BACKGROUND: Ewing's sarcoma is a rare and aggressive malignancy of bone and soft tissue, most commonly affecting the pelvis and long bones of children and adolescents. Spinal involvement, particularly in young adults, is exceptionally uncommon and can present symptoms mimicking more prevalent lumbar pathologies such as disc herniation, increasing the risk of misdiagnosis and delayed treatment.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 23-year-old male presented with progressive low back pain and bilateral L5 radiculopathy with ankle and great toe dorsiflexion weakness (MRC 4/5). Bowel and bladder function were pre

INTRODUCTION: Ewing sarcoma (ES), the neuroectodermal derived tumour typically occurs in the bone and soft tissue of children and young adults. Primary ES of the kidney is strikingly rare and only a few cases and small case series have been documented. Due to the highly aggressive nature of this neoplasm, distinction from other morphological mimickers is truly indispensable in terms of treatment and prognosis. Here we describe the clinicopathological features of four cases of primary ES of the kidney with special emphasis on one case having extensive neural differentiation postneo- adjuvant ch

Mortality has been studied in 15,577 ankylosing spondylitis (AS) patients diagnosed between 1935 and 1957 in the UK, of whom 14,556 received X-ray treatment. By January 1, 1992 over half of the cohort had died. Among the irradiated patients, cancer mortality was significantly greater than expected from the national rates for England and Wales, with a ratio of observed deaths to expected (relative risk, RR) of 1.30, and significant increases individually for leukaemia, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, multiple myeloma and cancers of the oesophagus, colon, pancreas, lung, bones, connective and soft tissu

BACKGROUND: Primary soft tissue giant cell tumor (GCT-ST) is rare and has relatively low malignant potential. Most reports are pathological and clinical studies, while imaging studies have only been reported in cases of adjacent bone or with atypical cystic degeneration. With regard to the findings on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or ultrasonography, superficial masses can be further identified based on facial edema, skin thickening, skin contact, internal hemorrhage or necrosis and lobulation of the mass. Unlike deep-seated masses, MRI features do not always provide an accurate diagnosis f

Fibrous dysplasia is a rare benign bone disorder characterized by the replacement of normal bone with fibroblastic and osteoblastic tissue. We present a case of monostotic fibrous dysplasia in a 25-year-old male patient. The case highlights the clinical presentation, radiographic features, and management approach for this condition. This report aims to contribute to the understanding of fibrous dysplasia and its management options. A 25-year-old male presented with a chief complaint of persistent left hip pain. The pain was described as a dull ache, associated with difficulty in weight-bearing

BACKGROUND: Stool DNA testing in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) may detect colorectal cancer and advanced precancers with high sensitivity; less is known about the presence of DNA markers in small IBD lesions, their association with metachronous neoplasia, or contribution to stool test positivity.
METHODS: At a single center in 2 blinded phases, we assayed methylated bone morphogenic protein 3, methylated N-Myc downstream-regulated gene 4, and mutant KRAS in DNA extracted from paraffin-embedded benign lesions, and matched control tissues of patients with IBD, who were followed

Erdheim-Chester disease is a rare, non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis histologically characterized by multi-systemic proliferation of mature histiocytes in a background of inflammatory stroma. The disease can involve virtually any organ system; most commonly the bones, skin, retroperitoneum, heart, orbit, lung, and brain are affected. Although a histiocytic proliferation is the histological hallmark of the disease, a wide range of morphological appearances have been described as part of case studies or small series. A comprehensive review of histopathological features in clinically and molecula

Extraskeletal para-articular osteochondromas of the infrapatellar fat pad are unique soft-tissue tumors whose etiology and clinical history remain poorly understood. We report three cases and a systematic review of the literature. Three females, aged 47, 54, and 70 years, presented with pain and a parapatellar knee mass. All three underwent marginal excision with no complications and no recurrence. In the literature, 32 reports describing 42 cases were identified. Mean age at presentation was 51.1 years (range: 12-75). There were 25 females and 20 males. Seven patients (15.6%) had a history of

A particulate cancellous bone and marrow (PCBM) graft combined with titanium (Ti-) mesh tray has become one of the most popular mandibular reconstruction methods. The technique has been applied to the mandibular discontinuity defects after segmental mandibulectomy. To the best of our knowledge, there are no reports on using the technique after hemimandibulectomy, during which a wide mandibular resection, including the condyle, is performed. Here, we first report a case of mandibular reconstruction after hemimandibulectomy, using a plate and soft-tissue free flap, followed by a Ti-mesh and PCBM

Current in vivo models for investigating human primary bone tumors and cancer metastasis to the bone rely on the injection of human cancer cells into the mouse skeleton. This approach does not mimic species-specific mechanisms occurring in human diseases and may preclude successful clinical translation. We have developed a protocol to engineer humanized bone within immunodeficient hosts, which can be adapted to study the interactions between human cancer cells and a humanized bone microenvironment in vivo. A researcher trained in the principles of tissue engineering will be able to execute the

Crystal-storing histiocytosis (CSH) is a rare entity usually presenting microscopically as sheets of histiocytes with intralysosomal accumulation of refractile, crystalline substances. CSH is most often the result of monoclonal immunoglobulin light chain deposition in the setting of a plasma cell neoplasm or lymphoma with plasma cell differentiation. However, this condition may arise in association with autoimmune, inflammatory, infectious, and drug-related etiologies and can harbor polyclonal immunoglobulins or other crystalline materials. It usually presents in a localized fashion, with the

Mastocytosis are a group of hematologic neoplasms characterized by an accumulation of atypical mast cells in one or several organs/tissues, often accompanied by mast cell activation. Whereas in children the disease manifestations are mostly limited to the skin, in adults the disease is usually systemic (systemic mastocytosis; SM) and involves the bone marrow and/or other internal organs. Several variants of SM have been defined. Whereas most patients have indolent SM, some patients have advanced SM, which underlines the complexity of SM. In 2002, a European consortium of clinicians and scienti

A 19-year-old female student presented with painless, progressive proptosis in the right eye for the past six months causing significant cosmetic blemish and double vision. Clinical evaluation revealed normal visual acuity, normal pupillary reflex, severe proptosis, and dystopia. Orbital imaging revealed a heterogeneous mass in superior orbit displacing the globe inferiorly and causing extensive bony erosion of frontal bone superiorly and invading the frontal sinus. Excision biopsy was performed with en-bloc removal of the tumor. Surgical delivery of a slimy mass with infiltrated bony tissue l

Leiomyosarcomas (LMSs) are rare malignant mesenchymal tumors which show smooth-muscle differentiation. Most LMSs involving the oral tissues primarily affect the maxillary sinus, the maxillary or mandibular bone. We present a case of LMS of the mandibular alveolar mucosa, arising in a 12-year-old male child from Ethiopia. A malignant spindle cell-like neoplasm was diagnosed on clinical and radiographic findings as well as on incisional biopsy. The tumor was resected with wide margins. The following histopathologic examination with additional immunohistochemical studies secured the diagnosis LMS

Ameloblastoma is a slow-growing, persistent and locally aggressive neoplasm of epithelial origin accounting for 10% out of 30% of all odontogenic tumors. According to the World Health Organization, ameloblastomas are classified into the following types: conventional, unicystic, and peripheral. Unicystic ameloblastoma (UA) refers to those cystic lesions that show clinical, radiographic, or gross features of a mandibular cyst, but on histologic examination show a typical ameloblastomatous epithelium lining part of the cyst cavity, with or without luminal and/or mural tumor growth. We report a ca

A number of abnormalities of the shoulder joint can cause pain or dysfunction. Imaging of this complex joint is demanding. Standard radiographs are considered to represent the basis of all imaging. For more detailed diagnoses, especially concerning soft tissue, more advanced imaging methods are required. Standard arthrography (without combination with either CT or MRI) is rarely indicated anymore. Bone scintigraphy is another imaging method with limited use in shoulder joint abnormalities (neoplasm, infection, occult fracture). Sonography is useful in abnormalities of the rotator cuff and the

Osteosarcoma (OSA) is a malignant neoplasm of mesenchymal origin characterized by osteoid or immature bone production and is rarely reported in reptiles. A 3-month-old Argentine black and white tegu presented with a subcutaneous mass on the left flank, approximately 2 months after a dog bite. Physical and radiographic examination revealed no initial internal abnormalities, but follow-up examination revealed a rapidly enlarging soft tissue mass. Ultrasonography confirmed a well-encapsulated mass, while contrast-enhanced computed tomography demonstrated mineralization, rib osteolysis, and multip

Fanconi anemia (FA) is the most common hereditary bone marrow failure syndrome, with an incidence of 1 in 5,000,000. This disease is caused by an alteration in one of the 23 genes associated with the FA/BRCA DNA repair pathway, which is responsible for repairing interstrand bridges generated during homologous recombination. FA has been associated with a predisposition to other types of neoplasm. The current study aimed to present a pathogenic variant in FANCA observed in three Mexican siblings, as detected by next-generation sequencing (NGS). The results of an induced chromosomal breakage test

Extramedullary plasmacytoma is a rare localized plasma cell neoplasm typically found in soft tissues outside the bone marrow. Predominantly occurring in the head and neck region, particularly in the sinonasal and nasopharyngeal areas, it presents a diagnostic challenge due to its uncommon nature. Herein, we report a 38-year-old female patient with Down's syndrome with a 2-year complaint of intermittent dysphonia, hoarseness, and progressive respiratory distress, including dyspnea, fatigue, and biphasic stridor. Examination via flexible laryngoscopy revealed a white lesion, prompting direct mic
