Nasal myiasis is an infestation by dipterous larvae within the nasal cavity, where they feed on both living tissue and fluid. This condition predominantly occurs in rural areas of tropical countries, where inadequate sanitation and a hot, humid climate create an ideal environment for larvae development. A 57-year-old, otherwise healthy male rural worker presented with a toothache in the region of the maxillary incisors. Imaging studies identified a punctiform radiopaque/hyperdense area near the nasal septum in the left nasal fossa. The larva was surgically excised and sent for histopathologica…

Myiasis is infestation of live human tissue by larva. It usually involves immunocompromised people or people living in unsanitary conditions. The cutaneous myiasis is most common type and can enter the skin with a pre-existing wound. Herein we present a case of an 18-year-old girl known case of Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa with cutaneous myiasis affecting the knee managed surgically with full recovery. Such case has not reported previously in the literature, and detailed management plan is described.

Cutaneous myiasis is an infestation of the skin with larvae of some dipteran species. Among humans, Dermatobia hominis is the most frequently encountered dipteran responsible for cutaneous myiasis. This insect is endemic to tropical and subtropical regions, consequently, individuals travelling from non-endemic areas are most susceptible to infection due to a lack of prior exposure. Three clinical variants of myiasis are distinguished: furuncular, migratory, and wound myiasis. Furuncular myiasis represents the most common form among travelers, yet it is a rare cause of pediatric skin manifestat…

Fly larvae cause myiasis. The most common of these are Cordylobia anthropophaga and Dermatobia hominis. Clinically, myiasis manifests as an erythematous papule that may become ulcerated and form furuncular lesions. In patients who have been in endemic areas, these larvae are to be suspected. Below, we present a 75-year-old male with a clinical picture of a palpable mass in the areola associated with the outflow of serohematic fluid through a central orifice. A breast intraductal lesion was suspected, so a breast ultrasound and biopsy were performed, which showed a structure compatible with myi…

Genital myiasis is an infestation of genital organs by fly larvae, where they feed and develop as parasites. They can cause severe infection, inflammatory reaction and can be linked to psychiatric disturbances. We report a rare case of genital myiasis in an elderly postmenopausal woman aged 82 years from Udaipur, Rajasthan. She presented with complaints of intense pain in the genital region and was diagnosed as a case of genital myiasis of a prolapsed uterus. Pelvic examination revealed 'Stage-IV' genitourinary prolapse according to Pelvic Organ Prolapse-Quantification (POP-Q classification), …

OBJECTIVE: Although today there is extensive scientific literature on aural myiasis, a historical study of the subject has yet to appear. This short article reports the first description of aural myiasis in the Western medical literature.
METHODS: Methods involved: (1) scholarship review of ear diseases within Ancient Greek and Roman medical texts (L'Année philologique); (2) linguistic analysis for text identification through the Library of Latin Texts, the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae and the Loeb Classical Library; and (3) translation of the Latin texts that described cases of aural myiasis wi…

Suction aspiration, which has not yet been described in the treatment for myiasis in the periorbital and facial regions, was used to achieve rapid resolution of maggot burden in a 78-year-old patient who presented with a large ulcerated squamous cell carcinoma of the face. This technique also facilitates submission of parasite samples for further analysis. Suction aspiration had no complications, such as significant residual ruptured maggots in the wound or eye injury. Suction aspiration is a safe and efficient technique to reduce maggot burden that has advantages over classic myiasis treatmen…

The family Calliphoridae is a group of heterogenous calyptrate flies with a worldwide distribution including species of ecological, veterinary, medical, and forensic importance. Notorious for their parasitic habits, the larvae of many blowflies are characterised - like some other dipteran larvae - by their ability to develop in animal flesh. When parasitism affects a living host, it is termed "myiasis". This has led the Calliphoridae to be considered as a pivotal family in its relationship with a man. Nevertheless, even after more than 50 years of research, the phylogenetic relationships among…

Myiasis is a parasitic infection of humans and animals caused by dipterous larvae and is often seen in rural areas. For the first time in the literature as a case of gingival myiasis in an 18-month-old healthy child with good oral hygiene is reported. This case presents the clinical and histopathologic features of oral myiasis. The patient had a swelling in the upper lip for three days and a perforation in the gingiva. After mechanical removal of larvae intraoral symptoms resolved within six days. The larva was identified as Wohlfahrtia magnifica according to the histopathologic evaluation. De…

Human autochthonous myiasis is uncommonly reported in Europe. This report describes a case of myiasis of a wound caused by Sarcophaga spp. Suffering from cutaneous lymphoma, the patient showed, at the level of his scalp lesions, the presence of larvae that were removed during curettage surgery; they were subsequently identified as belonging to the genus Sarcophaga. Preservation of these larvae in 10% formalin did not allow identification at the species level using molecular methods.

The aim of this article is to present a rare case of myiasis caused by Dermatobia hominis. Myiasis is a disease caused by invasion of tissues of animals and humans by larval stages of dipterous (2-winged) flies. There are few reports of oral myiasis in the literature, mostly related to Cochliomyia hominivorax larvae. We present a case of a 53-year-old man with painful swelling of the left lower lip that was confirmed to be myiasis caused by D. hominis. Though more common in tropical and subtropical regions of North and South America, myiasis should be considered in the differential diagnosis o…

Myiasis is a parasitic disease caused by developing maggots of fly species, which can infect humans. Patients with special needs, especially those with severe neuropsychomotor limitations, may have oral manifestations of this disease. Here, we present a clinical case in which a disabled person was affected by oral myiasis caused by Cochliomyia hominivorax. Maggots were found in two ulcerated lesions, a 2 cm diameter lesion in the maxilla and a 6 cm diameter lesion in the mandible. Forty-five maggots were removed during inspection, whereas 75 maggots were surgically removed under general anesth…

We report a case of cutaneous leishmaniasis panamensis in nonendemic Costa Rica. A 19-year-old female presented with nonhealing, unilateral eruption of erythematous papules with superficial central ulceration in a sporotrichoid pattern on right upper arm and back. Given the clinical picture and geographic locale, the patient was initially diagnosed with myiasis or human botfly infestation; however, the sporotrichoid pattern of the bites is an unlikely finding in myiasis. Peripheral blood smear, Giemsa stain, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were consistent for Leishmania spp. Ulceration res…

Most panuveitis in children are caused by infectious agents. A detailed clinical history and clinical examination are helpful in the diagnosis, but specific techniques are sometimes required to identify the causing specimen. We report the first published case of panuveitis in a child caused by simultaneous ocular infection by Toxocara canis and a fly larva and the innovative use of immunodiffusion technique in the vitreous for the diagnosis.
