Building and Boosting Capitals for Health Care Access: A Qualitative Study of Homeless Health Peer Advocacy in London, UK.

Peer support is widely promoted as enabling health care access with people experiencing homelessness, including through enabling independence, empowering individuals and managing stigma. However, there is little understanding of these processes, including how they relate to the wide range of potential activities involved in peer support. We studied peer support within a peer advocacy service at a charity run by and for people experiencing homelessness in London, UK. We report analysis from a sub-set of qualitative interviews and focus groups gathered for a qualitative study of peer advocacy. W

Typologies of Social Support and Associations with Mental Health Outcomes Among LGBT Youth.

PURPOSE: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth show increased risk for a number of negative mental health outcomes, which research has linked to minority stressors such as victimization. Further, social support promotes positive mental health outcomes for LGBT youth, and different sources of social support show differential relationships with mental health outcomes. However, little is known about how combinations of different sources of support impact mental health. METHODS: In the present study, we identify clusters of family, peer, and significant other social support and the

A structural equation model of posttraumatic growth after prostate cancer.

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic growth (PTG) encompasses an individual's perception of positive personal changes as a consequence of a traumatic incident. The current study tested a theoretical model of PTG with the inclusion of resilience in the context of cancer survivors. METHODS: Members of a prostate cancer support network were invited to complete a cross-sectional mail survey (N = 514, 52.8% response; mean age 70.17 years, and time since diagnosis 7.5 years). RESULTS: Challenge appraisal (β = 0.361), examining core beliefs (β = 0.474), intrusive rumination (β = 0.130), and peer support facto

More than just a place to talk: young people's experiences of group psychological therapy as an early intervention for auditory hallucinations.

OBJECTIVES: Auditory hallucinations are extremely distressing, particularly when occurring during adolescence. They may be most responsive to psychological intervention during a three-year critical period following symptom-onset, but as yet no studies have investigated voices groups for young participants with adolescent-onset psychosis. The aim of the current study is to explore the experience of group-CBT amongst a group of young people experiencing distressing auditory hallucinations. DESIGN: This project was planned and conducted in the tradition of idiographic, qualitative psychology. A

Adapting an Osteoarthritis Peer Mentorship Intervention for Remote Delivery to People Experiencing Socioeconomic Disadvantage: A Multi-Method Approach.

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common musculoskeletal condition which can cause debilitating pain and other symptoms. OA is more prevalent, and the impact is greater, among people experiencing socioeconomic disadvantage. While peer support is a recommended strategy for addressing these health inequalities, evidence in this area is limited. We previously developed and feasibility tested an in-person OA peer mentorship intervention in a group with limited diversity. This study adapted the intervention for remote delivery to people experiencing socioeconomic disadvantage. METHODS: This mul

Participant and group facilitator perspectives on a novel culturally tailored diabetes self-management program for African Americans.

BACKGROUND: African Americans with type 2 diabetes experience disparities in their care and diabetes health-related outcomes. Diabetes self-management programs such as Healthy Living with Diabetes (HLWD) are important but do not account for the unique cultural experiences of African Americans. Also, a culturally tailored program focused on addressing sociocultural beliefs and providing race-congruent peer support, Peers LEAD (Peers Supporting Health Literacy, Self-Efficacy, Self-Advocacy, and Adherence) was implemented in two midwestern cities to improve medication adherence but does not inclu

Development of a novel motivational interviewing (MI) informed peer-support intervention to support mothers to breastfeed for longer.

BACKGROUND: Many women in the UK stop breastfeeding before they would like to, and earlier than is recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). Given the potential health benefits for mother and baby, new ways of supporting women to breastfeed for longer are required. The purpose of this study was to develop and characterise a novel Motivational Interviewing (MI) informed breastfeeding peer-support intervention. METHODS: Qualitative interviews with health professionals and service providers (n = 14), and focus groups with mothers (n = 14), fathers (n = 3), and breastfeeding peer-suppor

The effects of creative drama activities on preschoolers' peer relationships and humor skills and the predictive role of humor.

INTRODUCTION: Peer relationships and humor skills may be important for the social-emotional skills of preschool-aged children. Creative drama activities offer opportunities for role-playing, social interaction, and self-expression through imagination, which can support the development of these skills. However, studies examining peer relationships and humor skills together within a creative drama framework remain limited. This study aimed to investigate the effects of creative drama activities on preschool children's peer relationships and humor skills and to examine the predictive role of humo

Behavioral and functional connectivity basis for peer-influenced bystander participation in bullying.

Recent studies have shown that the reactions of bystanders who witness bullying significantly affect whether the bullying persists. However, the underlying behavioral and neural mechanisms that determine a peer-influenced bystander's participation in bullying remain largely unknown. Here, we designed a new 'catch-ball' task where four players choose to throw a sequence of normal or strong (aggressive) balls in turn and examined whether the players (n = 43) participated in other players' bullying. We analyzed behaviors with a computational model that quantifies the tendencies of a participant's

Improving health, wellbeing and parenting skills in parents of children with special health care needs and medical complexity - a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Parenting children with special health care needs can be challenging particularly if children have complex conditions. Parents may struggle to manage their child's health and their own emotions, contributing to poorer health outcomes for the family. Frequent healthcare contact presents opportunities to intervene, but current evidence review is limited. This review scopes and synthesizes interventions to improve health, wellbeing and parenting skills. METHODS: Using formal scoping review methodology MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, CINAHL, The Cochrane Library, ERIC, ASSIA, HMIC and Open

Peer Relationships and Social Media Use in Adolescents with Body Dysmorphic Disorder.

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a common and debilitating disorder in adolescents, yet there is little research on the disorder in young people. The current study aimed to investigate peer relationship factors in 26 adolescents (aged 12 to 17 years) with BDD, compared to 27 adolescents with anxiety disorders and 25 adolescents without mental disorders. Participants completed self-report measures on peer appearance and general victimisation, peer support, appearance co-rumination and social media use. Adolescents with BDD and anxiety disorders perceived significantly less peer support than ad

Cardiovascular risk reduction through a peer-led digital health lifestyle intervention in a low-income community: outcomes from the MYCardio-PEER program.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Low-income communities face a disproportionately high burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD), yet often lack access to preventive care. Peer-based interventions delivered through digital platforms offer a potentially scalable approach to address these disparities, but evidence remains limited. Our study evaluated the preliminary impact of an 8-week peer-led digital health lifestyle intervention (MYCardio-PEER) in improving knowledge, lifestyle behaviours and biomarkers related to cardiovascular health among a low-income population. METHODS AND RESULTS: Adults from the low
