Platelets, Chromogranin A, and C-Reactive Protein Predict Therapy Failure of Metastatic Hormone-Sensitive Prostate Cancer while miR-375 Outperforms Prostate-Specific Antigen in Stratifying Castration-Resistant Prostate Cancer.

Androgen deprivation therapy has long been the first-line treatment for hormone-sensitive prostate cancer (HSPC). After progression to castr … 75 were measured by quantitative PCR. Sixteen other clinical markers were also evaluated, including prostate-specific antigen (PSA), chromogranin A (CGA), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), C-reactive protein (CRP), lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio, and platelet count. A multivariate analysis, adjusted for age and metastatic dissemination, identified miR- …

The Hype and the Hope: Where Do We Stand with Prostate-specific Membrane Antigen-targeted Fluorescence-guided Surgery?

Early studies highlight the promise of prostate-specific membrane antigen-targeted fluorescence-guided surgery. Realization of the full potential of this strategy will require ongoing technical refinement and the integration of hybrid-guided approaches, supported by high-quality clinical evidence, to translate feasibility into meaningful oncological benefits.

Quantitative Determination of Prostate-Specific Antigen in Forensic Samples Using Antibody Microarrays on 3D Plasma Nanotextured Polymeric Slides.

Semen identification in forensic samples using prostate-specific antigen (PSA) overcomes limitations of conventional methods such as UV illumination and spermatozoa detection. In this study, we describe an antibody microarray for the quantitative immunochemical detection of PSA in forensic samples using 3D oxygen plasma-nanotextured polymer-coated glass slides. The analytical performance of these substrates was compared with that of silane-modified glass slides and demonstrated improved intra- and inter-spot homogeneity, as well as an extended linear dynamic range. Based on the 3D nanotextured…

Elevated prostate specific antigen due to indwelling urethral catheterisation: myth or fact? A systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION & OBJECTIVES: Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing is central to prostate cancer diagnosis, yet values may be confounded by urethral catheterisation. Misinterpretation of PSA rises can prompt unnecessary investigations or delay critical diagnoses. We systematically evaluated what the effect of urethral catheterisation in adult men is on serum PSA levels when compared to pre-catheterisation values. METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, Embase, and Scopus through July 2025 was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. Eligible studies included adult males with pre- and p…

Serum Prostate-Specific Antigen Concentrations in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: A Comparative Analysis of Hirsute and Non-Hirsute Phenotypes.

OBJECTIVE: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), affecting 5-10% of reproductive-aged women, is marked by anovulation and hyperandrogenism. Prostate-specific antigen (PSA), traditionally a prostate cancer biomarker, has also been detected in female tissues and proposed as a marker of androgen activity. This study examined whether serum total and free PSA differ between hirsute and non-hirsute PCOS phenotypes, hypothesizing higher levels in the hirsute group. METHODS: In this prospective case-control study, 90 women with PCOS diagnosed by the 2003 Rotterdam ESHRE/ASRM criteria were enrolled betwee…

Association between red blood cell distribution width to albumin ratio and prostate specific antigen based on NHANES data.

As the most common cancer in men in the United States, risk factors for prostate cancer (PCa) need to be identified. Serum prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels are used for the screening of prostate cancer due to its association with the disease. Investigations have indicated that the risk of prostate cancer determined based on PSA can be further stratified on the basis of total PSA (tPSA) and f/t PSA. Further, the red blood cell distribution width-to-albumin ratio (RAR) has recently been identified as a novel biomarker for multiple inflammatory diseases. The relationship between RAR and PSA

Prostate-Specific Membrane Antigen Expression in Colorectal Cancer and Its Potential Implication in Disease Monitoring in Rectal Cancer.

PURPOSE: Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) is expressed in tumor-associated vessels of diverse malignancies, such as colorectal cancer (CRC). PSMA-targeted approaches show promise for diagnosing, treating, and assessing therapy response in non-prostatic cancer. Disease monitoring following neoadjuvant chemoradiation (CRT) is especially important in rectal cancer. METHODS: Firstly, clinical and histologic features of untreated CRC (n = 237; 54 from rectum) were examined for their association with PSMA expression. Secondly, rectal cancer cases following neoadjuvant CRT (n = 45) were ret

Lessons from the implementation of the Australian 2016 prostate specific antigen testing clinical practice guidelines: a descriptive study.

INTRODUCTION: In 2025, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in Australia, regardless of gender, and is the second most common cause of cancer death despite the opportunities for cure. In 2016, Australian Clinical Practice Guidelines for Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) testing were published to improve early detection and management of prostate cancer. This study reports on a public consultation into the implementation and impact of these guidelines on prostate cancer diagnosis and outcomes. METHODS: Thematic analysis of responses from a public consultation conducted in accordance with be

The efficiency of prostate-specific antigen density measurement using three different methods on the prediction of biochemical recurrence.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) density (PSAD) calculated through prostate volume (PV) obtained via transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and actual prostate weight (PW) methods obtained via pathological evaluation on the prediction of biochemical recurrence (BCR) in the follow-ups of patients who had undergone radical prostatectomy (RP). METHODS: A total of 335 clinically localized prostate cancer (PCa) patients who had received open RP between January 2015 and December 2018 were enrolled in the …

Comparison of Prostate-Specific Membrane Antigen Expression Levels in Human Salivary Glands to Non-Human Primates and Rodents.

Background: Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) has emerged as a promising target for developing radionuclide therapy (RNT) in prostate cancer; however, accumulation of PSMA-RNT in salivary glands can result in irreversible xerostomia. Methods to prevent PSMA-RNT-related xerostomia could be clinically useful; however, little is known about PSMA expression in salivary glands of preclinical animal models. Using [18F]DCFPyL autoradiography/biodistribution, PSMA expression levels were determined in salivary glands of various preclinical monkey and rodent species and compared with humans. Met

[68 Ga]Ga-Prostate-Specific Membrane Antigen PET/CT: a novel method for imaging patients with hepatocellular carcinoma.

PURPOSE: Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) is not only highly expressed on the surface prostate cancer cells but is also elevated during angiogenesis in other cancer cell types, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of using PET/CT imaging with [68Ga]Ga-PSMA-11 in HCC and its impact on patient management. METHODS: Fifteen patients (13 men and two women; aged 55.6 ± 18.2 years) with HCC were enrolled in this prospective, single-institution study. All patients underwent contrast-enhanced MRI/CT, [68Ga]Ga-PSMA-11 PET/CT, and histopathologi

Abdominal Splenosis Mimicking Peritoneal Metastasis in Prostate-Specific Membrane Antigen PET/CT, Confirmed With Selective Spleen SPECT/CT.

Ga-prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) PET/CT is a rapidly evolving diagnostic technique to image prostate cancer. In contrast to the name PSMA, various tissues show Ga-PSMA uptake in PET/CT imaging. We present a case of a 68-year-old man with prostate cancer who underwent Ga-PSMA PET/CT. Along with metastatic lymph nodes, multiple nodular lesions within the peritoneal spaces of all 4 quadrants of the abdomen showed high PSMA expression. Because of a history of splenic rupture, a Tc-labeled heat-denatured erythrocyte scintigraphy and SPECT were performed. Peritoneal lesions showed high u

Reactions of potential jurors to a hypothetical malpractice suit: alleging failure to perform a prostate-specific antigen test.

We conducted focus groups with 47 potential jurors who were presented with different scenarios in a hypothetical malpractice case involving failure to order a PSA test. Better documentation that a patient made an informed decision to decline a PSA test appeared to provide more medical-legal protection for physicians, especially with the use of a decision aid.

Randomised controlled trial on whether advance knowledge of prostate-specific antigen testing improves participant reporting of unprotected sex.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether the process of informing research participants that they would be tested for the presence of a biological marker of semen exposure would reduce bias in their reports of unprotected sex. METHODS: A randomised trial of 210 female sex workers from Mombasa, Kenya, was conducted, where half the group had advance knowledge (via the request for informed consent) that they would be tested for prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in their vaginal fluid before they reported on sex and condom use for the past 48 h. The other half were invited to participate (via additional in…

Expression of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and human glandular kallikrein 2 (hK2) in ileum and other extraprostatic tissues.

Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a widely used marker for prostate cancer. In the literature, there are reports of nonprostatic expression of PSA that potentially can affect early diagnosis. However, the results are scattered and inconclusive, which motivated us to conduct a more comprehensive study of the tissue distribution of PSA and the closely related protein human glandular kallikrein 2 (hK2). RT-PCR, in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry were used to detect expression of both PSA and hK2 in secretory epithelial cells of trachea, thyroid gland, mammary gland, salivary gland, j…
