Pandemic chilblains: Are they SARS-CoV-2-related or not?

The exact etiopathology of chilblains observed during the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is still unclear. Initially, SARS-CoV-2 appeared as the obvious causing agent, but two years of various investigations have failed to convincingly support its direct implication. Most affected individuals have no detectable virus, no anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies and no symptoms of COVID-19. Analyses of skin biopsies similarly failed to unambiguously demonstrate presence of the virus or its genome. In a recent hypothesis, SARS-CoV-2 would cause the lesions before being promptly eliminated by unu

The return of RSV during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) hospitalizations practically disappeared in 2020. Now, with Southern Hemisphere 2021 winter behind us, RSV has returned. Despite it is difficult to weigh the impact of pandemic mitigation measures on common respiratory virus circulation, it appears that acute respiratory infections in children are returning to their usual epidemiology.

Acute bronchiolitis during the COVID-19 pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: The autumn and winter bronchiolitis epidemics have virtually disappeared in the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our objectives were characterised bronchiolitis during fourth quarter of 2020 and the role played by SARS-CoV-2. METHODS: Prospective multi-centre study performed in Madrid (Spain) between October and December 2020 including all children admitted with acute bronchiolitis. Clinical data were collected and multiplex PCR for respiratory viruses were performed. RESULTS: Thirty-three patients were hospitalised with bronchiolitis during the study period: 28 corresponde

Monkeypox: Potentially another pandemic or a mere hoax?

Monkeypox is a vesicular, pustular illness caused by an orthopox virus. It has remained endemic to the Central and West African regions for the past four decades, with only a few outbreaks outside these regions. It is mainly transmitted by direct skin to skin with an infected individual who has developed pustules. Recently there have been major outbreaks in about fourteen countries of the world, and over nine hundred people have been infected. This short summary gives a review about the epidemiology, history, virulence, symptoms and prevention of Monkeypox, while addressing a major question th

Rwanda's Resiliency During the Coronavirus Disease Pandemic.

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has illustrated the wide range of preventative measures and responsive strategies of low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). LMICs have implemented lessons learned from previous periods of epidemics and uncertainties. Rwanda's pre-existing decentralized healthcare and mental health system which are in response to the mental health distress from the 1994 genocide, continues to be a formidable system that collaborate and combine efforts to address people's mental health needs. COVID-19 has heightened or exacerbated people's mental health within the c

The population genomic legacy of the second plague pandemic.

Human populations have been shaped by catastrophes that may have left long-lasting signatures in their genomes. One notable example is the second plague pandemic that entered Europe in ca. 1,347 CE and repeatedly returned for over 300 years, with typical village and town mortality estimated at 10%-40%.1 It is assumed that this high mortality affected the gene pools of these populations. First, local population crashes reduced genetic diversity. Second, a change in frequency is expected for sequence variants that may have affected survival or susceptibility to the etiologic agent (Yersinia pest

The Manchurian pandemic of pneumonic plague (1910-1911).

China's winter of 1910-1911 was one of its most difficult. A deadly airborne pneumonic plague, believed to have originated from tarbagan marmots, broke out in October 1910 in a northeastern Chinese province commonly known by the exonym Manchuria. The disease had a near 100 percent mortality rate, affecting mainly the lower socio-economic classes and eventually killing more than 60,000 people over six months. By April 1911, the epidemic was suppressed, in large part due to the efforts of a Western-educated Chinese physician, Wu Lian-Teh. Similar to the recent COVID-19 pandemic, the Great Manchu

Surgical Outcomes During COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: In December 2019, an outbreak of a novel coronavirus (COVID-19) occurred in China and became pandemic in March 2020. Patients undergoing surgery are a vulnerable risk of COVID-19 exposure/infection. The aim of the study was to determine the characteristics and outcomes of patients undergoing surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic in a third level reference hospital in Mexico. METHOD: IRB approved observational study (prospectively collected database) of general and surgical oncology procedures from 04/20-08/20. Patients preoperative data and surgical cases registered. COVID-19 detec

International trade resilience and the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Covid-19 pandemic represents a low-probability, high-impact systemic risk that has severely disrupted international trade, reshaping the patterns of globalization. Drawing from the concept of supply chain resilience, which involves both the ability of a system to withstand an impact (robustness) and recover from it (responsiveness), we investigate country-level trade resilience during the 1st wave of the pandemic. By employing Fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA), we identify configurations of country-level factors, i.e., country profiles, based on their effectiveness in enge

Effects of the pandemic crisis on entrepreneurship and sustainable development.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused an economic crisis in advanced economies greater than the 2008 economic crisis, as the latest Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) forecasts indicate. Entrepreneurship activity is an important factor to be considered to reduce this negative. The objective of this paper is to analyze the factors that favor entrepreneurship in the COVID-19 pandemic situation and explore the relationship between entrepreneurship and sustainable development. Monetary, fiscal, competitiveness, and business expectations are factors to consider. To achieve thi

Guillain-Barré Syndrome in the COVID-19 Pandemic.

There have been several reported cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS-CoV-2) infection that were associated with an increased incidence of neurological manifestations, including Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). This review aims to present information on the reports of GBS associated with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection. Our review is retrospective work examining articles published from the 1 April 2020 to the 8 May 2021 in the English language. We used the diagnostic criteria and classification published by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke and

Gambling and the COVID-19 pandemic: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: The impact of COVID-19 on mental health is tremendous. Since the beginning of the pandemic, several actors have raised concerns about the impact of the pandemic on gambling. Many actors fear a switch to online gambling in the context of the closure of many land-based gambling activities due to the restrictions imposed by public health authorities, such as physical distancing and lockdowns. This switch is worrisome because online gambling is considered a high-risk game. In that context, we need to know more about the impacts of the pandemic on gambling. This scoping review aims to s
