Discontinuation of prophylactic antimicrobial use in calves restores susceptibility in bovine respiratory pathogens.

OBJECTIVE: Antimicrobial resistance in pathogens causing bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is promoted by the prophylactic use of antimicrobials in calves. However, the impact of discontinuing their use under field conditions remains unclear. This study evaluated changes in antimicrobial susceptibility of Mannheimia haemolytica and Pasteurella multocida following cessation of prophylactic oxytetracycline and tilmicosin on a contract-rearing farm for Holstein heifer calves in Japan. METHODS: Oxytetracycline was administered via milk replacer at 20 mg/kg/d to calves aged 6-60 d of age and discon…

Antimicrobial susceptibility and genetic relatedness of respiratory tract pathogens in weaner pigs over a 12-month period.

The collaboration project VASIB aims at reducing the antibiotic consumption in pig production by integrating information from consulting expertise in clinical inspection, hygiene, epidemiology, microbiology and pharmacology. In this VASIB subproject, we investigated the antimicrobial susceptibility and relatedness of porcine respiratory tract pathogens. Bordetella bronchiseptica (n = 47), Pasteurella multocida (n = 18) and Streptococcus suis (n = 58) were obtained from weaner pigs at two farms. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed by broth microdilution according to CLSI standard…

Comparison of antemortem antimicrobial treatment regimens to antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of postmortem lung isolates from feedlot cattle with bronchopneumonia.

A retrospective study was performed to compare the treatment regimens in feedlot cattle that died with bovine respiratory disease (BRD) to t … (34 cattle). Susceptibility panels were performed. At least 1 BRD pathogen (Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, Histophilus somni, Mycoplasma bovis, or Arcanobacterium pyogenes) was isolated from 39 cattle, and 77% (30/39) had multiple organisms recovered. Mycoplasmal infections were common (25/34) and a major component of mixed infections (24/25). The major …

Feather corticosterone reveals effect of moulting conditions in the autumn on subsequent reproductive output and survival in an Arctic migratory bird.

For birds, unpredictable environments during the energetically stressful times of moulting and breeding are expected to have negative fitness effects. Detecting those effects however, might be difficult if individuals modulate their physiology and/or behaviours in ways to minimize short-term fitness costs. Corticosterone in feathers (CORTf) is thought to provide information on total baseline and stress-induced CORT levels at moulting and is an integrated measure of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal activity during the time feathers are grown. We predicted that CORTf levels in northern common eide

[Pathology and pathogenesis of ear and brain complications of pasteurellosis in rabbits bred for food].

Naturally occurring seropurulent rhinitis, often associated with bronchopneumonia or pleurisy, was examined by morphological, histological and bacteriological methods on 113 rabbits affected with pasteurellosis. These 63 dead and 50 slaughtered diseased rabbits were from different origins and included a variety of breeds and colours. In a high percentage (80% of cases), rhinitis induced by Pasteurella multocida is associated with seropurulent otitis media or otitis media and interna. Rarely in acute cases or often in chronic cases there is squamous metaplasia of the epithelium of the tympanic …

Head tilt in rabbits caused by pasteurellosis and encephalitozoonosis.

Rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) of non-dwarf (Group A) and dwarf (Group B) strains showing a common clinical sign of head tilt (torticollis) were examined. With 1 exception, all rabbits of group A had otitis and empyema of either one or both middle ears. Pasteurella multocida was isolated from pus and from the nose of all but 1 of these rabbits, and on occasion was also isolated from the brain. By contrast in all dwarf rabbits the presence of the protozoan Encephalitozoon cuniculi was confirmed both histologically and serologically. This parasite did not affect the ears of the animals but rath…

Polymicrobial Arthritis Following a Domestic Cat Bite Involving Rahnella aquatilis in an Immunocompetent Patient.

Cat bites frequently lead to polymicrobial infections due to deep puncture wounds that inoculate oral flora into poorly oxygenated tissues. While Pasteurella multocida is the most commonly implicated organism, environmental and atypical pathogens may also play a role, yet often go unrecognized. This article reports a rare case of polymicrobial septic arthritis caused by a domestic cat bite in an immunocompetent adult, with isolation of Rahnella aquatilis, a freshwater-associated Enterobacterales species not previously reported in this context. A 33-year-old immunocompetent male presented with …

Antibiograms of pathogenic bacteria isolated from laboratory rabbits in Ibadan, Nigeria.

Antibiotic sensitivity patterns of 21 bacterial isolates from some clinically ill New Zealand rabbits were evaluated against 12 commonly used antibiotics by the Kirby-Bauer disk-diffusion sensitivity testing method. The 21 isolates consisted of six Bordetella bronchiseptica, eight Pasteurella multocida, four Staphylococcus aureus and three Pseudomonas alcaligenes that were associated with snuffles, pneumonia, otitis media, genital infections and conjunctivitis in these groups of caged rabbits. The four bacteria species were all sensitive to kanamycin, gentamycin and enrofloxacin, with variable…

[Epizootics of pasteurellosis in a semi-intensive breeding farm of indigenous rabbits in Senegal].

Epizootic pasteurellosis appeared in a semi-intensive breeding farm (200 animals) of indigenous rabbits in Thiès (ENSA), Senegal, during the 1995 wet season (August to October). It provoked death in 87 animals. Young animals were particularly sensitive to the disease. Nasal discharge, conjunctivitis, eye loss and otitis media and interna were observed in young rabbits while posterior paresis was noted in mature rabbits. Pasteurella multocida, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aerogenes were identified. An antibiogram revealed the germs were sensitive to chloramphenicol, sulfamethoxazole/tr…

Ecology and significance of Pasteurellaceae in man--an update.

Within the last decade new knowledge has emerged concerning the significance of Pasteurellaceae in man; the classification has undergone some changes, and new taxa were described. Haemophilus influenzae serotype b was shown to have a clonal distribution that is related to demographic patterns of the human host. Brazilian purpuric fever is caused by a special clone of Haemophilus aegyptius. H. influenzae biotype IV seems to be a genital pathogen, and may deserve species rank. New Pasteurella species have been described, that occur in well known pathological foci in man, e.g. bite wounds. Toxige

Acute carpal tunnel syndrome of the hand following a cat bite.

Cat bites at the hand are common situation in emergency departments. Neglected or poorly supported, these lesions sometimes lead to serious injuries that may compromise the function of the hand. Pasteurellamultocida is the most offending germ in these lesions, despite their sensitivity to antibiotics; it can sometimes lead to deep infections involving the skin, bones and joints. Acute carpal tunnel syndrome is exceptional after cat bite. We report a case of a 56 Year old female presenting with an acute carpal tunnel syndrome associated with compartment syndrome of the right hand 6 days after a

Phenotype-Specific Semi-Mechanistic Modelling of Florfenicol Time-Kill Curves in G. Parasuis Compared to Other Respiratory Pathogens.

This study examines the pharmacodynamics (PD) of florfenicol (FFN) for treating porcine respiratory diseases by comparing its effects on Glaesserella parasuis, Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae and Pasteurella multocida. In vitro time-kill assays and semi-mechanistic PD modeling were used to assess bacterial growth and killing rates at varying FFN concentrations. Species-specific PD models indicated that fAUC/MIC was the best PK/PD index across all species. A. pleuropneumoniae and P. multocida had target values of 1.05 and 1.66 × MIC, respectively for bacteriostasis and 1.12 and 1.87 × MIC for 9…
