Neural stem cell changes and spatial distribution of AQP4 expression in a fetal goat model of obstructive hydrocephalus.

BACKGROUND: Fetal ventriculomegaly (VM) is a common congenital abnormality with poor outcomes in severe cases, the mechanisms of which include cerebrospinal fluid(CSF)circulation disorders and abnormal neural development. While Aquaporin 4 (AQP4) plays an important role in CSF circulation, its expression in fetal VM has not been fully studied. METHODS: Fetal goats at 90-100 days of gestation were divided into experimental (hydrocephalus induced by BioGlue ® injection) and control (untreated cotwin) groups. Ventricular changes were monitored using ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI

Early identification of patients at risk for iron-deficiency anemia using deep learning techniques.

OBJECTIVES: Iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) is a common health problem worldwide, and up to 10% of adult patients with incidental IDA may have gastrointestinal cancer. A diagnosis of IDA can be established through a combination of laboratory tests, but it is often underrecognized until a patient becomes symptomatic. Based on advances in machine learning, we hypothesized that we could reduce the time to diagnosis by developing an IDA prediction model. Our goal was to develop 3 neural networks by using retrospective longitudinal outpatient laboratory data to predict the risk of IDA 3 to 6 months be

Muscle synergies analysis shows altered neural strategies in women with patellofemoral pain during walking.

Several studies suggest that the central nervous system coordinates muscle activation by modulating neural commands directed to groups of muscles combined to form muscle synergies. Individuals with patellofemoral pain (PFP) move differently from asymptomatic individuals. Understanding the neural strategies involved in the execution of tasks such as walking can help comprehend how the movement is planned and better understand this clinical condition. The objective of this study was to compare muscle synergies between women with and without PFP during walking. Eleven women with PFP and thirteen

Emotional brain network decoded by biological spiking neural network.

INTRODUCTION: Emotional disorders are essential manifestations of many neurological and psychiatric diseases. Nowadays, researchers try to explore bi-directional brain-computer interface techniques to help the patients. However, the related functional brain areas and biological markers are still unclear, and the dynamic connection mechanism is also unknown. METHODS: To find effective regions related to different emotion recognition and intervention, our research focuses on finding emotional EEG brain networks using spiking neural network algorithm with binary coding. We collected EEG data whi

Neural prosthesis control restores near-normative neuromechanics in standing postural control.

Current lower-limb prostheses do not provide active assistance in postural control tasks to maintain the user's balance, particularly in situations of perturbation. In this study, we aimed to address this missing function by enabling neural control of robotic lower-limb prostheses. Specifically, electromyographic (EMG) signals (amplified neural control signals) recorded from antagonistic residual ankle muscles were used to drive a robotic prosthetic ankle directly and continuously. Participants with transtibial amputation were recruited and trained in using the EMG-driven robotic ankle. We stu

Evidence of Disruption in Neural Regeneration in Dry Eye Secondary to Rheumatoid Arthritis.

The purpose of our study was to analyze abnormal neural regeneration activity in the cornea through means of confocal microscopy in rheumatoid arthritis patients with concomitant dry eye disease. We examined 40 rheumatoid arthritis patients with variable severity and 44 volunteer age- and gender-matched healthy control subjects. We found that all examined parameters were significantly lower (p < 0.05) in rheumatoid arthritis patients as opposed to the control samples: namely, the number of fibers, the total length of the nerves, the number of branch points on the main fibers and the total nerv

Elevated reward, emotion, and memory region response to thin models predicts eating disorder symptom persistence: A prospective functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

Because few studies have identified biological factors that predict the persistence of eating pathology, we tested the hypotheses that elevated responsivity of brain regions implicated in reward valuation to thin models and high-calorie binge foods would predict the persistence of eating pathology. We analyzed data from 146 women (Mage = 21.87 ± 3.81) with threshold or subthreshold anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, or purging disorder who completed functional magnetic resonance imaging scans assessing neural response to thin models and binge foods at baseline, were rand

Emotional food-cue-reactivity in anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa: An electroencephalography study.

OBJECTIVE: Food-cue-reactivity entails neural and experiential responses to the sight and smell of attractive foods. Negative emotions can modulate such cue-reactivity and this might be central to the balance between restrictive versus bulimic symptomatology in Anorexia Nervosa (AN) and Bulimia Nervosa (BN). METHOD: Pleasantness ratings and electrocortical responses to food images were measured in patients with AN (n = 35), BN (n = 32) and matched healthy controls (HC, n = 35) in a neutral state and after idiosyncratic negative emotion induction while electroencephalography (EEG) was recorded

Clinicopathological Impacts of Expression of Neuronal Markers in Lymphangioleiomyomatosis.

Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is a tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC)-associated tumor, characterized by the expression of neural crest lineages including neuronal markers. Neural crest cells can differentiate into multiple cell types that contribute to tissues associated with TSC-related tumors, and TSC-related tumors could be specifically associated with distinct neural crest subtypes. This study aimed to clarify the clinicopathological effects of expression of neuronal markers in LAM. Lung tissues from 40 patients with LAM (of whom 13, 1, and 26 had undergone lung transplantation, lobectomy,

Myelomeningocele as an anomaly of secondary neurulation.

PURPOSE: Myelomeningocele (MMC) is the representative entity of open neural tube defects resulting from an error during primary neurulation. However, cases of MMC in the region of the secondary neural tube (below the junction of S1 and S2 vertebrae) are sometimes encountered. We aimed to analyze the clinical features of atypical "low-lying" MMC in comparison to the typical MMC and suggest possible pathoembryogenesis. METHODS: From 1986 to 2020, 95 MMC patients were treated in our institute. A retrospective review of the radiological and clinical information was performed. We defined "low-lyin

Developmental sex differences in the peri-pubertal pattern of hypothalamic reproductive gene expression, including Kiss1 and Tac2, may contribute to sex differences in puberty onset.

The mechanisms regulating puberty still remain elusive, as do the underlying causes for sex differences in puberty onset (girls before boys) and pubertal disorders. Neuroendocrine puberty onset is signified by increased pulsatile GnRH secretion, yet how and when various upstream reproductive neural circuits change developmentally to govern this process is poorly understood. We previously reported day-by-day peri-pubertal increases (Kiss1, Tac2) or decreases (Rfrp) in hypothalamic gene expression of female mice, with several brain mRNA changes preceding external pubertal markers. However, simil

The neural foundation of associative memory: a dynamic functional connectivity study for right-handed young adults.

The medial temporal lobe (MTL) is the core neural construction related to associative memory. This study sought to explore the dynamic functional connectivity (dFC) between the subdivisions of MTL and other regions in the whole brain. Additionally, it sought to determine relationships between connectivity stability and associative memory function, to elucidate the neural foundation of associative memory from the perspectives of dFC. A Wechsler Memory Scale China revised edition (WMS-RC) measurement and a resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging were conducted to clarify adults' func

Altered brain activity in the bilateral frontal cortices and neural correlation with cognitive impairment in schizophrenia.

Cognitive impairments are core aspects of schizophrenia and are highly related to poor outcomes. However, the effect of therapy on cognitive impairments remains unsatisfactory as its biological mechanisms are not fully understood. The purpose of this study was to investigate the disrupted intrinsic neural activity of the frontal areas and to further examine the functional connectivity of frontal areas related to cognitive impairments in schizophrenia. We collected brain imaging data using a 3T Siemens Prisma MRI system in 32 patients with schizophrenia and 34 age- and sex-matched healthy contr

Neural entrainment to speech and nonspeech in dyslexia: Conceptual replication and extension of previous investigations.

Whether phonological deficits in developmental dyslexia are associated with impaired neural sampling of auditory information is still under debate. Previous findings suggested that dyslexic participants showed atypical neural entrainment to slow and/or fast temporal modulations in speech, which might affect prosodic/syllabic and phonemic processing respectively. However, the large methodological variations across these studies do not allow us to draw clear conclusions on the nature of the entrainment deficit in dyslexia. Using magnetoencephalography, we measured neural entrainment to nonspeech

Visual experiences during letter production contribute to the development of the neural systems supporting letter perception.

Letter production through handwriting creates visual experiences that may be important for the development of visual letter perception. We sought to better understand the neural responses to different visual percepts created during handwriting at different levels of experience. Three groups of participants, younger children, older children, and adults, ranging in age from 4.5 to 22 years old, were presented with dynamic and static presentations of their own handwritten letters, static presentations of an age-matched control's handwritten letters, and typeface letters during fMRI. First, data f

Spatiotemporal characteristics of neural activity in tibial nerves with carbon nanotube yarn electrodes.

BACKGROUND: Reliable interfacing with peripheral nervous system is essential to extract neural signals. Current implantable peripheral nerve electrodes cannot provide long-term reliable interfaces due to their mechanical mismatch with host nerves. Carbon nanotube (CNT) yarns possess excellent mechanical flexibility and electrical conductivity. It is of great necessity to investigate the selectivity of implantable CNT yarn electrodes. NEW METHOD: Neural interfaces were fabricated with CNT yarn electrodes insulated with Parylene-C. Acute recordings were carried out on tibial nerves of rats, and

A wearable neural interface for detecting and decoding attempted hand movements in a person with tetraplegia.

We are developing a wearable neural interface based on high-density surface electromyography (HDEMG) for detecting and decoding signals from spared motor units in the forearms of people with tetraplegia after spinal cord injury (SCI). A lightweight, form-fitting garment containing 150 disc electrodes and covering the entire forearm was used to map the myoelectric activity of forearm muscles during a wide range of voluntary tasks of a person with chronic tetraplegia after SCI (C5 motor and C6 sensory American Spinal Injury Association Impairment Scale B spinal cord injury). Despite exhibiting n

Effects of Chronic Ephedrine Toxicity on Functional Connections, Cell Apoptosis, and CREB-Related Proteins in the Prefrontal Cortex of Rhesus Monkeys.

Ephedrine abuse has spread in many parts of the world, severely threatening human health. The mechanism of ephedrine toxicity is still unclear. To explore the possible neural mechanisms of ephedrine toxicity, this study established a non-human primate model of ephedrine exposure, analyzed the functional connectivity changes in its prefrontal cortex through resting state BOLD-fMRI, and then inspected the pathophysiological changes as well as the expression of the cyclic adenosine monophosphate response element-binding protein (CREB), phosphorylated CREB (P-CREB), and CREB target proteins (c-fos

Polarity-dependent modulation of multi-spectral neuronal activity by transcranial direct current stimulation.

The ability to preferentially deploy neural resources to the visual space is an important component of normative cognitive function, however, the population-level cortical dynamics that sub-serve this ability are not fully understood. Specifically, rhythmic activity in the occipital cortices (e.g., theta, alpha, and gamma oscillations) has been strongly implicated in this cognitive process, but these neural responses are difficult to non-invasively manipulate in a systematic manner. In this study, transcranial direct-current stimulation (tDCS) was used to modulate brain activity, while high-de

Effects of acute aerobic exercise on neural correlates of attention and inhibition in adolescents with bipolar disorder.

Executive dysfunction is common during and between mood episodes in bipolar disorder (BD), causing social and functional impairment. This study investigated the effect of acute exercise on adolescents with BD and healthy control subjects (HC) to test for positive or negative consequences on neural response during an executive task. Fifty adolescents (mean age 16.54±1.47 years, 56% female, 30 with BD) completed an attention and response inhibition task before and after 20 min of recumbent cycling at ~70% of age-predicted maximum heart rate. 3 T functional magnetic resonance imaging data were an
