Sliding to predict: vision-based beating heart motion estimation by modeling temporal interactions.

PURPOSE: Technical advancements have been part of modern medical solutions as they promote better surgical alternatives that serve to the benefit of patients. Particularly with cardiovascular surgeries, robotic surgical systems enable surgeons to perform delicate procedures on a beating heart, avoiding the complications of cardiac arrest. This advantage comes with the price of having to deal with a dynamic target which presents technical challenges for the surgical system. In this work, we propose a solution for cardiac motion estimation. METHODS: Our estimation approach uses a variational fr

Hip preservation surgery for adolescents and young adults with Post-Perthes Sequelae.

BACKGROUND: Impingement ensures a narrow arc of pathologic loading in adolescent hips with sequelae of Perthes Disease. Proper surgical interference when the hip is still in the pre-arthritic stage restores function and protects the young hip from early degenerative changes. METHODS: Osteochondroplasty at the femoral head-neck junction and relative lengthening of the femoral neck by distal transfer of the greater trochanter was performed for 12 adolescents with combined intra-articular/extra-articular impingement due to sequelae of Perthes disease in terms of coxa magna, coxa plana, coxa brev

Lower trapezius muscle transfer for reconstruction of elbow extension in brachial plexus injuries.

Elbow extension is a prerequisite for adequate hand position. Muscle transfers are often employed in partial injuries of the brachial plexus, when neurological surgery is unlikely to achieve desired results. The posterior deltoid and latissimus dorsi are the two muscles most commonly used for transfer but there are few alternatives when these two muscles are paralysed. We now report on the successful transfer of the lower trapezius muscle to reconstruct triceps function in three patients with longstanding lesions of the brachial plexus that had not been previously treated surgically.

A functional role for the middle extracellular region of the neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) in axonal fasciculation and orientation.

A new monoclonal antibody (mAb HR1) was used to study the function of a previously neglected region in the extracellular domain of the neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM). Application of mAb HR1 in retina organ culture interferes with several axonal functions in the developing eye. The antibody disturbs the orientation of axons growing in the peripheral retina and the tracking of axons in the middle retina. In the central retina, fasciculation is disturbed and a proportion of the ganglion cell axons do not leave the eye at the optic fissure but are misrouted to the contralateral side of the r

3D Computational Modeling of Blast Wave Transmission from External Ear to Cochlear Hair Cells.

The human ear is a complex biomechanical system that transduces sound or blast waves into cochlear hair cells for sensory perception. Understanding the full pathway of mechanical energy transmission, from the external ear through the middle ear and into the cochlear sensory structures, is essential for advancing clinical surgical treatment, hearing protection, and auditory prostheses. Over the past two decades, finite element (FE) modeling has become a powerful tool for analyzing ear mechanics, offering insights that complement experimental limitations. This chapter summarizes major developmen

Lung Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT): Challenging Scenarios and New Frontiers.

Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT) has emerged as a pivotal treatment modality for early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), offering highly precise, high-dose radiation delivery. However, several clinical challenges remain, particularly in the treatment of central or ultracentral tumors, which are located near critical structures such as the heart, bronchi, and great vessels. The introduction of MRI-guided SBRT has significantly improved targeting precision, allowing for better assessment of tumor motion and adjacent organ structures. Additionally, SBRT has demonstrated efficacy in m

RT-SRTS: Angle-agnostic real-time simultaneous 3D reconstruction and tumor segmentation from single X-ray projection.

Radiotherapy is one of the primary treatment methods for tumors, but the organ movement caused by respiration limits its accuracy. Recently, 3D imaging from a single X-ray projection has received extensive attention as a promising approach to address this issue. However, current methods can only reconstruct 3D images without directly locating the tumor and are only validated for fixed-angle imaging, which fails to fully meet the requirements of motion control in radiotherapy. In this study, a novel imaging method RT-SRTS is proposed which integrates 3D imaging and tumor segmentation into one n

4D modelling of fluid mechanics in the zebrafish embryonic heart.

Abnormal blood flow mechanics can result in pathological heart malformation, underlining the importance of understanding embryonic cardiac fluid mechanics. In the current study, we performed image-based computational fluid dynamics simulation of the zebrafish embryonic heart ventricles and characterized flow mechanics, organ dynamics, and energy dynamics in detail. 4D scans of 5 days post-fertilization embryonic hearts with GFP-labelled myocardium were acquired using line-scan focal modulation microscopy. This revealed that the zebrafish hearts exhibited a wave-like contractile/relaxation moti

Modeling childbirth: elucidating the mechanisms of labor.

The process of childbirth and the mechanisms of labor have been studied for over a century, beginning with simple measurements of fetal skull and maternal pelvis dimensions. More recently, X-rays, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging have been used to try and quantify the biomechanics of labor. With the development of computational technologies, biomechanical models have emerged as a quantitative analysis tool for modeling childbirth. These methods are well known for their capabilities to analyze function at the organ scale. This review provides an overview of the state-of-the-art finite

[Hearing evaluation in patients with vertigo].

INTRODUCTION: Vertigo is one of the most frequent and disturbing sensations that the practicing otolaryngologist is called upon to treat. Vertigo is the illusory sensation of motion. True vertigo is caused by pathology in the peripheral end organ, the vestibular nerve, and the pathways that connect them in the brainstem and rarely, in the cortex. AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate hearing in people with vertigo according to the etiology of balance disorders. The study comprised 127 patients treated in our clinic between 1999 and 2004, 88 women and 39 men (254 ears) aged 24-90 years. T
