximal around 0.2 Hz. METHODS: We selected 12 subjects for high motion sickness susceptibility, and they were exposed to horizontal sinusoidal motion (1.0 m…
