Ha(La)-antibodies are detected by counterimmunoelectrophoresis (CIE) in sera of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients, but not in sera of patients with progressive systemic scleroderma (PSS) (n = 38), rheumatoid arthritis (n = 91), ankylosing spondylitis (n = 97), and other rheumatic diseases (n = 452). The authors emphasize the usefulness of dacryography to approach patients affected by epiphora. Digital dacryocystography had improved the anatomic and functional assessment of lacrimal apparatus. The methodology allowed in all patients an accurate visualization of the lacrimal system and the identification, in twenty cases, of pathological causes of epiphora. One patient was examined after dacryocystorinostomy. Digital dacryocystography is a very valuable technique for better contrast resolution, the subtraction of images, and continuous acquisition.

Patients with liver cirrhosis bear a considerable risk of a variety of complications that involve virtually all organ systems. They can be addressed with a wide spectrum of drugs for acute interventions as well as for prophylactic purposes. Two cases of disseminated systemic zygomycosis caused by Cunninghamella bertholletiae in compromised persons were studied. The underlying disease in one patient was hematopoietic dysplasia (preleukemic syndrome) and in the other, postnecrotic hepatic cirrhosis. A definitive diagnosis of zygomycosis caused by C bertholletiae is achieved only by isolation and identification of the fungus and by demonstration of tissue invasion.

BACKGROUND: Prototheca algaemia is a rare but life-threatening disease that occurs primarily in immunocompromised patients. We report a fatal case of Prototheca zopfii bloodstream infection in a 54-year-old woman receiving chemotherapy for relapsed acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
METHODS: The isolate was identified using an automated biochemical identification system (VITEK 2; bioMerieux) and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (VITEK MS; bioMerieux). Partial 18S and 28S rDNA sequencing was performed for definitive identification and genotyping.
