Parental divorce and neuroendocrine changes in adolescents.

Plasma noradrenaline (NE), adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH), growth hormone (GH), prolactin (PRL) and luteinizing hormone (LH) concentrations were examined in basal conditions and after stimulation by the step test in two groups of psychophysically healthy adolescent girls, 18 from divorced families and 16 from non-divorced families. Basal NE, ACTH, GH, PRL values did not differ in the two groups, whereas those of LH were significantly lower in the adolescents from divorced parents than in those from non-divorced families. Responses of NE and ACTH to the stimulus were normal, of GH and PRL

Prescriptive hearing aid fitting by parameter adjustment and selection.

We describe the rationale for the development of a psychophysical procedure that allows individual listeners to adjust the frequency-gain characteristic of a programmable hearing aid on a unidimensional scale, based on a target-gain reference value. The listener's task is to adjust the frequency response and select the parametric value judged to optimize the intelligibility or quality of speech. Originally described as the Sliding Scale, the procedure has been modified for use in reliability and validity studies of hearing aid fitting at Michigan State University. The modified approach is refe

Automated static perimetry and nerve fibre layer defects in glaucoma and controls.

Correlation of psychophysical tests and structural changes is essential in the management of glaucoma. We compared the mean sensitivity and the short-term fluctuation in eyes with and without defects in the retinal nerve fibre layer in 41 glaucoma patients and 40 controls. In the glaucoma group 87.2% of eyes with visual field defects and 42.3% without visual field defects showed nerve fibre loss. In the control group 36.3% showed nerve fibre loss. In manifest glaucoma the mean sensitivity was 10.9 +/- 7.2 dB in eyes with nerve fibre loss and 19.2 +/- 3.9 dB in eyes without nerve fibre loss. Th

[Costs and benefits in the follow-up of abdomino-perineal amputation of the rectum for cancer].

A cost/benefit analysis has been carried out of the follow-up of abdomino-perineal amputation of the rectum for cancer in the light of the objectives pursuable with this practice and the diagnostic techniques available today. As regards early diagnosis of a return of the disease, it is necessary to distinguish between long-term recurrence, hepatic or pulmonary for example, in relation to their greater potential capacity for surgical exeresis and local pelviperineal recurrences which are more rarely susceptible to radical exeresis in spite of the introduction of computed tomography and nuclear

Clinical and electrophysiological features of tilted disc syndrome.

Nine patients with tilted disc syndrome were examined psychophysically and electrophysiologically. Visual field defects did not correspond to fundus abnormalities in half of the eyes. Visual evoked responses were more reduced than electroretinogram responses. These results indicate that associated visual field defects and impairment of visual acuity were related not only to a localized staphylomatous ectasia of the posterior globe but also to a lesion of the inner retinal layer, optic nerve, or more proximal visual pathway. This suggests that a developmental abnormality in the embryonic retina

Evaluating visual loss with multi-flash campimetry.

Multi-flash campimetry is a computer-implemented psychophysical technique that allows temporal resolution to be assessed in 120 points per eye in a half hour. It has previously been reported that the results can serve to distinguish between multiple sclerosis patients and control subjects. We have now used this technique to measure temporal resolution in patients with amblyopia, cataracts, optic neuritis or macular degeneration. Our results indicate that multi-flash campimetry is at least as sensitive to visual loss in patients with amblyopia or cataracts as visual acuity testing with the Snel

Effects of d-amphetamine and naloxone on brain stimulation reward.

Self-stimulation thresholds were determined in rats by means of a modification of the psychophysical method of limits. Reinforcement values were determined after the administration of d-amphetamine alone, naloxone alone, and naloxone administered concurrently with d-amphetamine. d-Amphetamine yielded dose-related decreases in the threshold (0.25--2.00 mg/kg IP), while naloxone alone (2.0--16 mg/kg IP) caused no consistent changes. For each animal, a dose of d-amphetamine that substantially lowered the threshold was then selected to be administered with varying doses of naloxone. The threshold-

Within-subjects ultra-short sleep-wake protocol for characterising circadian variations in retinal function.

Prior studies suggest that visual functions undergo time-of-day variations. Under naturalistic entrainment, diurnal changes in physiology may be driven by circadian and/or homeostatic processes, and repeated measurements at different times of day are thus not suitable to draw unambiguous conclusions about circadian effects on visual function. In this study, we disentangle circadian and homeostatic effects on variations of retinal function. We examine the earliest stages of image-forming (temporal contrast sensitivity of the post-receptoral channels) and non-image forming visual functions (pupi

Comparative Quantification of Fungiform Papillae Density and Taste Perception in Anemic and Healthy Controls: A Case-Control Study.

Background Taste perception is crucial for dietary choices, nutrition, and overall health. The human tongue, particularly the fungiform papillae, plays a significant role in taste sensation, especially for sweet and umami flavors. Anemia, a common condition characterized by low hemoglobin levels, can affect sensory perception, including taste. Recent research has begun to explore the relationship between fungiform papillae density and taste perception in individuals with anemia. Objective This study aimed to investigate the comparative quantification of fungiform papillae density and its corre

Abnormal activation patterns in MT+ during visual motion perception in major depressive disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have found that patients with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) exhibit impaired visual motion perception capabilities, and multi-level abnormalities in the human middle temporal complex (MT+), a key brain area for processing visual motion information. However, the brain activity pattern of MDD patients during the perception of visual motion information is currently unclear. In order to study the effect of depression on the activity and functional connectivity (FC) of MT+ during the perception of visual motion information, we conducted a study combining task-state fMR

Endogenous pain modulation assessed with offset analgesia is not impaired in chronic temporomandibular disorder pain patients.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal endogenous pain modulation (EPM) was suggested as a pathophysiological characteristic of chronic pain. EPM has been investigated using psychophysical tests for pain facilitation and inhibition such as temporal summation of pain and conditioned pain modulation, respectively. Another psychophysical test for pain inhibition is offset analgesia (OA), where small variations in noxious stimulus intensity over time elicit a disproportionately large analgesic response. OA has been investigated in patients with mixed pain conditions, but not in chronic temporomandibular disorder (T

Potency of descending pain modulatory system is linked with peripheral sensory dysfunction in fibromyalgia: An exploratory study.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is characterized by chronic widespread pain whose pathophysiological mechanism is related to central and peripheral nervous system dysfunction. Neuropathy of small nerve fibers has been implicated due to related pain descriptors, psychophysical pain, and neurophysiological testing, as well as skin biopsy studies. Nevertheless, this alteration alone has not been previously associated to the dysfunction in the descending pain modulatory system (DPMS) that is observed in FM. We hypothesize that they associated, thus, we conducted a cross-sectional exploratory study. To explore sm

Chronic tinnitus and unipolar brush cell alterations in the cerebellum and dorsal cochlear nucleus.

Animal model research has shown that the central features of tinnitus, the perception of sound without an acoustic correlate, include elevated spontaneous and stimulus-driven activity, enhanced burst-mode firing, decreased variance of inter-spike intervals, and distortion of tonotopic frequency representation. Less well documented are cell-specific correlates of tinnitus. Unipolar brush cell (UBC) alterations in animals with psychophysical evidence of tinnitus has recently been reported. UBCs are glutamatergic interneurons that appear to function as local-circuit signal amplifiers. UBCs are ab

Prestimulus Theta Oscillations and Connectivity Modulate Pain Perception.

UNLABELLED: The perception of pain is strongly influenced by cognitive processes, such as expectations toward the efficacy of pain medication. It is reasonable to assume that such processes, among other sources of fluctuation, are reflected in ongoing brain activity, which in turn influences perceptual processing. To identify specific prestimulus EEG activity, and connectivity patterns related to subsequent pain perception in humans, we contrasted painful with nonpainful sensations delivered at the individual threshold level determined by the psychophysical QUEST estimation method (Watson and

Magnocellular visual evoked potential delay with high autism spectrum quotient yields a neural mechanism for altered perception.

Everyone has autistic characteristics to a greater or lesser degree, encapsulated in the Autism Spectrum Quotient, a scale that measures the degree to which an adult of normal intelligence displays traits associated with autism spectrum disorders. Recent psychophysical analyses of autism spectrum disorders point to superior local processing, and impaired or ignored global and contextual processing. The aim of this study was to test whether low- and high-scoring individuals on the Autism Spectrum Quotient differ on a measure of local and global processing, motion processing and visual pathway i

Object Image Size Is a Fundamental Coding Dimension in Human Vision: New Insights and Model.

In previous psychophysical work we found that luminance contrast is integrated over retinal area subject to contrast gain control. If different mechanisms perform this operation for a range of superimposed retinal regions of different sizes, this could provide the basis for size-coding. To test this idea we included two novel features in a standard adaptation paradigm to discount more pedestrian accounts of repulsive size-aftereffects. First, we used spatially jittering luminance-contrast adaptors to avoid simple contour displacement aftereffects. Second, we decoupled adaptor and target spatia

Blocking tactile input to one finger using anaesthetic enhances touch perception and learning in other fingers.

Brain plasticity is a key mechanism for learning and recovery. A striking example of plasticity in the adult brain occurs following input loss, for example, following amputation, whereby the deprived zone is "invaded" by new representations. Although it has long been assumed that such reorganization leads to functional benefits for the invading representation, the behavioral evidence is controversial. Here, we investigate whether a temporary period of somatosensory input loss to one finger, induced by anesthetic block, is sufficient to cause improvements in touch perception ("direct" effects o

Representational pseudoneglect: a review.

Pseudoneglect, the tendency to be biased towards the left-hand side of space, is a robust and consistent behavioural observation best demonstrated on the task of visuospatial line bisection, where participants are asked to centrally bisect visually presented horizontal lines at the perceived centre. A number of studies have revealed that a representational form of pseudoneglect exists, occurring when participants are asked to either mentally represent a stimulus or explore a stimulus using touch in the complete absence of direct visuospatial processing. Despite the growing number of studies th
