Understanding the relationship between personality pathology and attachment style in the context of the DSM-5 Alternative Model of Personality Disorders.

This study utilizes the two different criteria of the DSM-5 Alternative Model of Personality Disorder Assessment to evaluate the relationship between attachment style and personality pathology. One-hundred forty patients from a combined sample of psychiatric and internal medicine clinics were given a survey composed of the DSM-5 Levels of Personality Functioning Questionnaire (DLOPFQ), the Personality Inventory for DSM-5-Brief Form (PID-5-BF), and the Relationship Questionnaire (RQ). Analysis of variance indicated that attachment styles were differentiated across all four the DLOPFQ scales and…

The roles of personality traits and close social contact in the expression of momentary borderline personality disorder symptoms in daily life.

Dimensional models of personality, such as the five-factor model (FFM), have demonstrated strong coherence with the presentation of personality disorders, including borderline personality disorder (BPD). Given that select personality trait elevations have been linked to impairments in multiple life domains across diagnostic groups, we sought to replicate findings from a previous investigation of the utility of the FFM in predicting BPD-relevant outcomes (i.e., negative affect intensity and instability, impulsivity, and interpersonal disagreements) in the daily lives of those with BPD (Hepp et …

[Assessment of pathological personality traits and gender characteristics by Personality Inventory for DSM-5 in a psychiatric and a normal sample].

INTRODUCTION: The DSM-5 describes two types of classification of personality disorders: a categorical and a dimensional classification. The alternative model of personality disorders in the DSM-5 determines new diagnostic criteria for personality disorders with a criterion B describing the presence of pathological personality facets. For the assessment of these domains and facets, the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5) was created. METHODS: A sample of patients receiving psychiatric care (n=239) and a normal sample (n=226) were involved in the study. The two samples did not differ signif…

The Endocannabinoid System, Aggression, and the Violence of Synthetic Cannabinoid Use, Borderline Personality Disorder, Antisocial Personality Disorder, and Other Psychiatric Disorders.

Endogenous and exogenous cannabinoids bind to central cannabinoid receptors to control a multitude of behavioral functions, including aggres … psychotic and affective disorders, as well as clinically aggressive populations, such as borderline personality disorder and antisocial personality disorder. With regard to the former condition, decreased anandamide metabolites have been reported in the cerebrospinal fluid, while some preliminary evidence suggests that fatty acid amide hydrolase genetic polym …

Comorbidity of borderline personality disorder with other personality disorders in psychiatric outpatients: how does it look at 2-year follow-up?

BACKGROUND: The rates of remission of comorbid personality disorders for patients with a primary borderline personality disorder (BPD) have previously only been addressed in samples of inpatients or former inpatients with BPD receiving treatment-as-usual. AIMS: The aim of the current study was to assess the rates of remission of comorbid axis II personality disorders in a sample of 32 outpatients with a primary BPD receiving open-ended non-manualized psychotherapy. METHODS: Structured psychiatric interviews for DSM-IV were conducted by independent assessors at intake, discharge and 2-year fo…

Sexually transmitted disease rates and high-risk sexual behaviors in borderline personality disorder versus borderline personality disorder with substance use disorder.

We examined the rates of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in women with borderline personality disorder (BPD) (using PDE and SCID-II) and substance abuse or dependence (SCID-I) (BPD-SUD) (N=82) compared with those with BPD-only (N=102), exploring mediators of this relationship. Participants were interviewed about STD history (gonorrhea, genital herpes, syphilis, trichomonas, human papillomavirus, and HIV), condom use, number of sexual partners, poverty, and prostitution. BPD-SUD appeared to be particularly at high risk for STDs, reporting significantly more STDs than BPD (F[1,172]=11.74, p…

Development of an integrated model of personality, personality disorders and severe axis I disorders, with special reference to major affective disorders.

A unidimensional model of the relationships between normal temperament, psychopathic variants of it and the two main forms of so-called endogenous psychoses (major affective disorders and schizophrenia) was derived from Kretschmer's constitutional typology. It was, however, not confirmed by means of a biometric approach nor was Kretschmer's broad concept of cyclothymia as a correlate of physical stoutness on the one hand and major affective disorders on the other supported by empirical data. Yet the concept of the 'melancholic type' of personality of patients with severe unipolar major depress…

Personality and cognitive resilience to accelerated epigenetic aging.

Personality traits are associated with cognitive resilience to dementia-related neuropathology. This study examines whether personality traits are related to cognitive resilience to accelerated epigenetic aging. Participants were adults aged from 50 to 98 years (N = 2926, 58% female, Mean age = 68.72, SD = 9.57) from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS). Data on cognition and epigenetic aging measures (GrimAge and DunedinPoAM38) were obtained in 2016. Data on personality, demographic factors, and clinical, behavioral, and psychological covariates were obtained in 2014/2016. Cognitive resilien…

Personality, Performance, and Corticosterone in White-Footed Mice.

AbstractPrevious small rodent studies report a negative correlation between exploration and locomotor performance. In other words, individuals that are more exploratory during a novel environment test run more slowly on a racetrack during a forced-exercise test. Given that measuring both exploration and sprint speed involves stress (novelty, open space, stimuli to prompt running), glucocorticoid hormones may play a role in the negative exploration-speed relationship. We repeatedly measured exploration, sprint speed, and blood corticosterone levels in 51 captive female white-footed mice. As in

Sexual hallucinations and delusions in borderline personality disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual hallucinations have lifetime prevalence rates of 0.4% in the general population and up to 44% in schizophrenia spectrum disorders. For borderline personality disorder (BPD) these rates are unknown. We therefore studied prevalence rates of sexual hallucinations and delusions in this group, as well as their phenomenological characteristics and their connection with childhood trauma. METHODS: We carried out a cross-sectional study among outpatients with BPD, using the Sexual Hallucinations and Delusions Questionnaire (SHDQ), the Psychotic Symptom Rating Scales-Auditory Verba…

Personality and cortical architecture in premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

PURPOSE: Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) has been associated with altered grey matter architecture in a trait-like manner. Personality traits, shaped largely by genetics and linked to depressive disorders, may relate to structural properties of the brain and could represent a potential factor mediating vulnerability for PMDD. However, these possible associations remain largely unexplored. METHODS: The present study assessed personality traits in participants with PMDD and healthy controls, as well as how personality is related to symptom severity and cortical surface measures in PMDD. H…

Promising experimental drugs for obsessive-compulsive personality disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) is a common psychopathological condition that generally causes a significant maladjustment in affected individuals. Despite its prevalence, there are no univocal and defined guidelines for the treatment of this condition, and the literature evidence on this topic is scant and controversial. AREAS COVERED: This narrative review synthesizes clinical trials, case reports, and experimental proposals for OCPD treatment in the light of the most recent neurobiological models. We aimed to review current therapeutic evidence for the disord…

Mentalization-based therapy for personality disorder in adolescents.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Mentalization-based therapy for adolescents (MBT-A) is a treatment approach that aligns well with dimensional models of personality disorders. This article reviews recent literature on mentalizing and MBT, proposing ways in which findings may inform future research and clinical innovations. RECENT FINDINGS: There have been few new treatment studies and meta-analyses, and the evidence generally does not support the superiority of MBT-A over other well structured treatments for personality disorder in adolescents. Long-term follow-up studies suggest heterotypic continuity of …

Psychometric Evaluation of the Borderline Personality Disorder Checklist.

BACKGROUND: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a severe and disabling condition. The Borderline Personality Disorder Checklist (BPDCL) was designed to specifically assess the subjective burden of a patient due to BPD symptoms. Various translations have been developed, but an assessment of the psychometric properties of these translations is needed. The aim was to examine the psychometric qualities of the BPDCL across different languages (i.e., Italian, Dutch, German, Spanish, English, and Greek). METHODS: Secondary data was used by reaching out to various researchers, who administered t…

Borderline Personality Symptoms, Body Modification, and Emotional Regulation.

Many people with BPD (borderline personality disorder) experience emotional dysregulation and thus engage in NSSI (non-suicidal self-injury), potentially in the pursuit of emotional regulation. However, research is lacking on whether body modifications (piercings, tattoos, etc.) are linked to BPD in a similar way to NSSI. In the current study, we hypothesized (1) that body modifications are associated with BPD symptoms, (2) that emotional regulation and self-expression motivations for body modifications specifically account for variance in BPD symptoms, and (3) that NSSI craving correlates wit…

Resilience in borderline personality disorder: a scoping review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review summarizes current research on resilience in individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD), its role in the development of BPD, and its impact on symptoms and recovery. Low resilience is considered a key factor contributing to emotional dysregulation and difficulty coping with adversity in BPD. RECENT FINDINGS: A scoping literature search identified 177 records, of which 12 studies met the inclusion criteria. Patients with BPD consistently exhibit lower resilience scores compared to mentally healthy control groups, with higher BPD features linked to red…

Influence of Childhood Maltreatment on Schizoid Personality Pathology.

Schizoid personality disorder (SPD) is among the most enduring forms of personality pathology. Research suggests that one factor associated with schizoid pathology is childhood maltreatment, although it is unclear which specific experiences of childhood maltreatment may be most impactful. In this study, we examined associations between different experiences of childhood maltreatment (e.g. physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, and physical and emotional neglect) and schizoid pathology in a sample of men and women recruited online (N = 327) using a Bayesian approach to structural equation model…

Lewis Carroll's personality and the possibility of epilepsy.

Lewis Carroll's classic Alice in Wonderland describes Alice's fantastical experiences so similarly to the actual phenomenology of the eponymous syndrome, that it has been previously suggested that Carroll himself experienced it. The syndrome is mostly associated with migrainous aura, and naturally, Carroll was postmortemly "diagnosed" as a migraineur. However, when considering his unique personality profile, it appears that he might have had temporal lobe epilepsy.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has become an integral part of many contemporary technologies, such as social media platforms, smart devices, a … ins inconclusive. Likewise, it is still unclear if attitudes towards AI are also affected by users' personality traits. In response to these research gaps, we offer a two-fold contribution. First, we present a novel, psychologically informed questionnaire (ATTARI-12) that captures attitudes towards AI as a single construct, independent of specific contexts or …
