Bridging healthcare gaps through public-private partnerships in Nigeria: a scoping review.

Nigeria's healthcare system faces several persistent structural challenges. Public-private partnerships (PPPs) have emerged as a strategy to address these gaps, although evidence on their implementation and impact remains fragmented. This scoping review mapped the implementation models, outcomes, challenges and future directions of PPPs in Nigeria's healthcare system, following the Arksey and O'Malley framework and PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Literature searches were conducted across PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar and grey literature sources. Studies were screened using Rayyan, whil

Differences in the morbidity of asthma in multi temperature zones under short-term exposure to air pollution: a systematic review.

Different geographical locations and climatic environments lead to different impacts of specific air pollutants on the relative risk (RR) of asthma morbidity (i.e., new-onset asthma, outpatient visits, emergency department visits, and hospital admissions) in the Northern Hemisphere. Therefore, it is necessary to integrate existing data to assess the impact of short-term exposure to pollutants on the RR of asthma morbidity in the Northern Hemisphere. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the effects of short-term exposure to particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10), sulfur diox

Strategies to Enhance Diagnostic Capabilities for the New Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis (DR-TB) Drugs.

The global burden of drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) continues to challenge healthcare systems worldwide. There is a critical need to tackle DR-TB by enhancing diagnostics and drug susceptibility testing (DST) capabilities, particularly for emerging DR-TB drugs. This endeavor is crucial to optimize the efficacy of new therapeutic regimens and prevent the resistance and overuse of these invaluable weapons. Despite this urgency, there remains a lack of comprehensive review of public health measures aimed at improving the diagnostics and DST capabilities. In this review, we outline strategies

Fiftieth Anniversary of Uncovering the Tuskegee Syphilis Study: The Story and Timeless Lessons.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the uncovering of the Tuskegee syphilis study, when the public learned that the Public Health Service (precursor of the CDC) for 40 years intentionally withheld effective therapy against a life-threatening illness in 400 African American men. In 2010, we learned that the same research group had deliberately infected hundreds of Guatemalans with syphilis and gonorrhea in the 1940s, with the goal of developing better methods for preventing these infections. Despite 15 journal articles detailing the results, no physician published a letter criticizing the T

(In)coherence between Chagas disease policy and the experiences of those affected in Mexico: The need for a transdisciplinary approach.

Chagas disease, caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, remains a significant public health challenge in México, symbolizing systemic neglect in healthcare. Despite longstanding efforts to control its transmission, there are critical gaps in the alignment of public health policies with the lived experiences of affected individuals. This study examines these dissonances by analyzing qualitative interviews with 61 individuals diagnosed with T. cruzi and reviewing relevant Mexican public health regulations, including national standards and action programs. Findings reveal that most diagnoses oc

Halving global road traffic deaths through targeted mitigation practices by 2050.

Road traffic deaths (RTD) are the leading cause of mortality and represent a serious threat to global health and sustainable development. By analyzing data from more than 190 countries covering the period from 2000 to 2021, we assessed the historical trends and key influencing factors of RTD across different regions and income groups. Global RTD rose from 1.16 million in 2000 to 1.28 million in 2012, then slightly declined to 1.17 million by 2021. Africa and low-income countries continue to bear the highest burdens. GDP per capita emerged as the most influential factor, reflecting the role of

Disease Elimination Is Not Eradication: Rethinking "Disease-Free" Certification in Global Health amid the Global Resurgence of Measles, Polio, and Cholera.

Disease elimination, as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO), denotes the sustained reduction of pathogen transmission to zero within a defined geographic area through ongoing public health intervention. In practice, however, certification of elimination status has frequently operated as a terminal designation, reshaping funding and signalling that a problem has been resolved. This perspective argues that such a conception is both scientifically untenable and operationally hazardous. Drawing on three concurrent, well-documented resurgences, measles across the Americas and Europe, cir
