Evidence of multiple paternity in Morelet's Crocodile (Crocodylus moreletii) in Belize, CA, inferred from microsatellite markers.

Microsatellite data were generated from hatchlings collected from ten nests of Morelet's Crocodile (Crocodylus moreletii) from New River Lagoon and Gold Button Lagoon in Belize to test for evidence of multiple paternity. Nine microsatellite loci were genotyped for 188 individuals from the 10 nests, alongside 42 nonhatchlings from Gold Button Lagoon. Then mitochondrial control region sequences were generated for the nonhatchlings and for one individual from each nest to test for presence of C. acutus-like haplotypes. Analyses of five of the nine microsatellite loci revealed evidence that progen

[A case of partial trisomy 9pter --> q13 due to paternal balanced translocation t (9;21) (q13;q21)].

Trisomy 9p is one of the most frequent autosomal anomalies compatible with a long survival rate. Clinical characteristics are craniofacial dysmorphisms including hypertelorism, prominent nose, deepset eyes, and down-slanting palpebral fissures. The degree of clinical severity in trisomy 9 roughly correlates with the extent of trisomic chromosomal material. If the trisomic segments include the long arm of chromosome 9, clinical findings may not fit into the trisomy 9p but rather resemble trisomy 9 mosaic syndrome and are associated with muscular and cardiac anomalies. Therefore, breakpoints as

Association between paternally inherited haplotypes upstream of the insulin gene and umbilical cord IGF-II levels.

The insulin (INS) and IGF 2 (IGF2) genes are in close proximity to each other and undergo maternal imprinting during fetal growth. We investigated the association between maternal and umbilical cord IGF 2 protein (IGF-II) levels and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the INS and IGF2 genes in 207 healthy African-American mother-newborn pairs. No association was found between maternal IGF-II levels and polymorphism in the INS-IGF2 locus. A significant association was found between newborn IGF-II levels and two SNPs (rs3842738 and rs689) at the 5' end of the INS-IGF2 locus. Analyses of ha

Size breeds success: multiple paternity, multivariate selection and male semelparity in a small marsupial, Antechinus stuartii.

Mating in the marsupial genus Antechinus is a synchronous annual event that is characterized by monoestry in females and abrupt postmating mortality in males. Male semelparity (multiple copulations during a single breeding season per lifetime) is often assumed to occur as a consequence of the intense mating effort expended by males in the rut, but the forces selecting for this remain elusive. Here, we investigate selection in male brown antechinus, Antechinus stuartii, and test two hypotheses for the evolution of semelparity: intermale competition and sperm competition. If intermale competitio

Paternal and maternal lineages in the Balkans show a homogeneous landscape over linguistic barriers, except for the isolated Aromuns.

The Balkan Peninsula is a complex cultural mosaic comprising populations speaking languages from several branches of the Indo-European family and Altaic, as well as culturally-defined minorities such as the Aromuns who speak a Romance language. The current cultural and linguistic landscape is a palimpsest in which different peoples have contributed their cultures in a historical succession. We have sought to find any evidence of genetic stratification related to those cultural layers by typing both mtDNA and Y chromosomes, in Albanians, Romanians, Macedonians, Greeks, and five Aromun populatio

Expression of foreign DNA is associated with paternal chromosome degradation in intracytoplasmic sperm injection-mediated transgenesis in the mouse.

The efficiency of intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)-mediated transgenesis is often limited by poor embryo development. Because our previous work indicated that impairment of embryo development is frequently related to chromosomal abnormalities, we hypothesized that foreign DNA and/or conditions used to enhance integration of the DNA might induce chromosome damage. Therefore, we examined the chromosomes of mouse embryos produced by transgenesis with the EGFP gene. Spermatozoa were processed with three methods that cause membrane disruption: freeze-thawing, Triton X-100, or Triton X-100 fo

Discrimination of complete hydatidiform mole from its mimics by immunohistochemistry of the paternally imprinted gene product p57KIP2.

The p57KIP2 protein is a cell cycle inhibitor and tumor suppressor encoded by a strongly paternally imprinted gene. We explored the utility of p57KIP2 as a diagnostic marker in hydatidiform mole, a disease likely the result of abnormal dosage and consequent misexpression of imprinted genes. Using a monoclonal antibody on paraffin-embedded, formalin-fixed tissue sections, the authors evaluated p57KIP2 expression in normal placenta and in 149 gestations including 59 complete hydatidiform moles, 39 PHMs, and 51 spontaneous losses with hydropic changes. p57KIP2 was strongly expressed in cytotropho

Adverse influence of numbers of previous miscarriages on results of paternal lymphocyte immunization in patients with recurrent spontaneous abortions.

PROBLEM: To determine whether an increase in the number of previous miscarriages in recurrent spontaneous abortion patients is a risk factor in subsequent pregnancies with paternal lymphocyte immunotherapy. METHOD OF STUDY: Live birth rates with reference to previous abortion numbers in recurrent spontaneous abortion patients were statistically compared between paternal lymphocyte immunotherapy and control groups, the latter retrospectively researched using historical data before 1981 in our clinic. RESULTS: The overall live birth rate was 73% (169/232) in the immunotherapy group, and 48% (4

The gene responsible for pseudohypoparathyroidism type Ib is paternally imprinted and maps in four unrelated kindreds to chromosome 20q13.3.

Hypocalcemia and hyperphosphatemia caused by parathyroid hormone (PTH)-resistance are the only discernible abnormalities in pseudohypoparathyroidism type Ib (PHP-Ib). Because mutations in the PTH/PTH-related peptide receptor, a plausible candidate gene, had been excluded previously, we conducted a genome-wide search with four PHP-Ib kindreds and established linkage to a small telomeric region on chromosome 20q, which contains the stimulatory G protein gene. We, furthermore, showed that the genetic defect is imprinted paternally and thus is inherited in the same mode as the PTH-resistant hypoca

Childhood cancer and paternal exposure to ionizing radiation: a second report from the Oxford Survey of Childhood Cancers.

Paternal occupational data already collected as part of the Oxford Survey of Childhood Cancers have been reviewed. Information on paternal occupation was available for 14,869 children dying from cancer in England, Wales, and Scotland in the period 1953-81 and for an equal number of matched controls. The importance of fathers working, at any time before or after conception of the survey child, in any of the following occupations was assessed: radiologists (clinical), surgeons and anesthetists, veterinary surgeons, dental surgeons, nuclear industry workers, industrial radiographers. There was no

The effect of paternal smoking on the birthweight of newborns whose mothers did not smoke. Group Health Medical Associates.

We examined the relationship of paternal smoking habits to birthweight in a cohort of infants enrolled at birth (n = 1219). To assess validity of parental smoking reports, cord serum levels of cotinine were measured in 175 newborns. A mean birthweight deficit of 88 g was found in newborns of nonsmoking mothers whose fathers smoked more than 20 cigarettes/day. Only 2 of 138 newborns whose mothers said they were nonsmokers had cotinine levels indicating that their mothers were active smokers. Among infants of nonsmoking mothers, detectability of cotinine in cord blood was significantly correlate

Childhood cancer and paternal exposure to ionizing radiation: preliminary findings from the Oxford Survey of Childhood Cancers.

Paternal occupational data already collected as part of the Oxford Survey of Childhood Cancers have been reviewed. Information on occupations during or before the relevant pregnancy was sought for 15,279 children dying from cancer in England, Wales, and Scotland in the period 1953-81, and for an equal number of matched controls. Estimates were made for paternal exposure to human-made external ionizing radiation in the six months before conception of the survey child--as judged from job histories and dates of birth. Assessments were also made for potential exposure to unsealed sources of radion

Coincidence of paternal 13pYq translocation and maternal increased 13p NOR activity in a child with arthrogryposis and other malformations.

Cytogenetic examination of a boy with congenital multiple arthrogryposis, VSD and dysmorphic facies revealed a probable t(Y; 13)(q?; p1) translocation and three NOR-positive dots on one of the chromosomes 13. The latter variant could be followed in the family of the mother, the 13/Y translocation was found in the relatives of the father. Since all the family members affected by one or the other cytogenetic anomaly were healthy, the abnormal phenotype of the propositus was interpreted as coincidence by chance.

Prenatal diagnosis and fetal pathology of partial trisomy 20P-monosomy 4P resulting from paternal translocation.

Amniocentesis was performed in view of a paternal balanced chromosomal rearrangement t(4;20)(p16;p12), inv(18)(p11q11). The pregnancy was complicated by severe oligohydramnios. The fetal karyotype was unbalanced: 46XX, der(4), t(4;20)(p16;p12), inv(18) (p11q11)pat., thus resulting in partial trisomy 20p and monosomy 4p. In addition, the amniotic fluid alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) became increasingly elevated with gestational age. The pregnancy was terminated at 25 weeks. The fetus presented with typical facial dysmorphic features, unilateral cleft lip and palate, severe renal hypoplasia, consistent

Duplication-deficiency of chromosome 18, resulting from recombination of a paternal pericentric invesion, with a note for genetic counselling.

A fifth case of rec(18) resulting from recombination of a paternal pericentric inversion is described. The propositus' complement includes a chromosome 18 with partial deletion of the long arm, and partial duplication of the short. The recombination risk is evaluated at 5%. The eventuality of deleterious effects of pericentric inversions is discussed.

Additional pedigree supporting the frequent origin of XXYY from consecutive meiotic non-disjunction in paternal gametogenesis.

A 48,XXYY Sardinian patient, born to a 46,XX mother heterozygous for the Gd Mediterranean mutant, and to a 46,XY father hemizygous for the same mutant, was found to have a mosaic distribution of G6PD(+) and G6PD(-) peripheral red blood cells. The most likely interpretation of this finding is that the propositus is an additional example of an XXYY zygote derived from a consecutive meiotic non-disjunction during paternal gametogenesis.

Partial duplication of the long arm of chromosome 5: a case due to balanced paternal translocation and review of the literature.

A partial duplication of the distal segment of the long arm of chromosome 5 (q31 leads to qter) was observed in an infant with congenital malformations and dysmorphic features. The phenotypically normal father had a balanced translocation between the long arm of chromosome 5 and the short arm of chromosome 9: 46,XY,t(5;9)(q31;p24). The clinical and cytogenetic data obtained from six patients with partial duplications of two different long arm segments of chromosome 5 suggest that partial duplication of the distal long arm of chromosome 5 is associated with microcephaly, hypertelorism, epicanth
