Relationship between prepregnancy BMI and the concentrations of iron, calcium, and magnesium in serum and hair during the first trimester of pregnancy in women.

BACKGROUND: In women of childbearing age, a low dietary supply of iron, calcium, and magnesium is often observed. Minerals deficiency in pregnant women is often associated with abnormal body weight and may impact fetal development disorders. The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between prepregnancy body mass index (BMI) and the dietary intake of iron, calcium and magnesium and their concentrations in serum and hair in pregnant women. METHOD: The study involved 97 Caucasian/white low-risk pregnant women at 12 weeks of gestation. The analysis of minerals in serum and hair samp

Alteration in IFN-γ and CCL2 serum levels at first trimester of pregnancy contribute to development of preeclampsia and fetal growth restriction.

OBJECTIVE: Pregnancy is a unique challenge for the immune system. Any disturbance in the immune system in the first trimester could result in further pregnancy complications. In this regard, the current study aimed to investigate the association between serum levels of a group of cytokines in the first trimester of pregnancy with the onset of preeclampsia (PE) and fetal growth restriction (FGR). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Serum samples were collected from 550 pregnant women at their 11th - 13th weeks of pregnancy and followed up to delivery. Out of all cases, 15 women complicated with preeclampsi

Platelet to lymphocyte and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio in the first trimester of pregnancy, are they useful for predicting spontaneous miscarriage? A case-control study.

BACKGROUND: In 15% of all clinical pregnancies, a miscarriage can occur, but the exact cause of this phenomenon is not fully understood. However, it is believed that a faulty placenta, which triggers an inflammatory response in the mother's body, may be one of the causes. Medical literature has increasingly focused on 2 indicators of inflammation, the platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR). Despite this, there has yet to be a study conducted that examines the rates of PLR and NLR in cases of miscarriage. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to determine whether there is a

Maternal isolated hypothyroxinemia in the first trimester is not associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes, except for macrosomia: a prospective cohort study in China.

OBJECTIVE: Insufficient thyroid hormone levels during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester, adversely affect maternal and fetal health. However, the impact of isolated hypothyroxinemia (IH) on adverse pregnancy outcomes remains controversial. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the association between IH during the first trimester and adverse pregnancy outcomes. METHODS: This prospective cohort study included 1236 pregnant women. Thyroid-stimulating hormone and free thyroxine levels were measured before 13 weeks of gestation. Logistic regression analysis and the Cochran-Armitag

Comparison of the clinical efficacy of surgical versus medical method for first trimester pregnancy termination in Iran: A quasi-experimental research.

BACKGROUND: The surgical and medical options for management of pregnancy termination procedures are acceptable in practice but differ in clinical efficacy, costs, and patient experiences, and deciding what the best method is not clear always. This study aimed to compare clinical efficacy, outcomes, and patient acceptance of dilatation and curettage (D and C) versus medical abortion using misoprostol for first trimester of gestation in Iranian context. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective, multicenter, quasi-experimental research conducted from July 2021 to January 2022. The primary outcomes w

The clinical outcomes of selective and spontaneous fetal reduction of twins to a singleton pregnancy in the first trimester: a retrospective study of 10 years.

BACKGROUND: Singleton pregnancy is encouraged to reduce pregnancy complications. In addition to single embryo transfer (SET), selective and spontaneous fetal reduction (SEFR and SPFR) can also achieve singleton pregnancies. After SEFR or SPFR, an inanimate fetus remains in the uterus. It is unclear whether the inanimate fetus would adversely affect another fetus or the mother. Previous studies have focused on the differences between pre- and post-reduction. However, studies focusing on the influence of SEFR and SPFR on the remaining fetal development and maintenance of pregnancy are rare. MET

First-trimester maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein is not a good predictor for adverse pregnancy outcomes: a retrospective study of 3325 cases.

BACKGROUND: It is well known that second-trimester maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein (MS-AFP) is a predictor for adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs), such as preterm birth, stillbirth, preeclampsia and small for gestational age (SGA). However, it is unknown whether first-trimester MS-AFP is also predictive of APOs. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the data on the first-trimester MS-AFP levels and pregnancy outcomes of 3325 singleton pregnant women. The cutoff value of 2.5 multiple of the median (MoM) was used to evaluate the risks of APOs regarding MS-AFP. The receiver operating characterist

Increased Circulating Levels of Tissue-Type Plasminogen Activator Are Associated with the Risk of Spontaneous Abortion During the First Trimester of Pregnancy.

Spontaneous abortion is a common complication in early pregnancy, with an incidence of around 20%. Ultrasound scan and measurement of human chorionic gonadotropin are used to identify patients at risk of spontaneous abortion; however, there is a clinical need to find new biomarkers to prospectively identify patients before the onset of clinical symptoms. Here, we aim to investigate potential biomarkers of spontaneous abortion taken in the first clinical appointment of pregnancy. A case-control study was conducted based on a prospectively collected cohort in which cases and controls were retros

Combination of "Markers" and the Consequent Importance of Fetal Abdominal Circumference in the First Trimester for Predicting Complications Specific to Monochorionic Twin Pregnancies.

BACKGROUND: Multifetal pregnancies are considered high-risk pregnancies compared to singleton pregnancies. Monochorionic diamniotic (MCDA) twin pregnancies tend to have a more complicated intrauterine course than their dichorionic counterparts. The most common complications are twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS), selective fetal growth restriction (sFGR), and unexplained intrauterine fetal demise (IUFD). Early recognition of pregnancies at risk of developing complications will be helpful for counselling the parents and preparing them for necessary interventions in case a complication ari

Maternal Dietary Intakes, Red Blood Cell Indices and Risk for Anemia in the First, Second and Third Trimesters of Pregnancy and at Predelivery.

As anemia remains a major public health problem in Ghana, we examined the effect of dietary intakes, and antenatal care (ANC) practices on red cell indices and anemia prevalence during the pregnancy continuum for 415 women. Dietary history was taken using the Food and Agriculture Organization minimum dietary diversity indicator for women (MDD-W). Intake of ≥5 food groups was a proxy for micronutrient adequacy. Odds for anemia and meeting the MDD-W were estimated using ordinal and binary logistic regressions respectively. Intakes of 41.4% were micronutrient inadequate. At any time point in preg

Risk of congenital cytomegalovirus infection in children born to women with IgG avidity in the grey zone during first trimester of pregnancy.

INTRODUCTION: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is the most common congenital viral infection and is regarded as the leading nongenetic cause of sensorineural hearing loss. Currently, international consensuses discourage prenatal screening of pregnant women. However, in few countries mainly in Southern Europe, screening of pregnant women for CMV infection is common practice. Management of women found with IgG+/IgM + and IgG avidity titers in the grey zone during first trimester causes significant stress to both families and health care workers. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Pregnant women referred to our outpati
