Exploring e-scooter riders' risky behaviour: survey, observation, and interview study.

This study explores e-scooter riders' risky behaviour and motivation based on survey, observation, and interview studies. 192 responses from an online survey showed that e-scooter riders' behaviours are categorised into errors, violations, defensive behaviour, and proactive safety behaviour. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences in riding behaviour depending on riders' characteristics and usage patterns. Results from the observation and survey study showed a high frequency of risky behaviours such as not wearing a helmet, riding on the sidewalk against traffic flow, or riding w…

A Possible Mechanism of Laryngohyoid Fractures in Hanging: A Preliminary Observation.

Fractures of the hyoid bone, particularly the greater horns, and thyroid cartilage (superior horns) are known to be associated with hanging deaths. Depending on the literature, the frequency of these fractures varies from 0% to 83%. The mechanism underlying these fractures is believed to be direct compression or indirect traction from the ligature. The relationship of these structures with the cervical spine cannot be visualized with traditional internal examination, due to obstruction by surrounding soft tissue. Postmortem computed tomography scan offers an unobscured view of the relationship

Establishing Treatment Effectiveness in Fabry Disease: Observation-Based Recommendations for Improvement.

Fabry disease (FD, OMIM #301500) is caused by pathogenic GLA gene (OMIM #300644) variants, resulting in a deficiency of the α-galactosidase A enzyme with accumulation of its substrate globotriaosylceramide and its derivatives. The phenotype of FD is highly variable, with distinctive disease features and course in classical male patients but more diverse and often nonspecific features in non-classical and female patients. FD-specific therapies have been available for approximately two decades, yet establishing robust evidence for long-term effectiveness remains challenging. This review aims to

Longitudinal Observation of Two Giant Peripheral Atrophic Retinal Holes Left Untreated.

In this report, two rare cases of large atrophic peripheral retinal holes are described. Both patients presented during a routine visit without reporting any ocular symptoms. The holes did not exhibit significant risk factors for progression to rhegmatogenous retinal detachment: No signs of posterior vitreous detachment, vitreoretinal tractions, or retinal degeneration were visible. For such asymptomatic cases, international guidelines recommend a strict follow-up schedule; however, the unusual size of the holes raised significant concerns about the management of these retinal breaks. The adva

In vitro culture and morphological observation of human eye demodex mites.

The prevalence of human Demodex mites has surged in recent years, prompting significant concern among both patients and the medical community. This study aimed to investigate the survival duration and morphological alterations of Demodex folliculorum under diverse temperature conditions and in various culture media. We employed the eyelash sampling technique to procure the mites. The collected specimens were then subjected to culture at two distinct temperature ranges (16-22 °C and 4 °C) across a spectrum of media, including 30% tea tree oil (TTO), phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), pure water,

Observation of Multi-Phonon Emission in Monolayer WS2 on Various Substrates.

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have unique absorption and emission properties that stem from their large excitonic binding energies, reduced-dielectric screening, and strong spin-orbit coupling. However, the role of substrates, phonons, and material defects in the excitonic scattering processes remains elusive. In tungsten-based TMDs, it is known that the excitons formed from electrons in the lower-energy conduction bands are dark in nature, whereas low-energy emissions in the photoluminescence spectrum have been linked to the brightening of these transitions, either via defect scatte

Real-time observation of functional specialization among phosphorylation sites in CFTR.

Phosphoregulation is ubiquitous in biology. Defining the functional roles of individual phosphorylation sites within a multivalent system remains particularly challenging. We have therefore applied a chemical biology approach to light-control the state of single candidate phosphoserines in the canonical anion channel CFTR while simultaneously measuring channel activity. The data show striking non-equivalency among protein kinase A consensus sites, which vary from <10% to >1,000% changes in channel activity upon phosphorylation. Of note, slow phosphorylation of S813 suggests that this site is r

5-Year Observation Period of Quality of Life After Cochlear Implantation.

BACKGROUND: Only few studies assessed health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in cochlear implant (CI) patients for a period of more than 2 years. Some of these studies indicated that HRQoL might decrease after that period. The goal of our study was to see whether HRQoL indeed decreases or remains stable beyond 2 years after implant activation. METHODS: Twenty-five adults (11 women, 14 men; mean age at implantation: 60 ± 19 yr) with a unilateral CI for profound hearing loss were administered two questionnaires: the Nimjegen Cochlear Implant Questionnaire and the Health Utility Index 3 (HUI 3).

Clinico-radiologic subtypes and therapeutic observation of acute Marchiafava-Bignami disease.

We aimed to investigate the clinico-radiologic features of acute Marchiafava-Bignami disease (MBD) and its evolutionary process after effective treatment through subgroup comparison. The clinical and MRI data of 23 patients with acute MBD were retrospectively analyzed and divided into type A (12 cases, with entire callosal involvement) and type B (11 cases, with focal callosal involvement). The clinical assessments and MRI findings (before and after treatment) were compared between the two subtypes. Compared with type B, type A had lower MoCA (Montreal Cognitive Assessment) scores at admission

Microscopic observation of human airway ciliary movement using wheat germ agglutinin.

Ciliated cells in the airway epithelium generate mucus streams to remove extraneous particles and microorganisms by beating the motile cilia … cilia with fluorescently labeled wheat germ agglutinin (FL-WGA). The new method enables microscopic observation of ciliary movements without slicing or fragmenting the airway tissues. Since the airway epithelium is observed from the apical side, in situ orientation of ciliary beating can be analyzed using this method. Additionally, epithelial damage, and the …

Impaired pulmonary ventilation beyond pneumonia in COVID-19: A preliminary observation.

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) may severely impair pulmonary function and cause hypoxia. However, the association of COVID-19 pneumonia on CT with impaired ventilation remains unexplained. This pilot study aims to demonstrate the relationship between the radiological findings on COVID-19 CT images and ventilation abnormalities simulated in a computational model linked to the patients' symptoms. METHODS: Twenty-five patients with COVID-19 and four test-negative healthy controls who underwent a baseline non-enhanced CT scan: 7 dyspneic patients, 9 symptomatic patients without d

These findings suggest that congruency monitoring can occur at the motor level during action observations and is modulated by individual expertise. The modulation of expertise reflects in the special N400 effect and midline theta oscillation.
