A Common Marmoset Model of Mother-Infant Intervention for Breastfeeding Disorders in the Presence of Paternal Inhibition and Maternal Neglect.

Parents' psychological stress during the perinatal and neonatal periods continues to increase in an environment of declining birthrates, aging populations, and shrinking family sizes. The increase in child abuse and neglect cases, most likely by inexperienced and insufficiently knowledgeable parents, necessitates education on childcare and intervention techniques in nursing and midwifery training. In particular, attachment formation early in life between mother and infant is crucial. To accurately teach sensitive and comprehensive information on intervention techniques for mother-child attachm

Paternal low protein diet perturbs inter-generational metabolic homeostasis in a tissue-specific manner in mice.

The underlying mechanisms driving paternally-programmed metabolic disease in offspring remain poorly defined. We fed male C57BL/6 mice either a control normal protein diet (NPD; 18% protein) or an isocaloric low protein diet (LPD; 9% protein) for a minimum of 8 weeks. Using artificial insemination, in combination with vasectomised male mating, we generated offspring using either NPD or LPD sperm but in the presence of NPD or LPD seminal plasma. Offspring from either LPD sperm or seminal fluid display elevated body weight and tissue dyslipidaemia from just 3 weeks of age. These changes become m

Paternal uniparental disomy of chromosome 16 resulting in homozygosity of a GPT2 mutation causes intellectual and developmental disability.

Recessive mutations in glutamate pyruvate transaminase 2 (GPT2) have recently been found to be associated with intellectual and developmental disability (IDD). In this study, we discovered a homozygous missense variant, NM_133443: [c.1172C > T, p. Pro391Leu], of GPT2 on chromosome 16 in a proband diagnosed with IDD through trio whole-exome sequencing (WES). The pathogenicity of the variant was further verified by bioinformatics analysis and functional studies in vitro. This autosomal recessive disease was caused by paternal uniparental disomy (UPD) which was further proven by single nucleotide

Association of paternal cadmium and other heavy metal exposure to birth outcomes using propensity score matching.

BACKGROUND: Human exposure to cadmium has various effects on health, especially on male reproductive organs. Although it is widely known that prenatal maternal cadmium exposure can affect birth outcomes, the effect of paternal exposure to cadmium remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of paternal cadmium exposure on fetal growth by considering maternal cadmium exposure and exposure to other heavy metals, namely mercury and lead. METHODS: The Mothers and Children's Environmental Health (MOCEH) study is a prospective birth cohort study in Korea. Overall, 1313 fami

Paternal age and specific neurological soft signs as reliable and valid neurobiological markers for the diagnosis of patients with schizophrenia.

Advanced parental age at delivery and neurological soft signs (NSS) constitute risk factors for schizophrenia. The aim of the current study was to develop a neurobiological diagnostic index by combining them, and without the contribution of clinical symptomatology. The study sample included 133 patients suffering from schizophrenia according to DSM-IV-TR (77 males and 56 females; aged 33.55 ± 11.22 years old) and 122 normal controls (66 males and 56 females; aged 32.89 ± 9.91 years old). The assessment included the Neurological Evaluation Scale (NES), and a number of scales assessing the clini

The Longitudinal Associations Between Paternal Incarceration and Family Well-Being: Implications for Ethnic/Racial Disparities in Health.

OBJECTIVE: Ethnic/racial minority children in the United States are more likely to experience father loss to incarceration than White children, and limited research has examined the health implications of these ethnic/racial disparities. Telomere length is a biomarker of chronic stress that is predictive of adverse health outcomes. This study examined whether paternal incarceration predicted telomere length shortening among offspring from childhood to adolescence, whether maternal depression mediated the link, and whether ethnicity/race moderated results. METHOD: Research participants include

Paternal retraction of a fragile X allele to normal size, showing normal function over two generations.

The FMR1 premutation (PM:55-199 CGG) is associated with fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome (FXTAS) and when maternally transmitted is at risk of expansion to a hypermethylated full mutation (FM: ≥ 200 CGG) that causes fragile X syndrome (FXS). We describe a maternally transmitted PM (77 CGG) that was passed to a son (103 CGG), and to a daughter (220-1822 CGG), who were affected with FXTAS and FXS, respectively. The male with the PM showed low-level mosaicism for normal size of 30 and 37 CGG. This male had two offspring: one female mosaic for PM and FM (56, 157, >200 CGG) and another w

Prenatal Diagnosis of a Mosaic Paternal Uniparental Disomy for Chromosome 14: A Case Report of Kagami-Ogata Syndrome.

The Kagami-Ogata syndrome (KOS) is a rare imprinting disorder with a distinct clinical phenotype. In KOS, polyhydramnios is associated with a small bell-shaped thorax and coat-hanger ribs. The genetic etiology of KOS includes paternal uniparental disomy 14 [upd(14)pat], epimutations, and microdeletions affecting the maternally derived imprinted region of chromosome 14q32.2. More than 77 cases of KOS have been reported; however, only one mosaic upd(14)pat case has been reported. Here we report a second mosaic upd(14)pat case. The prognosis of upd(14)pat patients is poor because of severe respir

Paternal exercise protects against liver steatosis in the male offspring of mice submitted to high fat diet.

UNLABELLED: Parental lifestyle has been related to alterations in the phenotype of their offspring. Obese sires can induce offspring insulin resistance as well as increase susceptibility to obesity. On the other hand, obese sires submitted to voluntary exercise ameliorate the deleterious metabolic effects on their offspring. However, there are no studies reporting the effect of programmed exercise training of lean sires on offspring metabolism. AIMS: This study aimed to investigate the role of swimming training of sires for 6 weeks on the offspring metabolic phenotype. MAIN METHODS: Male C57

Paternal exposure to recreational drugs before conception and its effect on live-born offspring: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Men of reproductive age increasingly use recreational drugs. While many of these substances may reduce the quantity and quality of sperm, less is known about the effects of these exposures on their offspring. We performed a scoping review to summarize the available literature and identify areas for future research on the outcome of live-born offspring of fathers who were exposed to recreational drugs before conception. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted of the Medline, EMBASE, and Web of Science databases, which included keywords for the following substances: cannabis-rela

Detection of paternal origin of fetal trisomy 21 in a pregnancy with isolated ventriculomegaly but without advanced parental age.

OBJECTIVE: We present detection of paternal origin of fetal trisomy 21 in a pregnancy with isolated ventriculomegaly but without advanced parental age. CASE REPORT: A 29-year-old pregnant woman was admitted to the hospital at 18 weeks of gestation for tocolytic treatment because of irregular uterine contractions. Her husband was 30 years old. The couple had a healthy daughter. Prenatal ultrasound incidentally found isolated ventriculomegaly, and subsequent amniocentesis revealed a karyotype of 47,XX,+21 in 20/20 colonies of cultured amniocytes. The pregnancy was terminated, and the fetus mani

Influence of the AT1 Receptor Antagonists Telmisartan and Losartan on Reproduction and Offspring After Paternal Exposure to Ionizing Radiation.

This study evaluated the repercussions of paternal exposure to radiation on reproduction and offspring in rats, as well as whether treatment with the angiotensin II type 1 (AT1) receptor antagonists telmisartan and losartan has a mitigating effect. Rats were randomly divided into 6 groups: control, radiation, telmisartan, losartan, radiation + telmisartan, and radiation + losartan. A single 5 Gy dose of radiation was administered directly into the scrotum, followed by treatment with telmisartan (12 mg/kg/d) or losartan (34 mg/kg/2 times per day) for 60 days in the groups receiving these medica

Maternal and Paternal Caffeine Intake and ART Outcomes in Couples Referring to an Italian Fertility Clinic: A Prospective Cohort.

Caffeine intake, a frequent lifestyle exposure, has a number of biological effects. We designed a cohort study to investigate the relation between lifestyle and assisted reproduction technique (ART) outcomes. From September 2014 to December 2016, 339 subfertile couples referring to an Italian fertility clinic and eligible for ART procedures were enrolled in our study. Sociodemographic characteristics, smoking, and usual alcohol and caffeine consumption in the year prior to ART were recorded. The mean age of participants was 36.6 ± 3.6 years in women and 39.4 ± 5.2 years in men. After oocytes r

Hybridity has a greater effect than paternal genome dosage on heterosis in sugar beet (Beta vulgaris).

BACKGROUND: The phenomenon of heterosis is critical to plant breeding and agricultural productivity. Heterosis occurs when F1 hybrid offspring display quantitative improvements in traits to levels that do not occur in the parents. Increasing the genome dosage (i.e. ploidy level) of F1 offspring can contribute to heterosis effects. Sugar beet (Beta vulgaris) provides a model for investigating the relative effects of genetic hybridity and genome dosage on heterosis. Sugar beet lines of different ploidy levels were crossed to generate diploid and triploid F1 offspring to investigate the effect of

Paternal allelic mutation at the Kcnq1 locus reduces pancreatic β-cell mass by epigenetic modification of Cdkn1c.

Genetic factors are important determinants of the onset and progression of diabetes mellitus. Numerous susceptibility genes for type 2 diabetes, including potassium voltage-gated channel, KQT-like subfamily Q, member1 (KCNQ1), have been identified in humans by genome-wide analyses and other studies. Experiments with genetically modified mice have also implicated various genes in the pathogenesis of diabetes. However, the possible effects of the parent of origin for diabetes susceptibility alleles on disease onset have remained unclear. Here, we show that a mutation at the Kcnq1 locus reduces p

Partial monosomy 2p and partial trisomy 4q due to paternal translocation t(2;4)(p25.1;q31.3).

Clinical features in patients with segmental aneuploidy often vary depending on the size of the chromosomal segment involved. Monosomy 2p is usually observed as a part of more complex syndromes among probands of balanced reciprocal translocation carriers. Patients with dup4q syndrome have variable clinical features, which are both related to the size of duplicated segment of the 4q and specific associated monosomy. Clinical findings of our patient were compatible with those previously reported in dup4q and del2p patients. Herein are presented the clinical and cytogenetic findings in a 4-year-o

Paternal postnatal depressive symptoms, infant sleeping and feeding behaviors, and rigid parental regulation: a correlational study.

Paternal postnatal depression (PND) is now recognized as a serious and prevalent problem, associated with poorer well-being and functioning of all family members. Aspects of infant temperament, sleeping and feeding perceived by parents as problematic are associated with maternal PND, however, less is known about paternal PND. This study investigated depressive symptoms (Edinburgh postnatal depression scale (EPDS)) in 219 fathers of infants aged from 1 to 24 weeks (median 7.0 weeks). Infant predictor variables were sleeping problems, feeding problems and both mother and father reported temperam
