The clinical and pathological features of 23 cats with systemic opportunistic mycosis--aspergillosis and mucormycosis--are described. The diagnoses were made post mortem by histology. The history and characteristics of the pathological lesions of the 29 cases of feline mycosis described in the literature are compared with this series. It appears that the incidence of such mycoses is increasing.

Using petridishes at hospital in services with risk patients, we have isolated Aspergillus (41.5%), Penicillium (26.4%), Candida (12.2%), Fusarium (7.5%), Mucorales (5%), Scopulariopsis (5%), Scytalidium (0.8%), Tricothecium (0.8%), Ulocladium (0.8%). Several fungi grew at 37 degrees. These saprophytic fungi could give opportunistic mycoses in immunodeficient patients.

Adrenal involvement in cases of disseminated North American blastomycosis occurs frequently, but clinically substantive adrenal insufficiency is rare. An unusual case of disseminated blastomycosis with clinical manifestations of adrenal insufficiency was found. One should be alert to the symptoms of adrenal insufficiency that may develop in patients with disseminated mycoses.

Communal and hygienic conditions have been examined in families of 50 miners with a history of mycoses of the feet. Mycotic infection has been detected in 44 of 121 members of their families. Infection in the families is explained by neglect of preventive measures, inadequate hygienic conditions, and nonobservance of individual prophylaxis rules.

Insect bites are rarely reported to result in myocutaneous mycoses. We reviewed the literature and report 22 cases. Molds were the most common pathogens (15), especially Mucorales (9). Infections were typically misdiagnosed, and 68% had necrotizing features, often requiring amputation or extensive surgery. Both immunocompetent and immunosuppressed patients were affected.
