Post-Treatment Nutrition and Rehabilitation Support Is Associated with Reduced Psychological Distress After Early-Stage Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer Surgery: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Background/Objectives: Curative-intent surgery for early-stage upper gastrointestinal (GI) cancer causes substantial nutritional, functional, and psychological morbidity; whether an integrated post-treatment nutrition and rehabilitation pathway improves distress and survival is unclear. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 130 patients undergoing curative-intent esophagectomy or gastrectomy for early-stage esophagogastric cancer: 65 received a structured post-treatment nutrition and rehabilitation support program (Group A), and 65 received standard care (Group B). The primary

Effects of cartilage-supporting nutritional supplementation on knee osteoarthritis symptoms and quality of life in a 12-week randomized double-blind placebo-controlled pilot study.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a prevalent degenerative joint disease, often affecting the elderly, characterized by cartilage degradation and bone remodelling, leading to pain, stiffness, and impaired movement. This 12-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot study investigated the efficacy of a formulation containing collagen type II, glucosamine hydrochloride and chondroitin sulfate, in alleviating knee OA symptoms in subjects with mild to moderate knee pain. Fifty-four participants were enrolled, with 52 completing the study. Participants were assessed using the Knee injury and Ost

Comparison of complication rates, types, and average tube patency between jejunostomy tubes and percutaneous gastrostomy tubes in a regional home enteral nutrition support program.

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tubes are common enteral access devices for long-term enteral nutrition. Jejunostomy tubes (J-tubes) are able to provide postpyloric enteral access in patients who are not PEG tube candidates. There is a scarcity of literature comparing complication rates of J-tubes to PEG tubes. OBJECTIVE: To compare and characterize J-tube and PEG tube complications requiring tube replacement. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed on 560 patients discharged from the Northern Alberta Home Enteral Nutrition Support Program (NAHENSP) from Jan

The effect of non-nutritive sucking combined with oral motor stimulation and oral support on feeding performance in premature infants: A single-blind randomized-clinical trial.

PURPOSE: Feeding problems are common in premature infants (PIs) and may lead to negative consequences such as malnutrition, dehydration, excessive weight loss, as well as developmental and psychological deficits. Moreover, they are associated with increased length of hospital stay/cost. There is not enough evidence on how feeding problems should be treated in PIs. The goal of this study was to investigate the effects of non-nutritive sucking combined with oral motor stimulation and oral support on feeding performance in PIs. METHODS: A single-blind randomized clinical trial was performed on 4

Cannabinoid use for appetite stimulation and weight gain in cancer care: Does recent evidence support an update of the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism clinical guidelines?

Cannabinoids have been used medicinally for thousands of years. Clinical trials support their use for treatment of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting and HIV- and AIDS-related anorexia. Cancer anorexia cachexia syndrome (CACS) is a common debilitating condition and is associated with poor prognosis. The 2016 European Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition clinical guidelines on nutrition in cancer patients concluded that "there are insufficient consistent clinical data to recommend cannabinoids to improve taste disorders or anorexia in cancer patients." The increased attention that

Reduction of Parenteral Nutrition and Hydration Support and Safety With Long-Term Teduglutide Treatment in Patients With Short Bowel Syndrome-Associated Intestinal Failure: STEPS-3 Study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with intestinal failure associated with short bowel syndrome (SBS-IF) require parenteral support (PS) to maintain fluid balance or nutrition. Teduglutide (TED) reduced PS requirements in patients with SBS-IF in the randomized, placebo (PBO)-controlled STEPS study (NCT00798967) and its 2-year, open-label extension, STEPS-2 (NCT00930644). METHODS: STEPS-3 (NCT01560403), a 1-year, open-label extension study in patients with SBS-IF who completed STEPS-2, further monitored the safety and efficacy of TED (0.05 mg/kg/day). Baseline was the start of TED treatment, in either STEPS

A staged combined parenteral and enteral nutritional support strategy in an elderly patient with non-small cell lung cancer, severe pneumonia, type II respiratory failure, and pre-existing malnutrition: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Severe respiratory critical illness with multiple comorbidities poses substantial challenges to nutritional management. Malnutrition is common but often underrecognized, and the optimal nutritional strategy remains unclear in patients with concurrent malignancy and prior gastrointestinal surgery. This case report describes the clinical application of a staged combined parenteral nutrition (PN) and enteral nutrition (EN) strategy in an elderly patient with complex multimorbidity, aiming to illustrate a practical, dynamically adjustable approach to nutritional support in similar sett…

Gastrostomy tube care, replacement, and removal: Expanding the registered dietitian nutritionist scope of practice to provide more comprehensive enteral nutrition support and ongoing patient-centered care.

The prevalence of community-dwelling individuals dependent on home enteral nutrition (HEN), commonly delivered via gastrostomy tube (G-tube), continues to rise. Fragmented healthcare approaches often lead to limited follow-up support, inadequate education, and insufficient routine G-tube maintenance. This can lead to preventable complications, such as infection, tube dysfunction, dislodgement, and avoidable emergency department visits. The Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN), already central to HEN management, is uniquely positioned to provide comprehensive G-tube assessment and care. Inte

Randomized study of the clinical effects of ω-3 fatty acid-containing enteral nutrition support during neoadjuvant chemotherapy on chemotherapy-related toxicity in patients with esophageal cancer.

OBJECTIVES: Omega-3 (ω-3) fatty acids have potential positive effects during chemotherapy, such as body weight maintenance and muscle mass preservation. However, little is known about the effect this supplement might have on reducing chemotherapy-induced toxicities. The aim of this study was to determine the usefulness of ω-3 fatty acid supplementation in the reduction of chemotherapy-related toxicities. METHODS: Sixty-one patients undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy for esophageal cancer randomly received ω-3-rich enteral nutrition (EN; n = 31) or ω-3-poor EN support (n = 30) for 15 d during

[Observation of the impact of nutritional support with beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate on lean mass parameters of body composition in patients with obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus and metabolically associated fatty liver disease].

INTRODUCTION: Sarcopenic obesity is closely related to the occurrence of metabolically associated fatty liver disease (MASLD), but the factors that influence the effectiveness of dietary supplements in increasing muscle mass have not yet been clarified. OBJECTIVE: In our study, we examined the effects of a diabetes-specific dietary supplement containing beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate (HMB) on total body muscle mass after a treatment lasting for 6 months, and measured by densitometry in patients with type 2 diabetes who were treated for sarcopenic obesity and also met the criteria of MASLD.

Nutritional support and prophylaxis of azithromycin for pregnant women to improve birth outcomes in peri-urban slums of Karachi, Pakistan-a protocol of multi-arm assessor-blinded randomized controlled trial (Mumta PW trial).

BACKGROUND: Maternal undernutrition is critical in the etiology of poor perinatal outcomes and accounts for 20% of small-for-gestational-age (SGA) births. High levels of food insecurity, antenatal undernourishment, and childhood undernutrition necessitate the supplementation of fortified balanced energy protein (BEP) during pregnancy in low-income settings especially with scarce literature available in this subject. Hence, this paper extensively covers the protocol of such a trial conducted in an urban slum of Karachi, Pakistan. METHODS: The trial is community-based, open-labelled, four-arm,

Effects of a six-month intradialytic physical ACTIvity program and adequate NUTritional support on protein-energy wasting, physical functioning and quality of life in chronic hemodialysis patients: ACTINUT study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Protein-energy wasting (PEW) is common in hemodialysis patients and is a powerful predictor of morbidity and mortality. Although much progress has been made in recent years in identifying the causes and pathogenesis of PEW in hemodialysis patients, actual management by nutritional interventions is not always able to correct PEW. Some investigators suggest that physical exercise may increase the anabolic effects of nutritional interventions, and therefore may have a potential to reverse PEW. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of intra-dialytic progressive exercise tr
