Incidence, characteristics, and outcome of solitary plasmacytoma and plasma cell leukemia. Population-based data from the Swedish Myeloma Register.

Solitary plasmacytoma (SP) and plasma cell leukemia (PCL) are uncommon (3-6%) types of plasma cell disease. The risk of progression to symptomatic multiple myeloma (MM) is probably important for the outcome of SP. PCL is rare and has a dismal outcome. In this study, we report on incidence and survival in PCL/SP, and progression to MM in SP, using the prospective observational Swedish Multiple Myeloma Register designed to document all newly diagnosed plasma cell diseases in Sweden since 2008. Both solitary bone plasmacytoma (SBP) (n=124) and extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) (n=67) have better

Clinical characteristics of adrenal crisis in adult population with and without predisposing chronic adrenal insufficiency: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Adrenal crisis (AC) occurs in various clinical conditions but previous epidemiological studies in AC are limited to chronic adrenal insufficiency (AI) and sepsis. The aim of this study was to investigate characteristics of AC patients, including predisposing diseases and to describe candidate risk factors for AC such as comorbidities and glucocorticoid (GC) therapy. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using a claims database on 7.4 million patients from 145 acute care hospitals between January 1, 2003 and April 30, 2014. We identified AC patients who met the followi

Relationship between blood eosinophils and clinical characteristics in a cross-sectional study of a US population-based COPD cohort.

BACKGROUND: Current evidence suggests that blood eosinophil levels (Eos) are associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) treatment response and natural history. This analysis investigated the relationship between Eos levels and clinical characteristics in a representative cohort of US subjects with spirometry-defined COPD. METHODS: Cross-sectional data from the National Health And Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES 2007-2010) of subjects ≥ 40 years with spirometry-defined COPD and Eos data (n = 948) were analyzed. Differences in clinical characteristics by Eos level (≤ 2%,

Socio-demographic and clinical characteristics of heavy and non-heavy smokers among schizophrenia inpatients in a Chinese Han population.

OBJECTIVE: Despite higher smoking rates in schizophrenia, few studies have explored the clinical-demographic correlates of different amounts of smoking exposure. Little is known about the association between smoking severity and clinical phenotypes in Chinese patients with schizophrenia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We investigated differences between heavy (≥1 pack/day) and non-heavy (<1 pack/day) smoking in 550 male inpatients with schizophrenia using clinician-administered questionnaires and the Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence. They also were rated on the Positive and Negative Symptom Sc

Incidence, clinical characteristics and 30-day mortality of enterococcal bacteraemia in Denmark 2006-2009: a population-based cohort study.

Enterococci currently account for approximately 10% of all bacteraemias, reflecting remarkable changes in their epidemiology. However, population-based data of enterococcal bacteraemia are scarce. A population-based cohort study comprised all patients with a first episode of Enterococcus faecalis or Enterococcus faecium bacteraemia in two Danish regions during 2006-2009. We used data collected prospectively during clinical microbiological counselling and hospital registry data. We determined the incidence of mono- and polymicrobial bacteraemia and assessed clinical and microbiological characte

Thirty-year population-based review of childhood renal tumours with an assessment of prognostic features including tumour DNA characteristics.

We have reviewed all paediatric kidney tumours seen in the West Midlands Health Authority Region over a 30-year period. There were 205 cases confirmed after a review of the pathology by three paediatric pathologists. Seven were cases of bone metastasising renal tumour (clear cell sarcoma), 5 were rhabdoid tumours, 2 were renal cell carcinomas, and 13 were mesoblastic nephromas. In 3 cases, it was not possible to define further the histological diagnosis. The remaining 175 cases were considered to be Wilms' tumour (86%), which is equivalent to an incidence of 5.7/10(6)/year. In the cases of Wil
