Case Report: A New Entity: Multiple Differentiated Variant of Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma With Advanced Clinical Behavior.

There are many histological morphological types of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), but the most frequently seen types are conventional. A single PTC commonly has a conventional and/or a variant morphological pattern. PTC with multiple (more than two) well-differentiated morphological patterns are extremely rare. We herein report the rare case of a 48-year-old male with initial diaphragmatic, pancreatic, and liver tumors from PTC. Then, the PTC was discovered following resection of these tumors, an ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (US-FNA) cytology of a huge mass in the thyroid's lef

High-risk cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck: results from 266 treated patients with metastatic lymph node disease.

BACKGROUND: Most patients with cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) of the head and neck (HN) are at low-risk (<5%) of developing metastatic SCC to regional lymph nodes. However, patients with unfavorable clinicopathologic factors often are under appreciated by clinicians but remain at higher risk for developing metastatic lymph node disease and dying. METHODS: Patients were identified who had metastatic cSCC to lymph nodes (parotid and cervical) of the HN and who were treated within the context of a multidisciplinary HN cancer service between 1980 and 2005 at Westmead Hospital (Sydney, A

Deep-learning-based radiomics of intratumoral and peritumoral CT images to differentiate benign from malignant parotid tumors.

This study aimed to explore the value of radiomics and deep learning features derived from intratumoral and peritumoral regions based on CT images in distinguishing benign from malignant parotid gland tumors (PGTs), and to evaluate whether integrating clinical, radiomics, and deep learning features could improve differential diagnostic efficiency. We retrospectively collected CT imaging and clinical data from 357 patients with confirmed parotid gland tumors (PGTs) after surgery. The dataset was randomly divided into two sets at a ratio of 7:3. Radiomics and deep learning features were extracte

Pre-operative Occurrence of First Bite Syndrome in Two Cases of Parotid Gland Tumour.

INTRODUCTION: First bite syndrome (FBS) is a gustatory-evoked painful condition that is characterised by the onset of severe electric shock-like pain in the periauricular region. In the majority of patients, FBS develops postoperatively. However, in rare instances, it may present in a pre-operative setting. CASE DESCRIPTION: Two cases of FBS developing preoperatively secondary to parotid gland tumour are presented. The patients, 54 and 30 years old, presented with complaints of electric shock-like pain localised over the periauricular region. In each case, the pain was triggered following the

Nodular fasciitis in the submandibular gland.

Nodular fasciitis (NF) is a benign, proliferative lesion of myofibroblasts. The most common site of the lesion is in the upper extremities or trunk. NF in the head and neck is next in frequency and is the most common site in infants and children. In adults, NF in the submandibular region is very rare. We report a case of a 53-year-old man with a submandibular mass, rapidly growing for 10 days. Cytologic findings revealed a few sheets or clusters of small, uniform spindle cells. The uniform spindle cells had centrally located round to ovoid nucleus, but there were no nuclear atypia and atypical

Allele-specific expression of the PSP gene in the mouse sublingual glands.

There are two known alleles of the mouse parotid secretory protein (PSP) gene: Pspa and Pspb. Pspa is carried by DBA/2J mice and Pspb is carried by C57BL/6J mice. Eighty-eight mice derived from a F1(C57BL/6J x DBA/2J) to DBA/2J backcross were analysed for PSP mRNA expression in the sublingual glands. Expression was found in heterozygous mice only. This indicates that only Pspb is expressed in this tissue. Furthermore, it maps the allele-specific sublingual gland determinant within 3.4 cM of Psp. Previous analysis of Pspb identified an enhancer-like region in position -4.6 to -3.1 kb that was n

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma arising from the subglottis: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma is an extremely rare disease that usually occurs in the parotid gland but can occur in a variety of sites such as the nasal cavity, paranasal sinus, and base of the tongue. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a rare case of epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma, which developed in the subglottic region. A 78-year-old Korean woman visited our hospital complaining of hoarseness, which had developed 1 month previously. Flexible laryngoscopy showed a round mass that blocked approximately 80 % of the tracheal diameter. Complete excision of the mass was carried

Imaging and review of a large pre-auricular pilomatrixoma in a child.

A 10-year-old girl presented with a mildly tender mass in the right preauricular region. The mass became larger, and the overlying skin turned purple. There was no clinical response to a course of either cephalexin or clarithromycin. The remainder of the head and neck examination was normal including normal facial nerve function. Lyme titers and a computed tomographic (CT) scan with contrast of the facial region were obtained. The CT scan demonstrated the lesion to be superficial to the parotid gland. The lyme titer was elevated and doxycycline was begun. The mass appeared to reduce in size af

Radiation-induced Xerostomia is Related to Stem Cell Dose-dependent Reduction of Saliva Production.

PURPOSE: Previous studies have shown that the mean dose to the parotid gland stem cell rich regions (Dmean,SCR) is the strongest dosimetric predictor for the risk of patient-reported daytime xerostomia. This study aimed to test whether the relationship between patient-reported xerostomia and Dmean,SCR is explained by a dose-dependent reduction of saliva production. METHODS AND MATERIALS: In 570 patients with head and neck cancer treated with definitive radiation therapy (RT), flow from the parotid (FLOWPAR) and submandibular/sublingual (FLOWSMSL) glands, and patient-reported daytime (XERDAY)

The single-strand DNA-binding protein SSB1 is involved in the expression of salivary gland radiation injury repair.

OBJECTIVES: Single-strand DNA-binding protein 1 (SSB1) plays a crucial role in the cellular response to DNA damage. This study aimed to explore the expression and regulation of SSB1 in normal rat salivary gland tissues and tissues following radiation, with a specific emphasis on its involvement in the repair of salivary gland injury. METHODS: A total of 45 adult SD rats were randomly assigned to one control group or eight experimental groups. In the control group, five rats were euthanized without irradiation, and their parotid gland tissues were collected for analysis. The experimental group

Dissemination of a Sjögren's syndrome-associated extranodal marginal-zone B cell lymphoma: circulating lymphoma cells and invariant mutation pattern of nodal Ig heavy- and light-chain variable-region gene rearrangements.

OBJECTIVE: Both the genesis and outgrowth of extranodal marginal-zone B cell lymphomas (MZLs) of the mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) type are generally thought to represent antigen-driven processes. We undertook this study to analyze lymphoma progression and dissemination outside of the MALT-type lesions. METHODS: Histopathologic and Ig heavy- and light-chain variable-region gene (V(H/L)) analyses were performed in sequential tissue samples from a patient with primary Sjögren's syndrome (SS) with glandular (parotid) manifestations and subsequent nodal dissemination of a low-grade MZL

Bilateral Multifocal Nodular Oncocytic Hyperplasia of the Parotid Gland Mimicking Warthin Tumor and Acinic Cell Carcinoma: A Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Multifocal nodular oncocytic hyperplasia (MNOH) of the salivary glands is a rare benign condition that can mimic both benign and malignant neoplasms, posing significant diagnostic challenges. Its bilateral and multifocal presentation is exceptionally uncommon. We present a unique case initially interpreted as bilateral Warthin tumor, later redefined as bilateral acinic cell carcinoma and finally reclassified as MNOH after comprehensive histopathological and immunohistochemical evaluation, and review the literature. CASE PRESENTATION: A 71-year-old woman presented with a long-stand

Anesthesia mumps with airway obstruction after radical nephrectomy: A case report and literature review.

Anesthesia mumps have rarely been reported. This article presents the diagnosis and treatment of a case of anesthesia mumps with airway obstruction in the urology department and reviews previous cases of the disease. A 58-year-old man had a history of hypertension and diabetes, and his blood pressure and glucose levels were well controlled. He underwent laparoscopic radical nephrectomy for a right renal tumor. Postoperatively, a swelling of approximately 5 × 4 cm was observed in the left parotid region and left eyelid, no palpable crepitation was detected, and the skin overlying the left parot…

Superficial parotidectomy versus extracapsular dissection: literature review and search for a gold standard technique.

Benign parotid tumours usually present as a slow-growing, asymptomatic mass in the pre-auricular region. Although they are uncommon, surgical excision is the mainstay of treatment due to the risk of malignant transformation in some benign tumours. Surgical techniques have evolved over the years, with superficial parotidectomy and extracapsular dissection being the current procedures of choice. There is currently no gold standard, and it remains unclear which surgical modality is the superior option. A literature review was performed in relation to the relative merits of each technique and to e

[Parotidectomy for parotid gland tumor using a retrograde approach from the peripheral branches of the facial nerve].

There are two techniques for excising a parotid gland tumor. The first technique is the anterograde approach, and the second is the retrograde approach. Although the anterograde approach has generally been adopted, the retrograde approach may be useful depending on the identification and dissection of the facial nerve and the localization of the tumor. We reviewed 35 patients who were surgically treated with a parotidectomy using the retrograde approach between 2002 and 2012 at Tenri Hospital. We also reviewed the clinical records for evidence of temporary or definitive injury to the facial ne

A case of cervical multicentric Castleman disease treated with intensity-modulated radiation therapy using helical tomotherapy.

Castleman disease (CD) is a rare lymphoproliferative disorder. Two clinical entities are described: a unicentric form with disease confined to a single lymph node region and a multicentric form characterized by generalized lymphadenopathy and systemic symptoms. Although surgery is regarded as standard therapy for the unicentric form, no consensus has been reached concerning the standard treatment for multicentric CD. We report here a case of cervical multicentric CD treated with intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), using helical tomotherapy to minimize xerostomia in comparison with co

Low-grade salivary duct carcinoma of the parotid gland: report of a case with immunohistochemical analysis.

Salivary duct carcinoma (SDC) is a highly aggressive malignancy of the salivary glands. However, one type of SDC, which shows minimal invasion and better prognosis, is known as low-grade SDC (LG-SDC). This report presents an additional case of LG-SDC of the parotid gland. The patient was a 38-year-old Japanese woman who noticed painless swelling of the left parotid region. Grossly, the cut surface of the tumor was cystic. Microscopically, the tumor showed a multicystic pattern, which was lined by eosinophilic to clear atypical cells with cribriform or Roman bridge patterns. An immunohistochemi…
