[Tubeless methods of the assessment of functional state of digestive organs in hormonal disorders].

The function of the stomach, pancreas, and intestine was studied in patients with chronic duodenitis without resorting to intubation. Disordered relationships between the hormones participating in the functioning of the hypophyseo-antral and entero-thyroid axis, resulting in trophic disorders in the gastroduodenal zone, are associated with characteristic shifts shown by methods of investigation other than intubation: drastically increased acid production in the presence of unchanged activity of urinary amylase before and after nutrient stimulation, combined with amylasorrhea. Diagnostic method

Soy isoflavones recover pancreatic islet function and prevent metabolic dysfunction in male rats.

We tested whether chronic supplementation with soy isoflavones could modulate insulin secretion levels and subsequent recovery of pancreatic islet function as well as prevent metabolic dysfunction induced by early overfeeding in adult male rats. Wistar rats raised in small litters (SL, three pups/dam) and normal litters (NL, nine pups/dam) were used as models of early overfeeding and normal feeding, respectively. At 30 to 90 days old, animals in the SL and NL groups received either soy isoflavones extract (ISO) or water (W) gavage serving as controls. At 90 days old, body weight, visceral fat

Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumor in a Young Child With Tuberous Sclerosis Complex 1.

Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PNETs) occur in the context of tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC). To date, PNETs in association with TSC have been described almost exclusively in adults and in the context of TSC2. We present the evaluation of a PNET in a young child with TSC1. A 3-year, 6-month-old boy with TSC1 was found on surveillance to have a small pancreatic lesion measuring 0.4 cm on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The lesion showed interval enlargement to 1 cm on serial MRI studies during the ensuing 16 weeks. Endocrine laboratory tests did not reveal a functional tumor. The patient

IgG4-related sclerosing cholangitis mimicking cholangiocarcinoma.

A man in his 70s presented to the emergency department with painless obstructive jaundice. Initial blood test results show a predominantly cholestatic picture with elevated tumour markers, and imaging findings are concerning for a pancreatic head neoplasm or cholangiocarcinoma with involvement of the entire common bile duct. The patient underwent staging laparoscopy and biopsies including peritoneal washing, but did not identify any features of malignancy. Immunoglobulin G and immunoglobulin G4 testing were subsequently tested and shown to be elevated. The provisional diagnosis of immunoglobul

Pancreatic exocrine insufficiency occurs in most patients following pancreaticoduodenectomy.

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic exocrine insufficiency (PEI) is a well-defined complication of malignant diseases and pancreatic resection; however, study results of PEI are less consistent. Assessment of PEI by estimation of fecal elastase (FE)-1 in stool by enzyme-linked immunosorbent essay (ELISA) is a relatively inexpensive, noninvasive, and simple test. This study assessed exocrine function of pancreas following pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) by estimating FE-1. METHODS: This prospective hospital-based study involved 30 patients who had undergone PD for malignancy. All 30 patients had an uneventful

A Comparative Evaluation of Fibrosis in Patients With and Without Chronic Pancreatitis Undergoing Pancreatic Surgery.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Fibrosis is considered the gold standard for diagnosing chronic pancreatitis (CP) but has not been systematically studied across a large cohort of patients with and without pancreatitis undergoing different pancreatic surgeries. METHODS: Demographic, clinical, and radiologic data for patients undergoing total pancreatectomy with islet autotransplantation for indeterminate CP, recurrent acute pancreatitis (RAP), and definite CP; Whipple/Frey for indeterminate and definite CP; and distal pancreatectomy for serous cystadenoma between 2004 and 2023 were reviewed. Presence of PD-1 similarity genes in monocytes may promote the development of type 1 diabetes mellitus and poor prognosis of pancreatic cancer.

INTRODUCTION: To identify proteins and corresponding genes that share sequential and structural similarity with programmed cell death protein-1 (PD-1) in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) via bioinformatics analysis. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: All proteins with immunoglobulin V-set domain were screened in the human protein sequence database, and the corresponding genes were obtained in the gene sequence database. GSE154609 was downloaded from the GEO database, which contained peripheral blood CD14+ monocyte samples from patients with T1DM and healthy controls. The difference res

THE VALUE OF JIRGL'S FLOCCULATION TEST IN THE DIAGNOSIS OF JAUNDICE.

Jirgl's serum flocculation reaction was examined in a series of 121 patients with varying types of liver disease. Positive results were found in 90% of patients with proven extrahepatic obstructive jaundice. Strongly positive reactions were also obtained in primary biliary cirrhosis and chlorpromazine jaundice. One out of three cases of ;cholestatic' hepatitis gave a weakly positive reaction and the test may be of value in the diagnosis of this condition and in the rare recurrent conjugated hyperbilirubinaemia in which it is also negative.Eighty-four per cent of cases of portal cirrhosis were

LEAP2 Regulates Insulin Secretion from INS-1E Beta Cells and Rat Pancreatic Islets: An In Vitro Study.

LEAP2 is an endogenous antagonist and inverse agonist of GHSR-1a, the receptor for acyl-ghrelin. Although LEAP2 is increasingly recognized as a regulator of appetite and glucose homeostasis, its direct effects on pancreatic endocrine cells remain incompletely understood. The present in vitro study evaluated whether LEAP2 modulates insulin secretion and the expression of insulin-related genes in INS-1E beta cells and isolated rat pancreatic islets. LEAP2 treatment altered selected components of the insulin-related expression profile in a model- and time-dependent manner. In INS-1E cells, LEAP2

Photo-click Decellularized Matrix Hydrogels for Generating Pancreatic Ductal Organoids.

Pancreatic ductal organoids (PDOs) generated from human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) can be used to model pancreatic diseases and to conduct drug screening/testing. However, current protocols for generating PDOs rely heavily on tumor-derived Matrigel, which has been shown to upregulate oncogenes. Furthermore, Matrigel has undefined composition and weak mechanical properties that hamper mechanistic studies of cell-material interactions. In this study, we explore photo-clickable decellularized small intestine submucosa-norbornene (dSIS-NB) hydrogels as a Matrigel replacement for genera

Diabetic strain (WBN/Kob) of rat characterized by endocrine-exocrine pancreatic impairment due to distinct fibrosis.

A spontaneously developed endocrine-exocrine pancreatic dysfunction was observed in the aged males of an inbred strain of Wistar rats, WBN/Kob. Nonobese male WBN/Kob rats developed glycosuria and hyperglycemia at around 9 months of age. Cumulative incidence of diabetes in male rats was 43% (33 of 76) at 12 months of age and reached 90% at the age of 21 months. In contrast, female rats did not become diabetic. Urinary excretion of amylase in WBN/Kob rats was significantly increased in comparison with control Wistar rats. Moreover, the exocrine pancreatic function test was impaired in WBN/Kob ra

Starch synthase IIIa and starch branching enzyme IIb-deficient mutant rice line ameliorates pancreatic insulin secretion in rats: screening and evaluating mutant rice lines with antidiabetic functionalities.

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease spreading worldwide that has been reported to worsen the development and progression of other diseases (cancer, vascular diseases and dementia). To establish functional rice lines with anti-postprandial hyperglycaemic effects, we developed mutant rice lines, which lack one or two gene(s) related to starch synthesis, and evaluated their effects. Powder of mutant rice lines or other grains was loaded to rats fasted overnight (oral grain powder loading test). Incremental area under time-concentration curves (iAUC) were calculated with monitored blood gluco

[Prospects of intraoperative dynamic cholangio-manometry by tensor detectors with graphic recording of pressure function].

Intraoperative cholangio-manometry with a miniature tensor sensor and graphic recording of the results were conducted to study the function of the major duodenal papilla in 53 patients. A periodical activity of the ampulla of the papilla was revealed, which was characterized by certain values of the peak and basal pressure, and duration of contraction and relaxation periods. The numerical values and the pattern of the pressure curve differed in patients with obstructive cholecystitis, biliary pancreatitis, and a concrement incarcerated in the ampulla of the papilla. The informativeness of the

Severe Hypertriglyceridemia-Induced Pancreatitis Presenting With Diabetic Ketoacidosis in a Pediatric Patient.

Hypertriglyceridemia (HTG) is a recognized cause of acute pancreatitis (AP) in adults, but it remains an uncommon etiology in pediatric patients, particularly when occurring concurrently with new-onset diabetes mellitus (DM) and diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). We present the case of a previously healthy 12-year-old female who developed severe hypertriglyceridemia-induced acute pancreatitis with simultaneous DKA at initial presentation of type 1 diabetes. The patient arrived at the emergency department with acute epigastric pain, emesis, diarrhea, and severe dehydration. Physical examination revea

Targeting HMGB1/TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway by protocatechuic acid protects against l-arginine induced acute pancreatitis and multiple organs injury in rats.

Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a common pancreatic inflammation associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. AP may be mild or severe which can spread systemically causing multiple organs failure (MOF) and even death. In the current study, protocatechuic acid (PCA), a natural phenolic acid, was investigated for its possible protective potential against L-arginine induced AP and multiple organs injury (MOI) in rats. AP was induced by L-arginine (500 mg/100 g, ip). Two dose levels of PCA were tested (50 and 100 mg/kg, oral, 10 days before L-arginine injection). PCA successfully protected aga
