INTRODUCTION: Peripheral intravenous catheters (PIVCs) are the most commonly used invasive health care devices; however, 35%-50% of PIVCs fail due to complications such as phlebitis, infiltration, occlusion, and infection. Health care professionals (HCPs) play a critical role in minimizing these risks through adherence to evidence-based practices (EBPs).
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this project was to promote EBPs regarding education and training for HCPs caring for a patient with a PIVC in a trauma/trauma surgery unit in Mississippi, USA.
METHODS: The project was guided by the JBI Evidence

Common truncus arteriosus is a rare congenital cardiac malformation. This case was associated with a ventricular septal defect (VSD) and also combined with pulmonary hypertension, which, together with the young age of the child and the fragility of the tissues, demanded a high degree of refinement in surgical operation, making the procedure complex and extremely risky. This case reports the postoperative care experience of a child with a common arterial trunk (CAT) combined with a VSD and pulmonary hypertension. Throughout the postoperative nursing process, blood pressure fluctuations should b…

OBJECTIVE: Study the preliminary efficacy of a telephone intervention, Family Intervention: Telephone Tracking-Nursing Home (FITT-NH) for improving dementia caregivers' adjustment following nursing home placement.
METHODS: Caregivers were enrolled on average 6 weeks following the care-recipients' placement in a nursing home. Baseline assessment included self-report measures of caregiver emotional functioning, staff-caregiver interactions, placement satisfaction, health-related quality of life, and social support. Caregivers were randomly assigned to FITT-NH (n = 24) or a non-contact control c

BACKGROUND: Malignant bowel obstruction (MBO) in patients with advanced gynecologic cancer (GyCa) can negatively impact clinical outcomes and quality of life. Oncology nurses can support these patients with adequate tools/processes.
PROBLEM: Patients with GyCa with/at risk of MBO endure frequent emergency or hospital admissions, impacting patient care.
APPROACH: Optimizing oncology nurses' role to improve care for patients with GyCa with/at risk of MBO, the gynecology oncology interprofessional team collaborated to develop a proactive outpatient nurse-led MBO model of care (MOC).
OUTCOMES:

Childhood sexual abuse has a lifelong impact on its survivors and may affect the childbearing experience in a variety of ways. Nurses caring for women during the perinatal period can benefit from understanding the phenomenon of child sexual abuse, its prevalence, and the sequelae experienced by childbearing women. Signs, symptoms, and correlates of prior sexual abuse manifested during the perinatal period are described, and nursing care responses are suggested. Nurses may be able to use this information to recognize survivors and facilitate both a positive childbirth experience and the healing

BACKGROUND: This article describes one school's process to maintain their undergraduate nursing simulation program during campus closure and clinical placement suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
METHOD: After the campus closure, faculty replaced clinical hours with simulation using virtual clinical education such as telehealth with standardized patients (SPs), virtual simulations using commercial products, and virtual faculty skills instruction.
RESULTS: Using virtual clinical education and SP-based telehealth simulations provided an alternative for 50% of the required direct patient c

People experiencing homelessness have a high prevalence of substance abuse and mental and physical problems. Although they have very complex health needs, they face many barriers that reduce their access to health care and social services. Several research studies have shown the need to implement adapted nursing interventions to address these crucial access issues. In this article, we present the results of a critical ethnography of outreach nurses who work with homeless people (n = 12). Robert Castel's theoretical model, which focuses on the process of social disaffiliation, provided the conc

AIM: To explore determinants impacting an Electronic Health Record-based information system implementation and their association with implementation fidelity based on the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF) from nurses' perspectives.
DESIGN: Exploratory sequential mixed-method design.
METHODS: In stage one, semi-structured interviews with 53 purposively selected nurses informed the exploration of TDF domains influencing the implementation of the information system with directed content analysis. In stage two, a cross-sectional survey, informed by the qualitative findings, was conducted among

BACKGROUND: Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) is a continuity of midwifery care model for women in all risk groups (Low, Moderate and High) available at a tertiary metropolitan hospital in Australia. This demonstration study aimed to compare the clinical effectiveness of MGP with other models of care at the hospital.
METHODS: Comparisons of clinical outcomes were made between women who received care under MGP (n=618) and those receiving 'Other' modes of care at the hospital (n=3548) between three risk categories over a 15-month period.
RESULTS: There were more Low (MGP n=218, 35.3%, 'Other' n=7

BACKGROUND: Nurses are exposed to potentially psychologically traumatic events which can lead to operational stress injuries (OSI). Workplace reintegration after an OSI can be challenging, especially with repeated exposure to potentially traumatic scenarios and workplace demands. A workplace reintegration program (RP) originally developed for police officers may be of benefit for nurses returning to work after an OSI. The purpose of this study is to investigate the perceived need for an RP for nurses, and its potential contextualization and implementation in the nursing context using an implem

The Institute of Medicine has challenged nurses in recent years to practice to the fullest extent of their training and education. This article demonstrates application of this concept by use of example. It describes the processes that a group of nephrology nurses without graduate education who work in direct patient care followed to decrease the rate of transfusion reactions in clients undergoing apheresis receiving fresh frozen plasma fluid replacement.

Pain is a prevalent symptom in patients with chronic kidney disease, related to disease progression, comorbidities, and required immobility during dialysis treatment. Nurses must perform detailed pain assessments to manage pain effectively during hemodialysis treatment. This quality improvement project, reported using SQUIRE 2.0, aims to describe pain characteristics in chronic kidney disease patients in a hemodialysis unit clinic in Portugal, implement strategies to improve the pain assessment process in patients with chronic kidney disease during hemodialysis treatment, and assess nurses' sa

This paper sets out to explore the experience of newly qualified community nurses, one year on in practice, and to establish if the specialist course prepares them for the reality of practice. It presents a piece of action research evaluating the education process for community nurses through a series of cycles of self-reflection which lead to recommendations for both policy and curriculum changes. Our findings show that community nurses are very positive about their new roles and their work with clients and patients, that they are able to use their newly acquired analytical skills in their pr

The rate of fragile elderly patients affected by chronic kidney disease stage 5-5D is rapidly increasing. The decision making process regarding the start and the withdrawal of dialysis is often difficult for all those involved: patients, relatives, nephrologists and renal nurses. Therefore nephrologists and renal nurses are called to rapidly improve their theoretical and practical competence about the end-of-life care. The quality of clinical intervention and management requires a sound expertise in the ethical, legal, organizational and therapeutic aspects, not trivial nor even deductible fro

This study aimed to identify the learning needs of orthopaedic staff, develop a blended diabetes learning programme, and examine orthopaedic staff experiences of participating in the programme.
METHODS: Nurses and physicians from endocrinological and orthopedic wards at three hospitals in the capital region of Denmark (Bispebjerg, Herlev, Nordsjællands Hospitals) participated in group concept mapping. A total of 193 orthopedic staffmembers completed an e-learning m
