[Nutritional assessment of a university population].

In this work, we have planned to perform a nutritional assessment of a group of 50 students from the University of Granada, to which questionnaires have been administered relating to 24-hour remembrance of type and frequency of food consumption, for 30 days. In order to know macro- and micronutrients intake, the results have been analyzed with DietSource software. At the same time, anthropometrical measurements have been taken to verify their possible change during the study period. We have been able to observe a protein intake slightly higher than the recommended intake, similarly to what occ

Current status of nutritional deficiencies in Canadian aboriginal people.

Since the Nutrition Canada Survey (1973) there has been clear evidence that Aboriginal people have low intakes of many nutrients such as iron, vitamin D, calcium, folate, vitamin A, and fluoride. Recent surveys suggest that the situation has not changed. Children are most likely to be affected clinically. More than half of Aboriginal children in some subpopulations in Manitoba suffer a period of iron deficiency, which may affect development. Nutritional rickets is still a common problem in Manitoba. We have seen cases of megaloblastic anemia due to folate deficiency. The relationship of the we

Intravenous nutritional support and the surgeon: where next?

Over the past twenty five years the development of total parenteral nutrition has in many ways revolutionised the practice of surgery. It has enhanced survival in otherwise high mortality operations such as oesophageal surgery, especially with anastomotic complications. It has changed significantly the management of fistulae, either post operative or associated with diseases such as Crohn's enteritis. Here a basic general principle is applied--that a fistula will close if there is no distal obstruction and the throughput can be diminished. This can be achieved by withholding oral feeding and u

Nutritional support of the child with cancer.

The purpose of this article is to outline how the disease, treatment, and psychological state of a child with cancer impact on the child's nutritional status. The methods of assessing nutritional status, including anthropometric measurements, laboratory indices, clinical observation, dietary assessment, and psychosocial evaluation, are summarized. After nutrition assessment, the pediatric oncology nurse and the dietitian, along with the oncologist, the family, and the child, develop a plan of care. The specific roles of the pediatric oncology nurse and dietitian in the nutrition intervention a

Total parenteral nutrition during pregnancy.

Several years ago, most obstetricians would have thought that any disease severe enough to require parenteral nutrition would also lead to infertility or early pregnancy loss. Women with many complex disease states have now been successfully treated by TPN during pregnancy, resulting in favorable outcomes for both mother and fetus. Theoretically, these patients, if not supplied with an adequate amount of essential nutrients by TPN, might have experienced excessive perinatal morbidity and mortality. The difficulties involved with studying maternal-fetal exchange processes in humans leave consid

Efficacy of TPN in cirrhotic patients with bleeding esophageal varices .

The efficacy of TPN was evaluated in cirrhotic patients with portal hypertension and bleeding esophageal varices. Two groups of patients were studied: the first group underwent routine treatment and the second group was treated with TPN both pre-and postoperatively. Metabolic humoral parameters (proteins, electrolytes, gas levels) as well as specific nutritional parameters (anthropometric values, immune state, nitrogen balance) of the two groups were compared. The most suitable parenteral nutrition is assessed in cases where the cirrhotic patient shows a severe encephalopathy.

Nutrition, cancer, and intravenous hyperalimentation.

In over 1000 cancer patients treated with intravenous hyperalimentation (IVH), tumor growth has not been identified and catheter-related sepsis has been minimal. Studies in rats demonstrated that the host benefits more than the tumor during nutritional repletion, and any stimulation of tumor growth in the rat-tumor model could be manipulated with DNA specific drugs to benefit the host. A study of 65 malnourished cancer patients undergoing oncologic therapy and treated with IVH indicated that much of the immune suppression in these patients was the result of malnutrition coincident with or seco

Microbiota and nutrition as risk and resiliency factors following prenatal alcohol exposure.

Alcohol exposure in adulthood can result in inflammation, malnutrition, and altered gastroenteric microbiota, which may disrupt efficient nutrient extraction. Clinical and preclinical studies have documented convincingly that prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) also results in persistent inflammation and nutrition deficiencies, though research on the impact of PAE on the enteric microbiota is in its infancy. Importantly, other neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorders, have been linked to gut microbiota dysbiosis. The combined evidence fr

Programmes to manage food selectivity in individuals with autism spectrum disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex group of neurodevelopmental disorders characterised by impaired social communication and restricted interests/repetitive behaviours. In this regard, sensory processing difficulties and delayed oral motor skills often predispose individuals with ASD to food selectivity (FS). It is usually associated with repetitive eating patterns that can lead to multiple malnutrition conditions. The objective of this narrative review is to present an overview about the existing nutritional interventions aiming at promoting a healthy eating pattern and addressing foo

Microbiological safety of nutrition formulas with different feeding systems.

INTRODUCTION: Enteral nutrition (EN) is a form of nutrition therapy indicated for patients who cannot eat or do not tolerate oral nutrition. However, because of their nutrient-rich composition, EN formulas provide a favorable environment for microbial growth and present a risk for contamination by pathogens, potentially leading to gastrointestinal disorders and delaying patient recovery. This study analyzed the microbiological safety of two EN feeding systems (the open-system [OS] and the ready-to-hang [RTH] system) using liquid and powdered formulas over different infusion periods. METHOD: I

Dietary methionine regulation of cognitive function: Evidence, mechanisms, and implementation strategies.

Cognitive disorders, a rapidly growing public health concern, can be prevented by a healthy diet. Several studies have shown that protein intake is a key modulator of cognitive function. The development of precision nutrition has allowed the study of specific amino acids within proteins, with many studies reporting that the level of methionine (Met) intake plays a central role in modulating cognitive function. Methionine has both beneficial and detrimental effects on cognitive function, depending on various factors, and a comprehensive summary of its effects on brain health is urgently require

Diabetes UK evidence-based nutrition guidelines for the prevention and management of diabetes.

A summary of the latest evidence-based nutrition guidelines for the prevention and management of diabetes is presented. These guidelines are based on existing recommendations last published in 2011, and were formulated by an expert panel of specialist dietitians after a literature review of recent evidence. Recommendations have been made in terms of foods rather than nutrients wherever possible. Guidelines for education and care delivery, prevention of Type 2 diabetes, glycaemic control for Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease risk management, management of diabetes-related compl
