Twenty-six patients with leg ulcers with a mean age of 80 years were assessed at a day hospital to determine the aetiology and to carry out a trial of four-layer compression bandaging for those suitable. Ten had ankle brachial pressure indices (ABIs) < 0.8. Of nine patients with venous disease who received compression bandaging, only two ulcers healed and have remained healed with fitted below-knee elastic stockings. In a cross-sectional survey of the quality of life of 45 liver transplant recipients, physical and psychological status, physical complaints, capability to participate in daily life, social support, and global quality of life were assessed. Norm-referenced and criterion-referenced approaches to setting a standard, or minimum passing score, were used with the pilot Part II National Board Dental Examination. The criterion-referenced approach used with the pilot is based on the Rasch measurement model. The standards and associated failure rates were found to be similar for both approaches. These findings as well as the advantages associated with using the Rasch model suggest that this criterion-referenced approach to setting a standard on the restructured Part II examination is appropriate.

The ability to identify smells was tested in nine males and six females with motor neuron disease (MND) of varying severity, using the University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test (UPSIT). The olfactory impairment found in MND patients compared with age and sex matched controls is statistically significant at the 0.005 level. The relationship with Parkinson's disease, with Alzheimer's dementia and the possible aetiological implications of this new aspect of the MND are discussed.

Because people with diabetes may be at increased risk of glaucoma, we performed a pilot study using automated visual field testing for screening them. One hundred and seventy-six diabetic persons who had participated in the Wisconsin Epidemiologic Study of Diabetic Retinopathy were tested with the Armaly-Drance screening pattern on the Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer. A government-funded pilot project of high volume screening mammography was conducted in Vancouver, British Columbia. 7,100 women were screened over a 9-month period, averaging 43 women per day at a cost of $33.81 per woman screened. 722 (10%) had abnormal mammograms; 144 received breast biopsies; and 29 were diagnosed with cancer. The overall cancer detection rate was 4.1 per 1,000 (0.8 and 4.8 for incident and prevalent cases, respectively). The staging distribution for the 29 cancer cases was 5, 15, 8 and 1 for in situ, stage I, II and III, respectively.

In this multicentre pilot study of sulphasalazine in juvenile chronic arthritis, the mode of onset and course of the disease, and when available, the HLA status, was recorded on the entry form. At the request of the local office of the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) we established a centre which offered a multidisciplinary rehabilitation programme consisting of a full assessment and an eight week individually planned and monitored fitness programme.
