Fear of public speaking is a widespread phenomenon that afflicts a large percentage of the population. Some working people will go to great lengths to avoid having to speak before a group; however, inability or unwillingness to speak in public can contribute to limiting an individual's promotional possibilities and thus capping a career at a level beneath the individual's technical abilities. This can be especially true in an arena such as health care in which oral communication in group settings figures so strongly in work relations. Yet anyone can overcome speaking fear through thorough prep

This commentary attempts to clarify the nature of contemporary associative accounts of phobias, and to describe how they might contribute to the explanation of the diversity of phobic aetiologies. It is argued that conditioning-equivalent associations underpin all phobic conditions, and that the role of experimental psychopathology research is to determine how these associations are acquired. The commentary then proceeds to discuss some of the theoretical problems with the nonassociative account of phobias as it is currently described by Poulton and Menzies, and to suggest that some interpreta

Social phobia is the most common anxiety disorder in the community with a prevalence rate in the range of 5-8%. The problem most often emerges in childhood or adolescence. Individuals with generalized social phobia are at risk of developing other psychiatric disorders such as major depression, alcohol abuse and other anxiety disorders. Sufferers of social phobia often do not seek treatment until they encounter difficulty with comorbid disorders. Recent research indicates that social anxiety disorder is associated with higher levels of disability and greater reductions in quality of life than p

A phobia is an excessive fear or dread of a situation or object which is out of keeping with the danger it may actually present. Phobias can be classified into 'simple phobias', 'social phobias' and agoraphobia. A number of psychological theories have been put forward to account for both the onset and maintenance of a phobia. The case of a social phobia is presented together with a cognitive behavioural intervention package.

BACKGROUND: A recent meta-analysis provides evidence that generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is familial. However, two of the key studies re … ntial confounding by major depressive disorder (MDD) and several anxiety disorders (panic disorder, phobic disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder).
RESULTS: The odds ratios for the association between GAD in a proband and GAD in an FDR were in the range 1.4-1.8 when the entire FDR sample was analysed, and in the range 2.1-2.8 …

Looming vulnerability pertains to a distinct cognitive phenomenology characterized by mental representations of dynamically intensifying danger and rapidly rising risk as one projects the self into an anticipated future [J. Pers. Soc. Psychol. 79 (2000) 837]. While looming appraisals can be experienced as state elicitation, some individuals are hypothesized to develop an enduring cognitive pattern of cross-situational looming appraisals, the looming maladaptive style (LMS), which functions as a cognitive vulnerability to anxiety. In the present study, we examined the extent to which the LMS pr

BACKGROUND: The mental health impacts of long-term ambient benzene exposure remain incompletely understood. We aim to investigate the association between long-term exposure to low-concentration ambient benzene and mental disorders in the general population.
METHOD: Estimated annual benzene concentrations from UK-wide air pollution maps were linked to health data from 410,605 eligible UK Biobank participants. A nested case-control analysis was performed to assess the risk of all-cause and ten specific mental disorders, using 1:4 risk-set matching with replacement (matching each case to up to f

OBJECTIVE: To study the prevalence and risk factors of anxiety disorders in the older (55-85) population of The Netherlands.
METHOD: The Lo … s estimated at 10.2%. Generalized anxiety disorder was the most common disorder (7.3%), followed by phobic disorders (3.1%). Both panic disorder (1.0%) and obsessive compulsive disorder (0.6%) were rare. These figures are roughly similar to previous findings. Ageing itself did not have any impact on the prevalence in both bivariate and multivariate analyses. The i …
