Low Intensity TMS Enhances Perception of Visual Stimuli.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a popular functional mapping tool in cognitive and sensory neuroscience. While strong TMS typically degrades performance, two recent studies have demonstrated that weak TMS, delivered to visual cortex, can improve performance on simple visual tasks. The improvement was interpreted as the summation of visually-evoked and TMS-elicited neuronal activity in visual cortex, but the nature of this interaction remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: The present experiments sought to determine whether these weak pulses of TMS assist subjects to see the visual

The role of prefrontal and parietal cortices in esthetic appreciation of representational and abstract art: a TMS study.

To explain the biological foundations of art appreciation is to explain one of our species' distinctive traits. Previous neuroimaging and electrophysiological studies have pointed to the prefrontal and the parietal cortex as two critical regions mediating esthetic appreciation of visual art. In this study, we applied transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) over the left prefrontal cortex and the right posterior parietal cortex while participants were evaluating whether they liked, and by how much, a particular painting. By depolarizing cell membranes in the targeted regions, TMS transiently in

Nonvisual and visual object shape representations in occipitotemporal cortex: evidence from congenitally blind and sighted adults.

Knowledge of object shape is primarily acquired through the visual modality but can also be acquired through other sensory modalities. In the present study, we investigated the representation of object shape in humans without visual experience. Congenitally blind and sighted participants rated the shape similarity of pairs of 33 familiar objects, referred to by their names. The resulting shape similarity matrices were highly similar for the two groups, indicating that knowledge of the objects' shapes was largely independent of visual experience. Using fMRI, we tested for brain regions that rep

Antiphasic 40 Hz oscillatory current stimulation affects bistable motion perception.

When viewing ambiguous stimuli, conscious perception alternates spontaneously between competing interpretations of physically unchanged stimulus information. As one possible neural mechanism underlying the perceptual switches, it has been suggested that neurons dynamically change their pattern of synchronized oscillatory activity in the gamma band (30-80 Hz). In support of this hypothesis, there is correlative evidence from human electroencephalographic (EEG) studies for gamma band modulations during ambiguous perception. To establish a causal role of gamma band oscillations in the current stu

Prosodic boundaries delay the processing of upcoming lexical information during silent sentence reading.

Prosodic boundaries can be used to guide syntactic parsing in both spoken and written sentence comprehension, but it is unknown whether the processing of prosodic boundaries affects the processing of upcoming lexical information. In 3 eye-tracking experiments, participants read silently sentences that allow for 2 possible syntactic interpretations when there is no comma or other cue specifying which interpretation should be taken. In Experiments 1 and 2, participants heard a low-pass filtered auditory version of the sentence, which provided a prosodic boundary cue prior to each sentence. In Ex

Interval timing in children: effects of auditory and visual pacing stimuli and relationships with reading and attention variables.

Motor timing tasks have been employed in studies of neurodevelopmental disorders such as developmental dyslexia and ADHD, where they provide an index of temporal processing ability. Investigations of these disorders have used different stimulus parameters within the motor timing tasks that are likely to affect performance measures. Here we assessed the effect of auditory and visual pacing stimuli on synchronised motor timing performance and its relationship with cognitive and behavioural predictors that are commonly used in the diagnosis of these highly prevalent developmental disorders. Specifying theories of developmental dyslexia: a diffusion model analysis of word recognition.

The nature of word recognition difficulties in developmental dyslexia is still a topic of controversy. We investigated the contribution of phonological processing deficits and uncertainty to the word recognition difficulties of dyslexic children by mathematical diffusion modeling of visual and auditory lexical decision data. The first study showed that poor visual lexical decision performance of reading disabled children was mainly due to a delay in the evaluation of word characteristics, suggesting impaired phonological processing. The adoption of elevated certainty criteria by the disabled r

Perceptual training narrows the temporal window of multisensory binding.

The brain's ability to bind incoming auditory and visual stimuli depends critically on the temporal structure of this information. Specifically, there exists a temporal window of audiovisual integration within which stimuli are highly likely to be bound together and perceived as part of the same environmental event. Several studies have described the temporal bounds of this window, but few have investigated its malleability. Here, the plasticity in the size of this temporal window was investigated using a perceptual learning paradigm in which participants were given feedback during a two-alter

Attention and visual texture segregation.

Visual texture segregation is believed to be performed preattentively. Recent evidence, however, suggests that attention does play an important role. Using visual evoked potentials (VEPs), we investigated the effect of different tasks on texture segregation. Stimuli consisted of Gabor-filtered binary noise patterns. In segregated stimuli, local texture orientation contrasts defined global checkerboard patterns. VEP responses specific to texture segregation were obtained by computing the difference between VEPs to homogeneous and segregated stimuli. Four conditions were examined that required a

Control of retinal information coding by GABAB receptors.

The directional selectivity of amacrine and ganglion cells was studied using conventional intracellular recording techniques and drug application in the superfused retina-eyecup preparation of the tiger salamander. Baclofen, a GABAB receptor agonist, enhanced normal directional responses in some directionally selective third-order neurons. In about 30% of the cells that were not normally directional, baclofen induced direction-selective responses. This effect was particularly marked when 2-amino-4-phosphonobutyrate (APB) was used to isolate the OFF pathway. Comparisons of the effects of APB an

Is there a neural common factor for visual illusions?

It has been reported that the surface area of the human primary visual cortex predicts the susceptibility to several spatial contextual illusions. Yet, contrary to common belief, illusions correlate only weakly at the perceptual level, raising the question of how they can correlate with a neural measure like V1 surface area. In addition, mounting evidence suggests that there is substantial interindividual variability not only in neural function and anatomy but also in the mapping between the two, which further challenges the findings of a neural common factor for illusions. In light of these c

Ocularity modulates the dominance of spatial over temporal influences in binocular rivalry.

The perception of a binocular rivalry (BR) stimulus can be influenced by other stimuli in temporal or spatial proximity. Here, we investigate how spatial (surround inhibition [SI]) and temporal context (flash suppression [FS]) interact. Previously, we modulated these influences by varying surround contrast in SI and timing parameters in FS. In the present study, we make use of the fact that the strengths of the two contexts can also be manipulated in the same way, namely by modulating ocularity. We varied FS strength by showing the prime to the same eye as the identical probe or to the other e

Specific expertise from diffuse feedback: A feedforward-gated mechanism.

Perceptual learning improves sensory sensitivity through practice but is typically specific to trained stimuli. Two contrasting accounts have been proposed: fine-tuning of feature-selective neurons in early sensory cortex, which raises a stability-plasticity dilemma, and reweighting of stable sensory inputs by higher-level readout. To reconcile these views, we recorded neuronal populations in macaque visual area V4 during training on a camouflaged collinear contour detection task. Behavioral improvements were strictly orientation specific, yet learning-related neural enhancements were unexpect

Whole-brain, all-optical interrogation of neuronal dynamics underlying gut and vascular interoception in zebrafish.

To select behaviors appropriate to their circumstances and needs, animals integrate information about the external environment with information about the state of their bodies, derived from sensing and processing internal signals (interoception). However, the brain-wide circuit activity underlying interoception and its integration with sensorimotor processing remains unclear, partly because of technical barriers to accessing whole-brain activity at the cellular level during physiological perturbations. We developed an all-optical system for whole-brain neuronal imaging in behaving larval zebra

BIVIP: a competitive neural network for bilateral visuo-haptic processing.

Visuo-haptic interactions are gaining interest in perception research because of their relevance to robotics and rehabilitation. While the benefits of integrating concurrent visuo-tactile cues are well-documented, the temporal dynamics of competitive interactions between vision and touch remain less understood. Building on extant empirical evidence of unilateral intersensory switching, we ask whether bilateral detection of visual and tactile stimuli can be explained by cross-sensory competition and explore the underlying sensorineural dynamics via a multi-level neural network model. Tested aga

Computational optimization of two-photon holographic stimulation sitesin vivo.

Objective.Determining the intricate structure and function of neural circuits requires the ability to precisely manipulate circuit activity. Two-photon holographic optogenetics has emerged as a powerful tool for achieving this via flexible excitation of user-defined neural ensembles. However, the precision of two-photon optogenetics has been constrained by off-target stimulation (OTS), an effect where proximal non-target neurons can be unintentionally activated due to imperfect spatial confinement of light onto target neurons. New approaches are therefore needed to resolve the OTS problem.Appr

Presaccadic suppression is reduced for antisaccades.

Visual sensitivity is reduced immediately before and during saccadic eye movements, but the mechanisms underlying this suppression are not fully understood. One influential account proposes that an extraretinal signal associated with saccade preparation, such as a corollary discharge, contributes to suppression by actively modulating visual processing. If so, suppression should depend on not only saccade kinematics but also the neural processes underlying movement planning. We tested this prediction using the antisaccade task, in which preparatory activity in superior collicular neurons has be

Visual and tactile motion cues enhance the categorisation of novel object shapes.

Object categorisation is a fundamental cognitive process, involving the integration of information across the senses. We investigated, using smartphones, whether visual and tactile motion cues could enhance object category learning and generalisation to novel object shapes. Two categories of similar shapes were associated with specific correlated visual and tactile vibration motion cues. After learning object categories, participants were assessed on categorisation of learned and novel objects across four cue conditions: shape-only, shape-visual motion, shape-tactile motion, and shape-visual a

Apparent-length expansion in whole contours and isolated parts: evidence for configuration-dependent processing.

The visual system overestimates the length of structured contours relative to adjacent empty intervals of the same physical size. This study examined whether apparent-length expansion occurs across isolated contour parts as well as complete objects, and whether the expansion of the whole can be predicted from that of its components. Observers matched the perceived horizontal extent of complete pentagons, incomplete pentagons with one or two missing segments, isolated apices, pedestals, parallel line pairs, and rectangles using an adjustment method. All stimulus types produced consistent positi
