Saddle-node bifurcation of periodic orbit route to hidden attractors.

Hidden attractors are present in many nonlinear dynamical systems and are not associated with equilibria, making them difficult to locate. Recent studies have demonstrated methods of locating hidden attractors, but the route to these attractors is still not fully understood. In this Research Letter, we present the route to hidden attractors in systems with stable equilibrium points and in systems without any equilibrium points. We show that hidden attractors emerge as a result of the saddle-node bifurcation of stable and unstable periodic orbits. Real-time hardware experiments were performed t…

Microbial applications for sustainable space exploration beyond low Earth orbit.

With the construction of the International Space Station, humans have been continuously living and working in space for 22 years. Microbial studies in space and other extreme environments on Earth have shown the ability for bacteria and fungi to adapt and change compared to "normal" conditions. Some of these changes, like biofilm formation, can impact astronaut health and spacecraft integrity in a negative way, while others, such as a propensity for plastic degradation, can promote self-sufficiency and sustainability in space. With the next era of space exploration upon us, which will see crew

Hydrodynamic spin-orbit coupling in asynchronous optically driven micro-rotors.

Vortical flows of rotating particles describe interactions ranging from molecular machines to atmospheric dynamics. Yet to date, direct obse … the optical torque field while freely diffusing in the plane. We observe that neighboring particles orbit each other with an angular velocity that depends on their spins. We derive an analytical model in the Stokes limit for pairs of spheres that quantitatively explains the observed dynamics. We then find that the geometrical nature of the low Reynolds …

Symmetry-breaking enabled topological phase transitions in spin-orbit optics.

The topological phase transitions (TPT) of light refers to a topological evolution from one type of spin-orbit interaction to another, which has been recently found in beam scattering at optical interfaces and propagation in uniaxial crystals. In this work, the focusing of off-axis and partially masked circular-polarization Gaussian beams are investigated by using of a full-wave theory. Moreover, two different types of spin-orbit interactions (i.e., spin-dependent vortex generation and photonic spin-Hall effect) in the focusing system are unified from the perspective of TPT. It is demonstrated…

Piezoelectric manipulation of spin-orbit coupling in a Wurtzite heterostructure.

The combination of piezoelectricity and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effect makes wurtzite semiconductors attractive for the development of exotic spin-related physics as well as spintronic applications. Triggering piezoelectricity, particularly by an external stimulus, provides a new perspective for manipulating SOC, but until now, a comprehensive understanding of this mechanism is lacking. Herein, by means of self-consistent calculations and Löwdin perturbation approach, we have explored the manipulation of SOC in the wurtzite (Al, Ga)N/GaN heterostructure by external stress-induced piezoelectr…

Spin-orbit coupling in low-lying electronic states of CuH.

Potential energy curves for the low-lying electronic states of CuH have been calculated using the MRCI method with a large active space containing the 3d, 4s, 4pz and 3d' orbitals of the copper atom. All electronic states of CuH correlating with the 3d10 4s1 (2S) and 3d9 4s2 (2D) states of Cu were included, and spin-orbit corrections were calculated using the MRCI wavefunctions. Potential energy curves were obtained for individual Ω states, and the Einstein A coefficients were computed for the spin-forbidden transitions from the low-lying electronic states to the X1Σ+ ground state. Diagonal an…

Semiconductivity induced by spin-orbit coupling in Pb9Cu(PO4)6O.

Recently, a possible room-temperature superconductor known as LK-99 (Pb10-xCux(PO4)6O (0.9 < x < 1.1)) has sparked a wave of research. However, many experimental works have proven that it is a semiconductor. At the same time, many theoretical works have reached the conclusion that it is a flat band metal. The inconsistency between theoretical and experimental works may be caused by neglecting the spin-orbit coupling effect in calculations. We performed calculations of electronic structure of Pb9Cu(PO4)6O with spin-orbit coupling, and the results show that it's indeed a semiconductor, not a met…

Metastatic Melanoma to the Orbit With Dedifferentiation: A Case Report.

We present the first documented case of metastatic melanoma to the orbit with dedifferentiation. A patient with a history of melanoma of the lip and other poorly differentiated carcinomas presented with both a sub-brow and an intraorbital mass. Radiographically and intraoperatively, the sub-brow mass communicated with the intraorbital mass via perineural spread along the supraorbital nerve. Histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of melanoma based on the melanocytic markers, SOX-10 and Melan-A; dedifferentiation was demonstrated within the orbital tumor. Two weeks following surgical debulking, …

Controlling Spin-Orbit Coupling to Tailor Type-II Dirac Bands.

NiTe2, a type-II Dirac semimetal with a strongly tilted Dirac band, has been explored extensively to understand its intriguing topological properties. Here, using density functional theory calculations, we report that the strength of the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in NiTe2 can be tuned by Se substitution. This results in negative shifts of the bulk Dirac point (BDP) while preserving the type-II Dirac band. Indeed, combined studies using scanning tunneling spectroscopy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy confirm that the BDP in the NiTe2-xSex alloy moves from +0.1 eV (NiTe2) to -0.3 eV…

Chiral Dirac-like fermion in spin-orbit-free antiferromagnetic semimetals.

Dirac semimetal is a phase of matter whose elementary excitation is described by the relativistic Dirac equation. In the limit of zero mass, … Dramatically, such symmetry is hidden in certain solid-state spin-1/2 systems with negligible spin-orbit coupling, where the spin degree of freedom is decoupled with the lattice. Therefore, the existence of the corresponding quasiparticle, dubbed as flavor Weyl fermion, cannot be explained by the conventional (magnetic) space group framework. The 4-fol …

[A case of communicating oncocytic carcinoma of the naso-orbit].

A patient with a left eyelid mass for more than 1 year was admitted. One year ago, the patient underwent left sinus mass resection in another hospital, and the postoperative histopathology showed oncocytic carcinoma. Imaging examination in our hospital revealed lesions in the left eyelid and inner canthus, involving the canalis nasolacrimalis and orbit. The orbital mass was removed under general anesthesia. The histopathological diagnosis was oncocytic carcinoma.

Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis of the Orbit Presenting as Periorbital Cellulitis.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare disease of the reticuloendothelial system. It is characterized by misguided differentiation of myeloid dendritic cell precursors. LCH most commonly presents in childhood and the clinical presentation is dependent on the site and extent of organ involvement. We report a case of orbital Langerhans cell histiocytosis in a 12-year-old boy who presented with left periorbital cellulitis with subsequent proptosis. He later underwent a successful left orbital-frontal-temporal craniotomy and is currently undergoing postoperative chemotherapy.

Primary mucinous adenocarcinoma of the orbit: A rare clinical entity.

Primary mucinous adenocarcinoma is an exceptionally rare neoplasm with a propensity for local recurrence and metastasis. We report the second case in the world literature of a primary mucinous adenocarcinoma of the orbit in a 66-year-old man suffering from pain, progressive protrusion of left eye, and a deep drop in vision on the left for several weeks. His first external examination revealed significant proptosis with downward displacement of the left globe with no signs of lagophthalmos. A limitation of abduction was also noted. A CT of the orbit with and without contrast showed intra- and e…
