The prognostic utility of personality traits versus past psychiatric diagnoses: Predicting future mental health and functioning.

Past psychiatric diagnoses are central to patient case formulation and prognosis. Recently, alternative classification models such as the Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology (HiTOP) proposed to assess traits to predict clinically-relevant outcomes. The current study directly compared personality traits and past diagnoses as predictors of future mental health and functioning in three independent, prospective samples. Regression analyses found that personality traits significantly predicted future first onsets of psychiatric disorders (ΔR2=06-.15), symptom chronicity (ΔR2=.03-.06), and func

Personality dimensions in persons symptomatically at risk of psychosis: pronounced but lacking a characteristic profile.

AIM: Personality dimensions are frequently abnormal in psychosis. We examined if these abnormalities form a personality profile that is characteristic for patients symptomatically at risk of psychosis. METHODS: Four higher order personality dimensions were assessed in 104 at-risk patients, 67 clinical and 97 healthy controls with the 'Dimensional Assessment of Personality Pathology', and analysed by two-step cluster procedure to detect personality profiles. Logistic regression was used to test for predictors of profile assignment. RESULTS: Low and high scorers were distinguished by two profi

The Prevalence of Comorbid Personality Disorders in Treatment-Seeking Problem Gamblers: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

The aim of this study was to systematically review and meta-analyze the prevalence of comorbid personality disorders among treatment-seeking problem gamblers. Almost one half (47.9%) of problem gamblers displayed comorbid personality disorders. They were most likely to display Cluster B disorders (17.6%), with smaller proportions reporting Cluster C disorders (12.6%) and Cluster A disorders (6.1%). The most prevalent personality disorders were narcissistic (16.6%), antisocial (14.0%), avoidant (13.4%), obsessive-compulsive (13.4%), and borderline (13.1%) personality disorders. Sensitivity anal

Personalities of adults with traumatic childhood separations.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined personality characteristics and identified personality subtypes of adults with childhood histories of traumatic separations from a parent. Previous work from attachment theory and developmental psychopathology suggests that distinct developmental trajectories might lead to different styles of personality adaptation after an attachment disruption. design: Randomly selected psychologists and psychiatrists provided data on 203 adults with histories of traumatic separations using a personality pathology instrument designed for use by clinically experienced observers

A dimensional approach to personality in atypical depression.

The current study addresses the relationship of personality and atypical depression using the Five-Factor Model (FFM), a dimensional approach to personality. The aim of the study was to help clarify which personality traits are more characteristic of atypical depression than of other depressive subtypes. Outpatients (n=160) with non-psychotic major depression were characterized as having atypical (n=26), or non-atypical depression (n=134) based on DSM-IV criteria. To limit the effect of state depression, personality was assessed after subjects received a minimum of 14 weeks of antidepressant t

Interpersonal problems across levels of the psychopathology hierarchy.

We examined the relationship between psychopathology and interpersonal problems in a sample of 825 clinical and community participants. Sixteen psychiatric diagnoses and five transdiagnostic dimensions were examined in relation to self-reported interpersonal problems. The structural summary method was used with the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems Circumplex Scales to examine interpersonal problem profiles for each diagnosis and dimension. We built a structural model of mental disorders including factors corresponding to detachment (avoidant personality, social phobia, major depression), in

Correlation between personality type and vocal pathology: A nonrandomized case control study.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: In this study we have made an attempt to find out if there is any correlation with type of personality (type A or B) and incidence of vocal pathology, subsequent to a tendency of vocal abuse. We also noted the loudness of speech and rate of speech for both personality types and compared these parameters for each personality type. STUDY DESIGN: A total of 100 subjects (50 with vocal pathologies and 50 with normal vocal folds) underwent voice and personality assessment, and the above-mentioned factors were compared with statistical methods. RESULTS: It was found that sub…

A randomized controlled trial of community-oriented and hospital-oriented care for discharged psychiatric patients: influence of personality disorder on police contacts.

An important forensic psychiatric measure, contacts with police, was compared in a randomized, controlled trial of 155 patients with severe mental illness with a previous admission within the past two years. The patients, who also had their personality status addressed formally before randomization, were allocated to community multidisciplinary teams or to hospital-based care programs after discharge from in-patient care and were followed up for one year. A total of 138 patients (89%) had at least one post-baseline assessment and of these patients, 16 (12%) had at least one police contact in t

Differences between personality functioning, normal-range traits, and maladaptive traits: Replication in a longitudinal Norwegian sample.

The alternative model of personality disorders has gained widespread recognition, yet the degree of conceptual and empirical overlap among personality functioning, maladaptive traits, and normal-range personality traits-and its implications for clinical assessment-remains debated. Recent studies have begun to examine these associations in a more systematic manner; however, longitudinal evidence is still limited, and the generalizability of existing findings remains insufficiently tested. In this preregistered study, we conducted a conceptual replication of 11 preregistered hypotheses originall

Trait Anger, Physical Aggression, and Violent Offending in Antisocial and Borderline Personality Disorders.

Antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD) are common conditions in forensic settings that present high rates of violence. Personality traits related to the five-factor model personality domains of neuroticism and agreeableness have shown a relationship with physical aggression in nonclinical and general psychiatric samples. The aim of the present investigation was to examine the association of these personality traits with violence and aggression in ASPD and BPD. Results revealed that trait anger/hostility predicted self-reported physical aggression in 47

DSM-III personality disorders in generalized anxiety, panic/agoraphobia, and obsessive-compulsive disorders.

In an earlier report, we stated that personality profiles of patients with panic disorder/agoraphobia (n = 187) and obsessive-compulsive disorder ([ODC] n = 51) were similar, albeit more pronounced in OCD, suggesting that the link between panic disorder/agoraphobia and DSM-III personality disorders (PDs) or traits may be nonspecific. The present report extends the comparative study of DSM-III PDs/traits, as assessed by the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire (PDQ), by adding a third diagnostic group of 39 patients with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). The personality assessment of panic di…
