A 24-year-old black woman developed polymyositis with autoantibodies to threonyl-tRNA synthetase in the 2nd trimester of her 3rd pregnancy. This was complicated by fetal loss and the development of severe relapsing myositis resistant to corticosteroid and azathioprine therapy. These features were also common in other cases in the literature. Antisynthetase antibodies had not been reported in myositis occurring during pregnancy and may be of interest regarding the pathogenesis of inflammatory myopathy complicating pregnancy.

We examined tyrosine kinase activity of epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor in a total of 34 human gastric carcinomas as well as in non-neoplastic gastric mucosa from the same patients. EGF receptor kinase activity of the carcinoma tissues and the non-neoplastic mucosa were 1.28 +/- 1.00 (Mean +/- S.E.) and 0.16 +/- 0.04 respectively, if the EGF receptor kinase activity of human placenta is 10. We have examined a patient with progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS) who had increased serum T3 (235 ng/dl) and T4 (13.2 micrograms/dl) and low 24-h thyroidal 123I-uptake (1.2%).
