Why have prison scholars so seldom discussed what people in prison think about their crimes? This article addresses a striking gap: the omission of the originating reason for incarceration - the offence - from sociological analyses of carceral life. We examine its past treatment in prison scholarship and argue for recentring it. Drawing on three case studies, we show how the offence actively shapes daily experience, institutional engagement, and social dynamics. Our framework explores how attention to the offence can illuminate what prisons are like, what they do through moral communication, a…

BACKGROUND: TB incidence in prison populations exceeds surrounding communities by factors of up to 100. Early case detection in correctional systems is constrained by gaps in health care worker training and inconsistent application of diagnostic algorithms. Structured clinical mentorship may strengthen diagnostic performance, although evidence from Kenyan correctional settings remains limited.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective evaluation across 20 prison health facilities in Kenya, comparing TB indicators during 4-month pre- and post-intervention periods following a 3-month clinical mento

BACKGROUND: In Malawi, women in prisons make up 2.7% of the total prison population. However, the experiences of women incarcerated are not well documented in the literature. We aim to describe the experiences of women incarcerated in a Malawian prison facility. We will concentrate on the qualitative findings that highlight the unique perspectives of these women, including those in which they are imprisoned alongside their children, as well as the larger implications for child welfare and prison policy.
METHODS: A qualitative approach using descriptive study design was used to explore the exp…

Artificial intelligence (AI)-empowered data processing tools improve our ability to assess, measure, and enhance medical interventions. AI-based tools automate the extraction of data from histories, test results, imaging, prescriptions, and treatment outcomes, and transform them into unified, accessible records. They are powerful in converting unstructured data such as clinical notes, magnetic resonance images, and electroencephalograms into structured, actionable formats. For example, in the extraction and classification of diseases, symptoms, medications, treatments, and dates from even inco

INTRODUCTION: Self-harming behavior in prisoners is a prevalent phenomenon, with international studies estimating a 4% prevalence rate. However, studies on self-injurious behavior in the German prison system are currently lacking. Therefore, our study aims to conduct an initial assessment.
METHODS: The Criminological Service for the Berlin Prison System distributed questionnaires on incidents of self-harm to all Berlin prisons, except for juvenile detention centers. The questionnaires were supplemented with medical data, such as psychiatric diagnoses and medication.
RESULTS: 62 questionnaire…

Although the majority of incarcerated individuals are younger, there is a growing population of aging adults within the prison setting. It has been recognized that most correctional facilities are not built to house older adults, which has led to constraints and challenges being placed on this population. Understanding how best to respond to older adults in correctional facilities has gained popularity among researchers and politicians. Humblet's book The Older Prisoner (2021) explores the effects prison life has on the aging generation. This book examines the concept of age and the benefits a

A person-centered approach to advance care planning is recognized as a fundamental need, yet its routine implementation remains a challenge across disparate settings, such as prisons. The purpose of this study was to gain the perspectives of people who are incarcerated about advance care planning. Four focus groups were conducted with people living in 1 men's and 1 women's state prison (n = 26). Handwritten field notes were taken, transcribed, deidentified, and verified before the completion of independent thematic analysis by 2 experienced qualitative researchers. Key themes regarding advance…

The conflict between individual and collective interests makes fostering cooperation in human societies a challenging task, requiring drastic measures such as the establishment of sanctioning institutions. These institutions are costly because they have to be maintained regardless of the presence or absence of offenders. Here, we revisit some improvements to the standard N-person prisoner's dilemma formulation with institutional punishment in a well-mixed population, namely the elimination of overpunishment, the requirement of a minimum number of contributors to establish the sanctioning insti

In 2011, a historic Supreme Court decision mandated that the state of California substantially reduce its prison population to alleviate overcrowding, which was deemed so severe as to preclude the provision of adequate healthcare. To comply, California passed the Public Safety Realignment Act (Assembly Bill [AB] 109), representing the largest ever court-ordered reduction of a prison population in U.S. history. AB109 was successful in reducing the state prison population; however, although the policy was precipitated by inadequate healthcare in state prisons, no studies have examined its effect…

In Washington v. Harper, the U.S. Supreme Court established that an administrative review conducted by prison staff was the minimum constitutionally appropriate due process for the administration of compulsory nonemergent antipsychotic medication. California's current process, Penal Code section 2602 (PC2602), uses a judicial review allowing for either emergent (medication beginning with application) or nonemergent routes. This article describes the history culminating with PC2602, beginning with the notion of civil death enacted in 1850, followed by the 1986 Keyhea injunction. Framed by probl

INTRODUCTION: Synthetic cannabinoids (i.e. Spice) are a major public health problem in UK prisons, however, research in this area is limited. Here we aimed to draw comparisons between people with and without experience of using synthetic cannabinoids in prison, to characterise the features of, and motivations for use within this setting and evaluate support for different treatment interventions.
METHOD: Questionnaires were administered to 122 people in a category-B prison for adult males in England between July 2022 and March 2023. Participants were asked questions related to their sociodemog…

OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy of real-time continuous glucose monitoring (CGM; intervention) with capillary blood glucose (CBG) monitoring (control) alone to achieve greater percent glucose time in range (%TIR) among pregnant individuals diagnosed gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: This was an open-label, single-center, randomized controlled trial of pregnant individuals with GDM and ≥20 weeks' gestation. Subjects were randomly assigned (2:1) to use real-time CGM plus adjunctive CBG versus CBG alone for glucose monitoring. The intervention group was instruc

INTRODUCTION: An outbreak of exogenous thyrotoxicosis is an uncommon cause of thyrotoxicosis. This study aimed to investigate the characteristics and outcomes of exogenous thyrotoxicosis and electrolyte imbalance in a prison during an outbreak of exogenous thyrotoxicosis in the Phitsanulok, Thailand prison.
METHODS: This study collected cross-sectional data during an outbreak of thyrotoxicosis among inmates at Phitsanulok prison between 29 December 2019 and 17 January 2020. In the first phase, a total of 2815 prisoners were screened for thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), potassium levels and
