Nitric oxide (NO) is an efficient inhibitor of cell proliferation. Here we show that part of the antiproliferative activity of NO in fibroblasts is mediated through p53 signaling pathway. Early in an infection the bloodstream forms of the African trypanosome Trypanosoma brucei brucei are long, slender and rapidly dividing. Later, non-dividing, short, stumpy forms may be found. The enzymes responsible for the phosphorylation of deoxyadenosine and nucleoside analogs are important in the pathogenesis of adenosine deaminase deficiency and in the activation of specific anticancer and antiviral drugs.
