INTRODUCTION: Globally, the COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted the provision of maternal health services, especially facility-based delivery. However, there is little evidence on the proportion of women who delivered at the health facility in various locations and the factors that influenced women's decision-making in choosing a place of delivery during and amid the COVID-19 restrictions. Therefore, this study assessed the prevalence and factors associated with health facility delivery during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Tamale Metropolis of Ghana.
METHODS: An analytical cross-sectional

The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated the critical importance of understanding how infectious diseases spread across space and time, as transmission patterns often vary considerably between regions. Despite the significant impact of COVID-19 in Saudi Arabia, limited research has comprehensively examined the evolution of its spatial clustering and hotspot dynamics at the provincial level throughout different phases of the pandemic. This study investigates the spatiotemporal dynamics of COVID-19 across Saudi Arabia's administrative provinces from March 2020 to August 2022 using an integrated sp

BACKGROUND: Incivility among workers in the health sector is recognized as an occupational hazard. The COVID-19 outbreak brought sudden and profound changes to many health care settings, many of which have been identified as antecedents to workplace incivility. The purpose of this retrospective study was to explore the experiences of registered nurses with workplace incivility, cyber-incivility, and incivility outside of work during the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic.
METHODS: This mixed-methods study used convenience sampling. Data were collected from June to September 2020 via an onli

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has caused an unprecedented health crisis around the world, not least because of its heterogeneous clinical presentation and course. The new information on the pandemic emerging daily has made it challenging for healthcare workers (HCWs) to stay current with the latest knowledge, which could influence their attitudes and practices during patient care. This study is a follow-up evaluation of changes in HCWs' knowledge, attitudes, and practices as well as anxiety levels regarding COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic. Several outbreaks of undiagnosed severe disease occurred in the Democratic Republic of Congo over the last year. Although this is not completely unusual, at least one of them raised an international concern until the determinants of the excess death were identified. Far from representing a real threat for people living in wealthy countries, most of these events are context related, and mainly due to a combination of poverty-related conditions, such as malnutrition, historic plagues like malaria, and vulnerability to common respiratory infections. Even though these syndemic events remain usuall

The current COVID-19 pandemic very dramatically shows that the world lacks preparedness for novel viral diseases. In addition to newly emerging viruses, many known pathogenic viruses such as influenza are constantly evolving, leading to frequent outbreaks with severe diseases and deaths. Hence, infectious viruses are a recurrent burden to our daily life, and powerful strategies to stop the spread of human pathogens and disease progression are of utmost importance. Transient plant-based protein expression is a technology that allows fast and highly flexible manufacturing of recombinant viral pr

Extreme heat and wildfires have health implications for everyone; however, minority and low-income populations are disproportionately negatively affected due to generations of social inequities and discriminatory practices. Indigenous people in Canada are at a higher risk of many chronic respiratory diseases, as well as other non-communicable diseases and hospitalization, compared to the general population. These wildfires occurring during the COVID-19 pandemic have demonstrated how disruptive compounding disasters can be, putting minority populations such as First Nations, Metis, and Inuit tr

The continued detection of zoonotic influenza infections, most notably due to the avian influenza A H5N1 and H7N9 subtypes, underscores the need for pandemic preparedness. Decades of experience with live attenuated influenza vaccines (LAIVs) for the control of seasonal influenza support the safety and effectiveness of this vaccine platform. All LAIV candidates are derived from one of two licensed master donor viruses (MDVs), cold-adapted (ca) A/Ann Arbor/6/60 or ca A/Leningrad/134/17/57. A number of LAIV candidates targeting avian H5 influenza viruses derived with each MDV have been evaluated …

BACKGROUND: Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is responsible for the majority of acute lower respiratory infections in infants and can affect also older age groups. Restrictions linked to the emergence of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and their subsequent lifting caused a change in the dynamics of RSV circulation. It is therefore fundamental to monitor RSV seasonal trends and to be able to predict its seasonal peak to be prepared to the next RSV epidemics.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective descriptive study on laboratory-confirmed RSV infections from Bambino Gesù Children's Hospital in Rome fro

In May 2023 the World Health Organization (WHO) Director General announced the "end" of the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Although the scale of the pandemic was unprecedented in living memory, it had not been unforeseen. Previous outbreaks of viral respiratory disease have shown important lessons regarding the need to protect healthcare workers (HCW), and research has also been undertaken into the relative effectiveness of control measures and their resource implications. Relevant guidance for worker protection, including HCW protection, which existed at the onset

OBJECTIVES: The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic demonstrated that responses led solely by public health authorities are insufficient to manage pandemic, highlighting the need for coordinated inter-ministerial collaboration and an integrated, whole-of-government response system. In response, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) developed a framework for pan-ministerial joint exercises for novel infectious disease response in 2024. This report evaluates the feasibility of the framework, analyzes its strengths and areas for improvement identified during implementation, and dis
