A 25-year-old man with chronic swelling of the right knee had a mass that was eventually palpated in the suprapatellar pouch. Arthrotomy and biopsy revealed localized nodular synovitis. Since surgical excision of the mass the patient has been asymptomatic. While localized nodular synovitis generally appears as an internal derangement of the joint, this patient had signs and symptoms of chronic monoarthritis.

We report a case of seminoma of the testis metastatic to the retroperitoneum. Biopsy of the retroperitoneal mass revealed anaplastic seminoma. No testicular mass could be palpated. Testicular ultrasonography showed a hypoechoic 3 X 2 cm. area in the left testis suggestive of a primary testicular tumor, most likely a seminoma. Histological evaluation of the resected testis revealed fibrous tissue but no definable tumor.

A 9-year-old child presented with a palpable swelling under the right lower lid for 3 years. On examination, the swelling was nontender, well circumscribed, and cystic on palpation. A computed tomography scan showed a well circumscribed, hyperdense lesion in the inferior orbit with no anatomic connection with the paranasal sinuses. Transcutaneous orbitotomy was performed, and the lesion was excised in toto. Histopathological examination was suggestive of a mucocele.

Subcutaneous emphysema occurs when air is forced beneath the tissue, leading to swelling, crepitus on palpation and has the potential to spread along the fascial planes. This report describes the youngest case of subcutaneous emphysema related to dental treatment that has been documented to date. In addition to the patient's age, the case is of interest because periorbital subcutaneous emphysema is a rarest complication of stainless steel crown procedure.

Warthin's tumor undoubtedly is the most frequent monomorphic adenoma of the major salivary glands. Clinically, it appears as a slow-growing tumor often fluctuant on palpation due to its cystic nature. The treatment of choice is complete excision with wide tumor-free margins. This article highlights a case of Warthin's tumor of the parotid gland in an elderly male patient along with a review of the literature on the aforementioned pathology.

Burned-out tumor of the testis is a rare clinical entity. It generally presents with metastases and is nonpalpable in testicular palpation. We present a case of testicular burned-out tumor having supraclavicular and retroperitoneal lymph node metastases. Imaging findings of such tumors have insufficiently been documented in radiology literature. Scrotal sonography is crucial in detecting the regressed tumors especially in patients with extragonadal metastasis of a testicular primary.

A 38-year-old male patient presented with symptoms of bladder outflow obstruction. Rectal palpation revealed a giant prostate. Sonography only confirmed the enlarged prostate. Magnetic resonance imaging showed, on both T1- and T2-weighted sequences, a large, inhomogenously hypointense, encapsulated prostate tumor encompassing the entire prostate. No capsular penetration or seminal vesicle invasion was seen. Transurethral biopsy of the prostate was performed. Histology demonstrated a prostate metastasis of colorectal carcinoma.

Thyroid teratomas are rare neoplasms in adults (only 19 cases have been reported in the world literature). We report the case of a 55-year-old woman with a paratracheal mass, paralysis of the recurrent nerve, dyspnea, and results of palpation suggestive of malignancy. Total thyroidectomy was performed and anatomopathological study disclosed a benign thyroid teratoma in adult. We discuss this case and review the literature on adult thyroid teratomas.

Implanted contraceptive capsules occasionally cannot be removed by means of palpation with local dissection, and imaging guidance is necessary. The authors report obtaining a single antero-posterior radiograph of the upper arm followed by sonography to localize the capsule and to allow precise marking of the skin over the capsules. The method can be performed quickly and is inexpensive and effective, allowing the localization and removal procedures to be scheduled independently.

Pneumomediastinum and subcutaneous emphysema of the neck occur exceptionally in spontaneous, retroperitoneal perforation of the sigmoid colon. These signs, in association with a septic syndrome and multiple organ failure, mandate the search of a gastrointestinal tract perforation, even in the absence of digestive symptoms. Careful deep palpation of the abdomen may determine the abdominal origin of the septic focus and thereby provide justification for exploratory laparotomy without further diagnostic investigations.

Imaging a breast that has had cancer and been reconstructed has inherent problems, mostly because the reconstruction and the implant may be obscuring recurrence. It should, therefore, be emphasized that such patients require frequent follow-up. Perhaps every 6 months they also need skillful palpation as well as mammography with proper techniques that image as much of breast tissue as possible with the implant displaced as much as possible.

Ultrasonography of 8 cases of cystic mass in extremities (7 ganglions, 1 popliteal cyst) were reviewed and evaluated. The lesions were demonstrated as round, oval or flattened shaped masses with no echo signal. However, in most cases, there was no sign of posterior echo enhancement, which may be the effect of posterior bony structure. It seemed important to handle probe with adequate palpation, which enables examiner to get further anatomical information.

The authors suggest a clinical procedure of parasternal mediastinopleuroscopy which assures intercostal examination, instrumental palpation and biopsy of neoplasms of the anterior mediastinum without causing considerable trauma. The procedure makes it possible to assess operability and to determine optimal access for surgical removal of tumor. The procedure was used in clinic in 35 cases; in 23 of them, intervention was limited to biopsy, while 12 cases underwent radical surgery.

Duodenal Sounds, provided they are sufficiently rigid, can be introduced actively with simultaneous x-ray control. Good sedation promotes rapid passage; further important aids are: appropriate positioning of the patient, instillation of air, and palpation. In recent years, intravenous administration of diazepam and metoclopramid has proved successful as premedication. The described procedure reduces the strain on the children and the amount of time required by the medical staff.

Two adults had the hypovascular nature of their hepatic abscesses ascertained by total body opacification. In one, total body opacification identified the hypovascular nature of the lesion, facilitating its differentiation from vascular hepatoma. In the other, the clinical diagnosis was acute cholecystitis with empyema of the gallbladder, and the liver was normal to inspection and palpation at celiotomy. Total body opacification may be helpful in the examination of abdominal masses.

INTRODUCTION: Cryptorchidism or undescended testis (UDT) is one of the most common congenital anomalies in male infants.
