Primary pericardial angiosarcoma: A case report.

Primary pericardial angiosarcoma is a rare malignant cardiac neoplasm with early metastasis and poor prognosis. There are currently no guidelines or effective therapeutic strategies. Here we report a case of a 22-year-old man who presented with chest pain, suffocation and transient syncope over the course of 4 months. Further workup showed a large mass in the right pericardium, histopathologic examination revealed angiosarcoma. The patient subsequently received a total of 8 cycles of chemotherapy (paclitaxel and doxorubicin). This patient has an overall survival of 1 year to date. The current

An intra-abdominal desmoid tumor.

Desmoid tumor is a very rare neoplasm which develops from fibroblasts. These tumors do not have the ability to metastasize, but they can cause significant morbidity and mortality by local invasion and they are prone to local recurrence. We present a case of an aggressive fibromatosis in a 28-year-old male patient with no previous medical history. The tumor was in the retroperitoneum and eventually caused perforation of the coecum. During the operation, no metastasis was found; however, local lymphadenopathy was seen. After the surgical resection, no adjuvant therapy (radio or chemotherapy) was

Cystic fibrohistiocytic tumour of the lung presenting with recurrent pneumothoraces: a case report.

Cystic fibrohistiocytic tumour of the lung is a very rare pathological entity that occurs either as a primary pulmonary neoplasm or as a metastasis from skin lesions called cellular fibrous histiocytomas. Herein, we present the case of a 19-year old man with a history of recurrent pneumothoraces who was managed surgically and was eventually diagnosed with cystic fibrohistiocytic tumour of the lung. Clinicians should include this disease in the differential diagnosis of pulmonary cystic lesions and be aware of its association with cellular fibrous histiocytoma. Reporting of more cases is warran

FDG-Avid Hürthle Cell Thyroid Adenoma.

Incidental thyroid uptake is found in approximately 2.5% of patients who undergo FDG PET for nonthyroid malignancy; approximately a third of the FDG PET thyroid incidentalomas are malignant, including primary thyroid malignancies and metastasis. We describe a 50-year-old woman, a potential heart transplant candidate with history of breast cancer, who was found by FDG PET/CT to harbor a large thyroid mass with intense FDG uptake. Biopsy and molecular study demonstrated that the thyroid mass was a Hürthle cell adenoma. This case highlights that Hürthle cell neoplasm should be included in the dif

Radiological findings in pelvic solitary fibrous tumour.

Solitary fibrous tumour (SFT) is an uncommon, usually benign mesenchymal neoplasm. SFT was first described in the pleura, but has subsequently been reported to occur in numerous anatomic locations including the abdomen and pelvis. Abdominopelvic SFTs are typically an indolent process, in spite of reaching a large size by the time of diagnosis. The preferred treatment is complete resection followed by extended follow-up surveillance. The risk of local recurrence and metastasis correlates with tumour size and the histological status of surgical margins. We present the imaging findings of a large

Rare presentation of a localised malignant pleural mesothelioma with cranial metastasis.

Mesothelioma is an uncommon malignant neoplasm and a localised form of the pleura is especially very rare. Diagnosis of localised malignant pleural mesothelioma (LMPM) is very challenging. Histopathological verification is the gold standard, and studies such as CT, positron emission tomography (PET) and thoracoscopy are very valuable tools in assisting diagnosis. We report a case of histopathologically proven LMPM, which was discovered as a well circumscribed solitary subpleural nodule on PET-CT after presentation with cranial metastasis. This case shows that LMPM can present with uncommon rad

MRI, enhanced CT, and FDG PET/CT in primary retroperitoneal mucinous cystadenocarcinoma.

Primary retroperitoneal mucinous cystadenocarcinoma (PRMC) is an extremely rare neoplasm. We present a case of PRMC with MRI, enhanced CT, and FDG PET/CT findings. Abdominal MRI showed a cystic lesion in the retroperitoneum with a mural nodule. The mural nodule showed progressive enhancement on enhanced CT and intense FDG uptake on early PET/CT with increased SUVmax on delayed PET/CT. Laparoscopy was performed. Retroperitoneal mucinous cystadenocarcinoma was confirmed histopathologically. Metastasis from gastrointestinal tract or ovary was excluded. This case indicates, although rare, PRMC sho

Adhesive capsulitis mimicking metastasis on 18F-FDG-PET/CT.

A 70-year-old woman with squamous cell carcinoma of the lung and chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma underwent PET/CT for initial staging. There was avid focal asymmetrical uptake at the left shoulder, concerning for metastasis. Magnetic resonance imaging performed for further evaluation showed an enhancing soft tissue process at the rotator interval. Clinical notes indicated a 6-month history of progressive left shoulder pain and limited range of motion. The magnetic resonance imaging appearance and patient's symptoms were characteristic of adhesive capsulitis. We describe

First manic episode in a patient with breast cancer.

Mental disorders occur in as much as 50% of patients with cancer, impairing the oncologic prognosis and quality of life. The diagnostic investigation and treatment planning of this comorbidity impose a clinical challenge once complications related to the neoplasm, such as brain metastasis and paraneoplastic syndromes, must be excluded. In addition, psychotropic medications may interfere with oncologic treatment. We report the case of a 39-year-old female patient who presented with a first episode of psychotic mania after having been recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Also, we present a lit

Extrapulmonary small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the paranasal sinuses: a case report and review of the literature.

Primary small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the paranasal sinuses is an extremely rare and distinctive tumor with aggressive clinical behavior. We report on a patient who had a small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the ethmoid sinus with invasion of the upper aspect of the right maxillary sinus and medial aspect of the right orbit. After 2 cycles of chemotherapy that were unsuccessful, he underwent radiotherapy with complete tumor remission. Local recurrence was not identified after 11 months of follow-up; however, distant metastasis developed 2 months after radiotherapy. The natural histo

Metastatic adenocarcinoma of the colon: early manifestation in gingival tissue.

A case of gingival metastasis of adenocarcinoma of the colon is reported, the lesion being an early clinical indication of a primary malignant tumor. The diagnosis of metastatic lesion in the oral region is always challenging, both to clinician and to the pathologist, due to its rarity and complexity. In the present case, the clinical hypothesis was peripheral ossifying fibroma or pyogenic granuloma. Histologically, the biopsy tissue revealed a malignant neoplasm not connected to the mucosal surface. Immunohistochemically, the lesion was positive for 35ßH11 and cytokeratin 20 and focally posit

Oncocytic carcinoma arising in the submandibular gland with disseminated bone metastases.

Oncocytic carcinoma of the head and neck is a very rare neoplasm. It usually occurs in the parotid glands. Only 11 cases of oncocytic carcinoma of the submandibular gland have been reported, and no cases have shown distant bone metastasis. A 67-year-old man presented with a tingling sensation in both hands due to a herniated cervical disc. A whole body bone scan and PET-CT showed disseminated bone metastases. Neck CT revealed a 1.7 cm calcified left submandibular mass. The submandibular gland and bone marrow biopsies were consistent with oncocytic carcinoma. Our case is the first report of onc

In-transit metastasis of the breast region from malignant melanoma of the trunk.

Extramammarian cancer metastases to the breast are rare. Melanoma is one of the malignancies that can metastasise to the breast. The distinction between a primary breast carcinoma and a metastatic neoplasm is crucial because surgical and therapeutic treatment options will vary accordingly. The present report concerns a case of breast metastasis from melanoma of the trunk. A 50-year-old man with a self-detected left breast lump who had previously undergone wide local excision and axillary dissection for melanoma was admitted to our department. Ultrasonography showed an 0.8 cm hypoechoic nodule

Mucinous metastases from occult breast carcinoma.

The case of a 34-year-old female patient come to the Emergency Department for neurological symptoms of recent onset is presented. No-contrast CT documented the presence of a neoformation approximately 3 cm in size in the 4th ventricle. For an in-depth diagnostic study of the lesion contrast enhanced MRI was performed. The examination detected a second minute (< 1cm) intraparenchymal nodule highly suspicious of metastasis from primary extra-cerebral neoplasm. The differential diagnosis of infratentorial lesions is discussed. It is concluded that the diagnostic combination of standard MRI with c

Metastasis в качестве первоначального представления Carcinoid Tumor: Case Report and Literical Review.

Case Report: An Unusual Case of Pulmonary Metastatic Adenocarcinoma From Low-Grade Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasms.

BACKGROUND: Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMNs) are indolent tumors with low-grade cytology. Although peritoneal dissemination is common due to tumor rupture and mucinous deposits on the visceral peritoneal surface, distant involvement, such as lung, is rarely seen due to lack of invasiveness. CASE PRESENTATION: A 70-year-old woman presented to the hospital due to continuously elevated carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) levels for 10 months without any symptoms. PET/CT revealed two lesions located in the left lung and appendix. The postoperative pathology results revealed pulmonary m

Neoplastic nerve lesions.

Though metastasis and malignant infiltration of the peripheral nervous system is relatively rare, physicians should have a familiarity with their presentations to allow for prompt diagnosis and initiation of treatment. This article will review the clinical presentations, diagnostic evaluation, and treatment of neoplastic involvement of the cranial nerves, nerve roots, peripheral nerves, and muscle. Due to the proximity of the neural structure traversing the skull base, metastasis to this region results in distinctive syndromes, most often associated with breast, lung, and prostate cancer. Meta

All bone metastases are not created equal: Revisiting treatment resistance in renal cell carcinoma.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common malignancy of the kidney, representing 80-90% of renal neoplasms, and is associated with a five-year overall survival rate of approximately 74%. The second most common site of metastasis is bone. As patients are living longer due to new RCC targeting agents and immunotherapy, RCC bone metastases (RCCBM) treatment failure is more prevalent. Bone metastasis formation in RCC is indicative of a more aggressive disease and worse prognosis. Osteolysis is a prominent feature and causes SRE, including pathologic fractures. Bone metastasis from other tumors

Adrenal metastasis from endometrial cancer: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Metastases to adrenal glands originate principally from lung, breast, or gastrointestinal cancers, followed by malignant melanoma and thyroid neoplasms. We present an unusual case of uterine cancer metastasizing to the adrenal glands with a review of the English literature on the management of this rare disease. CASE SUMMARY: A 53-year-old Caucasian woman with a history of endometrial cancer (grade 2; International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics III A) was hospitalized in November 2017 for a left adrenal mass found on a follow-up computed tomography scan 3 years after her

Basaloid Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Sigmoid Colon.

Basaloid squamous cell carcinoma (BSCC) of the colon is rarely found proximal to the anal canal. We report a case of an 81-year-old woman who was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the lung without metastasis and BSCC of the sigmoid with differing histologic findings suggesting that these tumors were separate primary neoplasms. SCC of the colon has a dismal prognosis. Surgery is the primary method of treatment when feasible, in addition to chemotherapeutic agents.
