Periodontitis, a chronic inflammatory disease causing alveolar bone loss which significantly affects oral health and quality of life. Accurate assessment of bone loss severity and pattern is critical for diagnosis and treatment planning. In this study, we propose a novel AI-based deep learning framework to automatically detect and quantify alveolar bone loss and its patterns using intraoral periapical (IOPA) radiographs. Our method combines YOLOv8 for tooth detection with Keypoint R-CNN models to identify anatomical landmarks, enabling precise calculation of bone loss severity. Additionally, Y

This study investigated whether teaching undergraduate dental students the diagnosis and management of acute dental pain alongside the underpinning oral physiology helped them to understand the topic better than teaching them acute dental pain as a separate entity. Each of three clinical years of dental students at the same dental school was taught in two groups. Each group was taught the signs/symptoms of five acute dental pain conditions by the same member of the staff. However, the teaching for one group of students in each year reminded the students about the physiology that underpinned th

BACKGROUND: Chronic apical periodontitis (CAP) remains among the most challenging endodontic conditions due to persistent infection and inflammatory destruction in the periapical region. In contemporary endodontic terminology (AAE 2015), CAP typically corresponds to apical periodontitis with radiographic apical radiolucency, which may present with or without symptoms.
OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates the effect of a novel bioceramic sealer, iRoot SP, on periodontal clinical parameters and masticatory function in patients with chronic apical periodontitis (CAP) compared with the traditional AH-

The significance of artificial intelligence (AI) in several facets of dental care is highlighted in this paper. These days, AI is becoming more widely accepted and significant in many industries, notably in dentistry. The development of Chat Generative Pre-training Transformer shows how far AI has already come in a relatively brief span of time, especially when we take into account that John McCarthy initially created this field of computer-aided training in 1956. AI has been demonstrated to have a variety of applications in dentistry. AI is being used in a variety of fields, including endodon

Tooth resorption; both internal and external, occasionally occurs as an inflammatory response of the dentoalveolar apparatus to infection. Depending on the type of resorption, etiology, and the stage at which root resorption defect is detected, different treatment regimens have been proposed. This case report demonstrates the management of extensive inflammatory combined internal and external root resorption by nonsurgical endodontic therapy using a Bioceramic sealer (BioRoot RCS) and surgical reconstruction of resorptive defect using Biodentine. On follow-up at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months, clinica

Diagnosis of pulpal disease can be difficult due to the lack of diagnostic signs and symptoms available to the practitioner. An understanding of the possible underlying pathological processes, combined with an exact assessment of the pain history, and appropriate clinical tests, should aid the practitioner in determining the nature of pulpal inflammation, and differentiating it from dentine sensitivity and cracked teeth. The responses of the pulp to traumatic injury to the periodontal membrane (PDM) require special consideration, particularly with respect to the assessment of pulp vitality, an

We investigated the relationship between molar root fusion and localized periodontitis in this study. A total of 143 individuals (1,109 molars) aged 23 to 68 years were examined for the presence of molar root fusion at diseased and healthy sites. Molar root fusions were diagnosed by periapical radiographs and clinical probing. Periodontal parameters measured included probing depth (PD), clinical attachment loss (CAL), gingival index (GI), and plaque index (PLI) around fused molars. Results indicated that the prevalence of molar root fusions in males and females was 15.2% (93/612) and 32.2% (16

A case of fanconi's anemia was referred to the Dental School from the Department of Pediatrics. The patient was a 24-year-old male and a product of a consanguineous marriage. His chief complaint was loose and falling teeth, which has started at the age of 16 years. The first teeth to fall out were the first permanent molars followed by mandibular and maxillary anteriors. General examination showed that the patient was of normal intelligence and small for his age. He had no palmar plantar hyperkeratosis and was not diabetic. A total of 19 teeth remained in the mouth, most of them with grade thr

INTRODUCTION: Although several elegant studies have reported apical periodontitis prevalence in different populations, far less is known about its associated bone loss and its correlation to sex and age. Thus, this study investigated the impact of sex and age differences on the severity of apical periodontitis (AP) using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and a volumetric periapical index (CBCT-PAI).
METHODS: CBCT scans of 401 patients (1,027 teeth) were analyzed by calibrated examiners in CBCT-PAI. Chi-square tests were used to assess associations between AP, sex, and age with other variab

Museum skull specimens from 224 Arctic foxes (Vulpes lagopus) were examined macroscopically using an established protocol for examination of mammalian skull specimens. Foxes were collected from coastal and island regions of Alaska, USA, except for two individuals. Collection years ranged from 1931 to 2016 with most specimens collected during the 1950s and 1960s. The study population comprised more females (n = 134, 59.8%) than males (n = 83, 37.0%) and individuals of unknown sex (n = 7, 3.1%). There were 108 (48.2%) young adults, 115 (51.3%) adults, and one (0.4%) individual of unknown age. A

Apical periodontitis (AP), an inflammatory lesion around the apex of tooth roots, is mostly caused by dental pulp infection. Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) plays a vital role in regulating cholesterol homeostasis by targeting low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) and participates in bacterium-induced chronic periodontitis. However, the roles of PCSK9 in AP are unknown. Here, we investigated its role in AP by using Pcsk9-/- mice. Micro-computed tomography scanning and histological staining revealed that the periapical bone loss of Pcsk9-/- mice was greater than that of

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a common metabolic disorder, and persistent hyperglycemia may impair oral health through various immunological and inflammatory mechanisms, particularly by influencing the onset and healing of apical periodontitis (AP). This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate whether poor glycemic control (PGC) is associated with the presence and progression of AP.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. A comprehensive search of PubMed, Embase, Google Scholar, and Scopus was performed to identify re

The European Society of Endodontology (ESE) published quality guidelines in 2006; however, they had not been revised since. In line with a state-of the art guideline process, the first S3-level clinical practice guideline (CPG) in endodontics was published by the ESE in 2023. The aim was to systemically develop, using a rigorous validated methodology, an S3-level guideline for the management of endodontic disease which concentrated on diagnosis and the therapeutic approaches required to deal with patients with pulpitis and apical periodontitis. Methodologically, this ESE CPG was developed with
