Radiographic marginal bone level evaluation around two different tissue-level implant systems: a one-year prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Marginal bone loss, is a frequently reported variable in the evaluation of dental implants. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate radiographic marginal bone level changes around the two different tissue-level implant systems placed adjacently in the posterior maxilla or mandible. The influence of implant macro-geometry and vertical soft tissue thickness on marginal bone loss were also evaluated. METHODS: Seven patients were included in the study and a total of 18 implants were analyzed. Each patient received two different implants placed adjacently in the maxilla or

A deep learning framework for understanding cochlear implants.

Sensory prostheses replace dysfunctional sensory organs with electrical stimulation but currently fail to restore normal perception. Outcomes may be limited by stimulation strategies, neural degeneration, or suboptimal decoding by the brain. We propose a deep learning framework to evaluate these issues by estimating best-case outcomes with task-optimized decoders operating on simulated prosthetic input. We applied the framework to cochlear implants - the standard treatment for deafness - by training artificial neural networks to recognize and localize sounds using simulated auditory nerve inpu

Restoring Function and Esthetics in Complete Edentulism: A Case Report of Implant-Supported Hybrid Denture.

Complete edentulism significantly affects the esthetics, function, and quality of life of the elderly. Implant-supported hybrid dentures are superior to conventional removable prostheses in terms of stability, esthetics, and masticatory function. This case report details the dental rehabilitation of a 75-year-old female patient seeking total dental restoration. Clinical evaluation revealed partial edentulism in both arches accompanied by residual root stumps. Eight endosseous implants were placed in the maxilla and seven in the mandible following a delayed loading protocol to ensure optimal os

Radial head reconstruction in elbow fracture-dislocation: monopolar or bipolar prosthesis?

BACKGROUND: Monopolar and bipolar radial head prosthetic arthroplasties have been used successfully to treat elbow fracture-dislocation with unsalvageable radial head fractures. The relative stability of these two designs in different clinical situations is a topic of ongoing investigation. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We tested the effects of monopolar and bipolar fixed-neck prosthetic radial head implants on improvement in elbow coronal and axial plane laxity in a terrible triad biomechanical model that accounted for lateral collateral ligament integrity and the presence of a transverse coronoid fra

Biomechanical comparison of newly designed stemless prosthesis and conventional hip prosthesis--an experimental study.

Local bone loss after implantation of traditional stem-type prostheses remains an unsolved problem during the long-term application of total hip replacement. The stress shielding effect and osteolysis were thought to be the two main factors that result in local bone loss after prosthesis implantation. A newly designed stemless cervico-trochanteric (C-T) prosthesis was thus developed to reduce stress shielding and osteolysis caused by the implantation of conventional stem-type prosthesis. Eight synthetic femora were implanted with C-T and porous coated anatomic (PCA) prostheses. Under 2,000-New

[Studies on blood traumatization following heart-valve prosthesis].

In 47 patients blood traumatisation was checked after interventions on cardiac valves. The cases in question were: 34 implantations of valve prostheses, 10 valve reconstructions and 3 re-operations because of paravalvular leakages. The tested valve prostheses according to Starr-Edwards, Björk-Shiley and Beall revealed subclinical haemolyses of various degrees. In aortic position the values for Björk-Shirley prostheses showed advantages as compared to the Starr-Edwards valve. Of all tested valve types the Beall prostheses caused the highest blood traumatisation. Manifest haemolytic anaemia was

Distribution, metabolism, excretion, and toxicity of implanted silver: a review.

Some implantable medical devices contain silver. We aimed to assess at what amount implanted silver becomes toxic. Silver was elevated in bodily fluids and tissues surrounding silver-containing implants. Silver released from implants also distributes to blood and other tissues; there is evidence to suggest silver can pass the blood-brain-barrier. Silver can be deposited as nano-sized particles in various tissues. Such particles, in addition to silver, often contain other elements too, e.g., selenium and sulfur. Silver released from implants seems to stay in the body for long periods (years). R

Computer-aided design and manufacturing construction of a surgical template for craniofacial implant positioning to support a definitive nasal prosthesis.

AIM: To design a surgical template to guide the insertion of craniofacial implants for nasal prosthesis retention. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The planning of the implant position was obtained using software for virtual surgery; the positions were transferred to a free-form computer-aided design modeling software and used to design the surgical guides. A rapid prototyping system was used to 3D-print a three-part template: a helmet to support the others, a starting guide to mark the skin before flap elevation, and a surgical guide for bone drilling. Severe Maxillectomy Defect Rehabilitation with an Implant-Retained Obturator Prosthesis: A Case Report.

Conventional obturator prostheses might cause dissatisfaction in patients with hard or soft palate defects due to inadequate retention and function during speech, mastication, and swallowing. Thus, surgical reconstruction and implant-supported obturators are considered as alternative treatments for these patients. This case-report study describes the prosthetic reconstruction of an 88-year-old patient suffering from a hard palate defect after surgical resection of verrucous carcinoma in the left side of the hard palate. Fifteen months after radiotherapy, two implants were placed in the right s

Rehabilitation of a bulimic patient using endosteal implants.

This article describes the dental rehabilitation of a bulimic patient using endosteal implants. Although the patient, a 31-year-old woman with a long history of bulimia nervosa, had been receiving medical and psychological treatment, the condition was not completely controlled. Clinical examination revealed multiple crowns with extensive cervical caries. The prognosis for all remaining teeth was poor. After extractions, implant therapy was implemented to provide support for fixed prostheses. After the implants were uncovered and during provisional therapy, the peri-implant tissue exhibited inf

Ergonomic Implants: A Single Centre Experience in Post-Mastectomy Breast Reconstruction.

Background and Objectives: Implant-based breast reconstruction is nowadays the most commonly used reconstructive technique and offers a safe and relatively simple surgical approach. Textured, anatomically shaped implants have been the primary option for women undergoing breast reconstruction for decades. However, anatomically shaped implants are form-stable devices, providing firmness and rigidity, and can cause malrotation, requiring revision surgery. Ergonomic round silicone gel implants began to gain popularity due to the capacity to adapt to gravity and the patient's position, providing a

Early clinical results with the hydroxyapatite-coated porous long-term stable fixation total hip system.

The design and early clinical results with uncemented porous-coated long-term stable fixation anatomic and midstem total hip systems (Implant Technology, Inc, Secaucus, NJ) are described. In an ongoing Food and Drug Administration-approved Investigational Device Exemption-Premarket Approval Program, a random selection method is used to determine patients receiving implants with a hydroxyapatite (HA) coating applied to the porous surface and those receiving uncoated implants. The early clinical results with the HA-coated systems show them to appear superior to the uncoated systems. A greater pe
