Background: Data about psychosocial sequelae of childhood Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT) are limited and the association with a specific donor type or other medical factors is largely unknown (Chang et al., 2012). The aim of the present study was to compare the psychological aspects of pediatric HSCT survivors with healthy peers. A secondary aim was to detect whether parents and children differed in the perception of mental health status. The influence of medical factors on psychological status was also examined. Method: Thirty seven HSCT survivors (23 males) with a mean age of

BACKGROUND: Low rates of maternal healthcare service utilization, including facility delivery, may impede progress in the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT) and in reducing maternal and infant mortality. The MoMent (Mother Mentor) study investigated the impact of structured peer support on early infant diagnosis presentation and postpartum maternal retention in PMTCT care in rural Nigeria. This paper describes baseline characteristics and correlates of facility delivery among MoMent study participants.
METHODS: HIV-positive pregnant women were recruited at 20 rural Prim

BACKGROUND: syncope and falls are common symptoms in older adults. Dedicated facilities for these symptoms are emerging in the UK. To date, justification for resource allocation for these day case facilities is lacking. A dedicated syncope and falls day case facility for older adults was set up in Newcastle in 1991 (at the Royal Victoria Infirmary). The facility provided rapid access for assessment of appropriate patients from the community, the accident and emergency department, or emergency admissions. Activity and performance in 1999 were compared with peer inner-city teaching hospitals and

PURPOSE: Research shows the potential for post-traumatic growth (PTG) following spinal cord injury (SCI). Growing evidence demonstrates the role of social processes in PTG development. However, the mechanisms through which social processes might influence PTG are not well established. The review aimed to synthesise current research to provide insights into social processes involved in PTG development following SCI.
METHODS: Searches were conducted using the following databases: PsycINFO, MEDLINE, Scopus, Citation Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Web of Science, and EMBASE. Nine

HIV-related stigma has a significant impact on healthcare engagement and disclosure practices among people living with HIV (PLWH). Although stigma's detrimental effects are documented, few studies explore how intersecting stigmas within clinical and social domains collectively shape these behaviors. In this U.S.-based study, qualitative methods are used to examine how intersectional stigma influences healthcare engagement and selective HIV status disclosure among Black PLWH. An integrated theoretical framework combining intersectionality, socio-ecological models, and health belief models guide

INTRODUCTION: Breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) is a treatment sequela with negative physical and psychological implications. BCRL is a lifetime concern for survivors and is currently incurable. With the increase in the Latino population in the United States, it is critical for the cancer care community to address factors that increase BCRL risk and negatively impact long-term quality of life. This literature review undertook to identify successful intervention strategies for BCRL among Latina survivors.
METHODS: Multiple databases were searched for published articles from 2006 to 2020.

Deliberate tanning, poor sun protection and sun exposure increase an individual's risk for skin cancer. Recent evidence suggests that individuals of Asian heritage have lower incidence of skin cancer than Caucasians but that their post-diagnosis outcomes are often worse. In Western cultures tanning behaviours are often motivated by a desire for 'attractive' tanned skin. Conversely, a light complexion is desired in a number of Asian cultures and may consequently serve to protect this group from excessive and risky sun exposure behaviours. This possibility is yet to be tested, with little known

OBJECTIVE: Suicide prevention professionals and programs have focused on reaching not only individuals with suicide ideation, but also family, friends, and other acquaintances, referred to as suicide gatekeepers. Social media provide platforms that allow health communicators to reach a large population. This research focuses on examining and testing the most effective message framing (how the message provides a reward or consequence for the receiver) and message construct (precise focus and wording of a message) for social media posts intended to positively influence suicide gatekeeper interve

BACKGROUND: University students frequently engage in health-risk behaviours that may affect academic engagement, wellbeing, and campus experiences. Quantitative studies dominate the literature, leaving limited qualitative insight into how students in specific African university settings understand these behaviours and the contexts in which they occur.
METHODS: A single-site descriptive qualitative case study was conducted at a university in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. Fifteen students aged 19-25 years participated in semi-structured telephone interviews. Five institutional documents provided suppleme

The monkeypox (Mpox) disproportionately impacted gay and bisexual men (GBM), particularly Black and Latino communities, yet limited research has examined how these populations understood and navigated Mpox-related information and care during the outbreak. This qualitative study explored health communication, trust, and structural factors influencing Mpox knowledge and health care engagement among Black and Latino GBM. Between November 2023 and May 2024, we conducted 30 semi-structured interviews with Black and Latino GBM recruited from a clinic-based sample in San Diego, California. Interviews

BACKGROUND: Receiving a stoma significantly impacts patients' quality of life. Coping with this new situation can be difficult, which may result in a variety of physical and psychosocial problems. It is essential to provide adequate guidance to help patients cope with their stoma, as this positively influences self-efficacy in return. Higher self-efficacy reduces psychosocial problems increasing patient's quality of life. This study investigates whether a new mobile application, the Stoma App, improves quality of life. And if personalized guidance, timed support, and peer contact offered as an

Adolescent sexual violence (SV), which includes non-contact verbal sexual harassment (SH) and forced sexual contact (FSC), is a significant public health problem with long-term impacts on health and well-being. Understanding how sports participation is linked to SV can inform prevention efforts; however, the current literature is unclear about the nature of this association. Using data from 20 high schools, we investigate whether athletes in certain sports are at higher risk of SH and FSC perpetration than either other athletes or sports non-participants, and whether the risk is moderated by g

The current study filled significant gaps in our knowledge of developmental psychopathology by examining the influence of multilevel risk factors and developmental assets on longitudinal trajectories of internalizing symptoms and self-esteem in an exceptionally culturally diverse sample of rural adolescents. Integrating ecological and social capital theories, we explored if positive microsystem transactions are associated with self-esteem while negative microsystem transactions increase the chances of internalizing problems. Data came from the Rural Adaptation Project, a 5-year longitudinal pa

Children with language and speech disorders account for approximately 5%-12% of children have language and speech disorders globally. Understanding the cognitive abilities of these children is crucial for identifying how cognitive skills influence speech fluency, language production, and planning effective intervention programs. Subtle differences in cognitive performance have been noted to affect developmental language skills. Therefore, we aimed to compare the cognitive abilities of children with language impairments and stuttering to typically developing controls. Our study was conducted on

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a significant risk factor for subsequent suicidal ideation, suicidal behavior, and psychological disorders. This meta-analysis of published prospective studies has examined the longitudinal predictors of NSSI drawing on 18 published reports and 23,737 independent participants. The random effects model showed that the overall prediction of NSSI was significant (OR = 1.18, 95%CI[1.08-1.28]). These factors, which include depressive symptoms (OR = 1.21, 95%CI[1.10-1.33]), prior history of NSSI (OR = 2.34, 95%CI[1.66,3.29]), being female (OR = 1.59, 95%CI[1.01,2.5
