The effect of muscle immobility, with and without prior vigorous exercise, on amplitude and area of the compound muscle action potential (CMAP) to supramaximal nerve stimulation was studied in a family with hyperkalemic periodic paralysis. Amplitude and area of different CMAPs were measured during basal state, sustained immobility, and after brief maximal voluntary exercise of these muscles. Sustained immobility reduced the amplitude and area of the CMAP, with maximal effect occurring after 30 minutes. Though brief intense exercise seemed to minimally accentuate these effects of subsequent imm

The case of a 42-year-old man is reported, who on four occasions developed a hypokalaemic periodic paralysis after an intramuscular injection of "Ambene". The detailed examination of this patient shows, that it is the primary, autosomal dominant inherited form of hypokalaemic periodic paralysis, and not the secondary form, which is caused by a renal or gastrointestinal loss of potassium. Clinical and electrophysiological, as well as histopathological and electron microscopic findings are presented, showing the typical vacuolar myopathy with submicroscopic tubular structures. In the literature

The prevalence of thyroid disease was investigated in 460 Caucasian women after delivery. Thyroid microsomal antibodies (MsAb) were found in 44 (9.6%) of the women. These women appeared to have autoimmune thyroiditis. The changes in MsAb titers followed a predictable pattern with maximal values around 5-7 months postpartum. At this time 20 of these women had transient hypothyroidism and in some this was preceded by a thyrotoxic episode. The extent of postpartum hypothyroidism correlated well with the titers of MsAb in early pregnancy and in the postpartum period. Transient thyrotoxicosis occur

Out of six patients with hyperkaliemic periodic paralysis observed by the authors, two reported the sensation of the odor of ammonium hydroxide at the moment of paralysis. The study of the ammonia concentration in the venous blood of the patients at the moment of myoplegia attacks showed its sharp increase. The elevated content of ammonia in the blood and the exhaled air responsible for the above olfactory phenomenon is associated with the compromised ammonia clearance by the kidneys due to hyperkaliemia .

The present study takes into consideration some of the symptoms comprised in the Periodic Syndrome. These include motion-sickness, cyclic vomiting, recurrent abdominal pains and paroxysmal vertigo. Particular consideration is given to the chronological and long-term aspects of such symptoms. Among 247 migraine sufferers in the pediatric age group, 173 subjects who complained of at least one of these symptoms were chosen. Results of the data show that motion-sickness is the first to manifest itself (mean age of onset 2 years), and has a tendency to continue into the headache period; cyclic vomi

Periodic breathing is common in normal infants, but may be associated with prolonged apnea leading to crib death. The mechanisms of periodic breathing and its relation to normal breathing patterns are unclear. We recorded respiratory and heart rate (HR) patterns of 11 healthy newborn infants during quiet sleep, in both normal and periodic breathing. Spectral analysis of the respiratory pattern revealed a low-frequency (LF) periodicity in normal breathing approximately equal to the frequency of periodic breathing when this occurs. Periodic breathing thus appears to be an exaggeration of an unde…

Gestation continued for 324 days in a cow pregnant for the fourth time. This extreme prolongation could be due to congenital abnormality in the calf consisting in aplasia of the pituitary and anencephaly.

A thyrotoxic patient who initially presented with periodic paralysis is described. Precipitation of an attack by a high carbohydrate diet was associated with only a modest fall in plasma potassium but with a marked rise in total blood cell potassium.

A 30-year-old woman had scleroderma, Sjögren's syndrome, deforming polyarthritis, distal renal tubular acidosis, hypokalemic periodic paralysis, and persistent mild myopathy. During a five-year period the patient's otherwise mild course of disease was complicated by the occurrence of five episodes of severe flaccid muscle paralysis involving both proximal and distal muscle groups. Between the paralytic episodes the patient functioned well without replacement therapy, and had normal potassium levels. The sicca component was mild and went unrecognized for several years. There was no family histo
