["One and a half syndrome" caused by lateral pontine haemorrhage].

"One and a half syndrome" is an internuclear ophthalmoplegia combined with lateral gaze palsy on the same side. It is caused by ipsilateral lesion of the caudal part of pontine dorsal tegmentum - medial longitudinal fasciculus and paramedian pontine reticular formation or/and abducens nucleus. Usually it is of vascular origin and it can be a sign of lateral pontine haemorrhage. We described a patient with "one and a half syndrome" caused by spontaneous hypertensive hemorrhage in the lateral pontine legmentum which was visualised by brain CT scanning.

Extensive extrapontine and central pontine myelinolysis associated with correction of profound hyponatraemia.

The relationship between correction of hyponatraemia and the development of central pontine myelinolysis (CPM) remains controversial. A case of CPM associated with extensive extrapontine demyelination is described. Profound hyponatraemia and its subsequent correction are documented. It is suggested that the extent of demyelination reflects the degree of hyponatraemia noted prior to correction, supporting current hypotheses regarding the role of hyponatraemia in CPM. This case is unusual in that other recognized risk factors for the development of CPM are absent.

Morphological effects of VIth nerve section in the kitten as revealed by horseradish peroxidase.

The effects of the chronic section of the VIth nerve have been studied in kittens with the help of the horseradish peroxidase intra-axonal retrograde tracing method. Two months following the section of the VIth nerve, only 50% of the abducens motoneuron population was left. However, shapes, somata sizes and cell distribution through the nucleus of the remaining neurons were similar to those shown by controls. Functional implications of the findings are discussed.

The distribution of primary afferents to the cochlear nuclei in the domestic hen (Gallus domesticus).

The normal anatomy of the three cochlear nuclei in the hen, the nucleus laminaris, the nucleus angularis and the nucleus magnocellularis is described. Following lesions of the cochlear nerve, all three nuclei are shown to receive primary cochlear fibers (silver impregnation methods). The part of nucleus laminaris which consists of a ventral convex sheet of cells is shown to receive cochlear nerve fibers from both ears, the nerve fibers from the ipsilateral ear terminating dorsal to the cell sheet while contralateral nerve fibers terminate ventral to the nerve cells. The cochlear ganglion cells

Pure motor hemiplegia secondary to brain-stem tumour.

'Pure motor hemiplegia' is a common stroke syndrome defined by Fisher as paralysis of face, arm, and leg on one side, unaccompanied by sensory signs, visual field defect, aphasia, or apractognosia. It occurs almost exclusively in hypertensive patients and carried a good prognosis. We report a case of a normotensive patient in whom pure motor hemiplegia was the presenting feature, not of a cerebrovascular syndrome, but of a pontine glioblastoma. We note that brain-stem tumours may masquerade as brain-stem strokes.

Smart, Gravity-Driven, Dual-Mode, Disposable Evanescent Wave Fluorescent Optofluidic Bio-Nanochip for Rapid and Sensitive Point-of-Need Testing of Trace Pollutants.

The decentralization of biosensing to point-of-need (PON) settings necessitates single-use devices that combine laboratory-level sensitivity with field-deployable simplicity. Existing fluorescent optofluidic chips achieve high sensitivity but rely on bench-top optics, pumps, and trained personnel. Here, we present a smart, disposable evanescent wave fluorescent optofluidic bio-nanochip (DEFOB) that bridges this performance gap. The DEFOB integrates a gravity-driven, 3D-printed microfluidic chip with a functionalized tapered fiber nanosensor, a compact alignment-free all-fiber optical reader, a

Anti-biofilm efficiency and substrate specificity of recombinantly produced human paraoxonases.

The human paraoxonase (PON) gene family, comprising PON1, PON2, and PON3, has evolved through parallel evolutionary trajectories leading to … lowed by huPON3 and huPON1. A comparative assessment of the anti-biofilm potential of recombinant huPONs was conducted against Mycobacterium smegmatis, which revealed that all three paraoxonases inhibited biofilm formation; however, huPON2 displayed the highest anti-biofilm activity, followed by huPON3 and huPON1. Additionally, all the huPONs showed a …

Clinical outcomes in patients in any phase of CML treated with ponatinib in France-Data from the TOPASE observational study.

The TOPASE study was set up to evaluate the outcomes of chronic myeloid leukaemia [CML] patients treated with ponatinib (PON) in a real-world setting in France. One hundred and twenty CML patients, 105 in chronic phase (CP), 8 in accelerated phase (AP) and 7 in blastic phase (BP) were included. Fifty-one (49%) of the CP-CML patients were in third line of treatment. The trigger for PON initiation in CP-CML was 'poor response' in 67 patients, 'poor tolerance' in 28 patients and 'response enhancement' in seven patients. The median dose at initiation was 30 mg/day [Q1; Q3 = 15; 30] in CP-CML and 4…

Seasonal differences in the intensity of acute phase response in dogs infected with Babesia canis.

The highest number of acute Babesia canis cases in dogs is recorded over the February-May (Feb-May) period, which also represents the optimal climate conditions for tick activity in Belgrade, Serbia. A possibility that the acute phase response is more intense in dogs developing the disease in the Feb-May period compared with the response in other time periods of the year was tested. A total of 63 client-owned dogs with acute B. canis infection were enrolled and the routine hematology and biochemistry parameters-serum amyloid A (SAA), IgG against B. canis, level of parasitemia, ceruloplasmin (C…

Blood and semen paraoxonase-arylesterase activities in normozoospermic and azoospermic men.

Paraoxonase and arylesterase enzymes are corner stones of antioxidant defence. We aimed to compare azoospermic infertile men and normozoospermic individuals with respect to total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS), oxidative stress index (OSI), paraoxonase and arylesterase levels in the blood and seminal plasma. Two-hundred consecutive infertility patients and voluntarily participated were included. In the normozoospermic group, TAS, PON, arylesterase values were statistically significantly higher when compared with those in the azoospermic group, while lower TOS and OSI leve

Directed evolution of serum paraoxonase PON3 by family shuffling and ancestor/consensus mutagenesis, and its biochemical characterization.

Serum paraoxonases (PONs) are calcium-dependent lactonases with anti-atherogenic and detoxification functions. Here we describe the directed evolution and characterization of recombinant variants of serum paraoxonase PON3 that express in an active and soluble manner in Escherichia coli. These variants were obtained by combining family shuffling and phylogeny-based mutagenesis: the limited diversity of accessible, cloned PON3 genes was complemented by spiking the shuffling reaction with ancestor/consensus mutations, mutations to residues that comprise the consensus or appear in the predicted an…

Distribution and morphology of serotonin-immunoreactive neurons in the brainstem of the New Zealand white rabbit.

The aim of the present study was to demonstrate the morphology and distribution of the serotonergic neurons in the brainstem of the New Zealand white rabbit by using a highly specific immunocytochemical procedure. It was possible to divide the serotonergic neurons into a rostral group, which is situated in the mesencephalon and the rostral part of the pons containing four serotonergic nuclei, and a caudal group, which is located in the medulla and the caudal part of the pons containing five serotonergic nuclei. The localization of the serotonergic neurons is presented in a detailed brainstem a…

Signature of paraoxonases in the altered redox homeostasis in Alzheimer's disease.

Paraoxonase (PON) enzymes (PON1, PON2 and PON3) exert antioxidant properties through arylesterase, lactonase and paraoxonase activities. Inc … tasis in the 3xTg-AD female mice may be related to an early reduction in activity and expression of PONs enzymes most likely via a reduced brain arylesterases activity.
