OBJECTIVE: To describe the novel technique of percutaneous nephroscope-assisted renal hydatid cyst evacuation and lithotripter-assisted division of the cyst wall for combined laparoscopic and percutaneous management.
METHODS: A calcified hydatid cyst of the kidney is a rare entity and needs special techniques for total laparoscopic management. A 45-year-old woman was treated successfully for a calcified renal hydatid cyst using the transperitoneal laparoscopic technique. A chlorhexidine gluconate and cetrimide mixture was used as the scolicidal solution to sterilize the cyst. The endocyst and

We report on our first 6 months' experience with the extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripter (ESWL). During this period, 410 treatments were given to 350 kidneys and ureters. Our series was characterized by a particularly high proportion (40%) of multiple and large calculi and included 25 complete staghorns. The latter required multiple treatments (up to five), but no adjunct percutaneous nephrolithotomies were used in this series. A percutaneous nephrostomy was inserted in 20 cases. Thirty-six ureteric calculi above the pelvic level were treated in situ, with 95% success. The presence of a ure

INTRODUCTION: Fusion, pelvic, and duplicated urinary tract anomalies of the kidney are rarely seen. There might be some difficulties in the stone treatment, in the administration of extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL), retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS), percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), and laparoscopic pyelolithotomy procedures in these patients due to the anatomical variations in kidneys with anomalies.
AIM: To evaluate RIRS results on patients with upper urinary tract anomalies.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data of 35 patients with horseshoe kidney, pelvic ectopic kidney, and doub

INTRODUCTION: Pediatric urolithiasis is a very specific and challenging problem in the field of modern urology. Currently, there are three major methods for kidney stone removal: the extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL), the retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS), and the percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), the latter one proving to be an efficient and safe monotherapy of stones even with larger burden. Different sizes of nephroscopes are used (standard, mini, micro), where smaller size is logically correlated with safer profile, especially in pediatric population.
AIM: To analyze the

Urolithiasis is a significant worldwide source of morbidity, constituting a common urological disease that affects between 10 and 15% of the world population. Recent technological and surgical advances have replaced the need for open surgery with less invasive procedures. The factors which determine the indications for percutaneous nephrolithotomy include stone factors (stone size, stone composition, and stone location), patient factors (habitus and renal anomalies), and failure of other treatment modalities (ESWL and flexible ureteroscopy). The accepted indications for PCNL are stones larger

PURPOSE: Percutaneous stone surgery can be challenging in spina bifida (SB) patients due to their body habitus and spinal cord anomalies. A safe surgical approach may necessitate acceptance of lower stone-free (SF) rates. We seek to determine if anatomic complexity, as measured by spinal cord curvature and torso length, is associated with SF rates after percutaneous stone surgery in SB patients. We hypothesize that increasing anatomic complexity is associated with lower SF rates following percutaneous stone surgery.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all cases of percutaneous nephrolithotom

Seventeen patients with urolithiasis in problem kidneys which comprised horseshoe kidneys, medullary sponge kidneys (MSKs), polycystic kidneys and duplex kidneys presented to our hospital and were evaluated for treatment with extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy (ESWL). A total of 21 renal units were treated with ESWL. Auxiliary procedures included preoperative retrograde ureteral catheterization (1 horseshoe kidney) placement of a retrograde double-J catheter stent (1 MSK), percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL; 2 MSKs) and postoperative PCNL (1 MSK). The outcome showed that 5 renal units (23.8

Since its introduction into the endourologist's armamentarium almost 40 years ago, percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) has become the standard of care for patients with large-volume nephrolithiasis. Postoperative infection is one of the most common complications of the procedure, and postoperative sepsis is one of the most detrimental. A number of factors have been found to increase the risk of postoperative sepsis. These include patient characteristics that are known preoperatively, such as urine culture obtained from the bladder or from the renal pelvis if percutaneous access to the renal pe

Staghorn stones have always been a challenge for urologists, especially in some special situations, such as horseshoe kidney, ectopic kidney, paediatric kidney, and solitary kidney. The treatment of these staghorn stones must be aggressive because they can lead to renal function loss and serious complications. The gold-standard management for staghorn stones is surgical treatment with the aim of clearing the stones and preserving renal function. Treatment methods for staghorn stones have developed rapidly, such as extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy, retrograde intrarenal surgery, percutaneo

Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is a surgical procedure which is used to extract renal pelvic stones. An optimum access tract, without traumatizing the surrounding structures, is essential for the surgery. Trauma to the surrounding structures and extra-vasation of the irrigating fluid may result in complications like hydrothorax, pneumothorax, hydro pneumothorax etc. These complications may produce intra- operative respiratory compromise leading on to arterial hypoxemia and its sequelae. A series of three case reports with review is presented here. First case is accumulation of irrigating

Complete staghorn calculi are typically managed with percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). However, dilating nephrostomy and inserting a nephro access sheath can be difficult to perform without hydronephrosis. We reported the procedure of ureteroscopy-assisted retrograde nephrostomy (UARN) during PCNL. UARN is effective without dilating the renal collecting system in cases of complete staghorn calculi. A 63-year old female with a left complete staghorn renal calculus was referred to our hospital. Under general and epidural anesthesia, the patient was placed in a modified-Valdivia position. A fl

A 66-year-old woman had a 22 mm right kidney stone accompanied with a horseshoe kidney. The size of this stone had been increasing gradually from 7 mm to 22 mm during the past 5 years. Although apparent pelviuretic junction stenosis could not be identified by intravenous urography, external pelvis was dilated in both kidneys. Complete excretion of fragmented stones by extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy seemed to be difficult because impaired urinary passage from the renal pelvis to the ureter was suspected. Percutaneous nephrolithotomy was also difficult due to malrotation of the pelvic-cali

We report two cases in which the renal stone originated from a foreign body which was used to treat a urinary tract fistula by a gynecologist. The first patient developed a vesicovaginal fistula following an emergency Caesarean operation. At the time of correcting surgery, a 5 Fr ureteral catheter was used as a splint catheter elsewhere, 108 mm of which somehow migrated up to the renal pelvis and a stone was formed 4.5 years later. The second patient underwent a radical hysterectomy for uterine cervical cancer. Postoperatively, a ureterovaginal fistula developed, for which a double-J ureteral

Myiasis is caused by the presence of dipterous larvae in humans and animals. It is usually associated with poor hygienic conditions. A urologist rarely comes across myiasis. We report a case of myiasis around a recently placed nephrostomy tube. A 55-year-old male farmer from a rural area underwent right percutaneous nephrolithotomy. The procedure was terminated because of bradycardia and arrhythmia. There were residual calculi. A nephrostomy was kept. His relook nephroscopy was planned, but he was not willing. Hence, he was discharged with an indwelling nephrostomy tube. Two weeks later, he pr

With the introduction of the Dornier HM3 lithotripter, the successful history of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) for noninvasive treatment of urinary stones began about 25 years ago. The development of newer lithotripters has not been able to improve clinical efficacy because the shock wave parameters specifically responsible for stone disintegration or tissue trauma and pain induction have not yet been identified. Actual research in lithotripter technology deals with modification of the focal point. The evolution of endoscopic procedures, ureterorenoscopy, and percutaneous nephro
