Ovalbumin-induced guinea pig model of rhinitis was assessed for its utility in the studies of rhinitis. Systemic sensitization and challenge with ovalbumin-induced rhinitis symptoms and an increase in anti-OVA-IgE and IgG titers, positive skin reactions and nasal lavage IL-4 concentration. Extracts of nematodes have been used as skin test antigens in the diagnosis of nematode infections for many years. Ascaris lumbricoides and Toxocara canis are two nematodes commonly involved in human parasitism, the latter being associated with the clinical condition of Visceral Larva Migrans. Immunological unresponsiveness to DNP—guinea-pig skin protein conjugate (DNP—GPSP) was induced by intravenous injections of dinitrobenzene-sulphonic acid (DNBSO3) given before, simultaneously, or after sensitization with DNP—GPSP. Guinea pigs with a genetically determined total deficiency of the fourth component of complement have been studied for various in vivo immunological functions. Passive cutaneous anaphylaxsis, contact and delayed hypersensitivity, and the cellular exudative response to a foreign body were normal. We established a model of asthma induced by trimellitic anhydride (TMA) in guinea pigs and assessed the role of sensitization in the development of their bronchial hyperresponsiveness, and relationship between bronchial responsiveness and bronchial inflammation. Clinical and serologic effects of TDI exposure were studied in 112 occupationally exposed plant workers. Sera were obtained before and after commencement of TDI production. All subjects were skin-tested with common inhalant allergens and a TDI-HSA conjugate.
