Consumer participation in mental health in Australia: what progress is being made?

OBJECTIVE: Historically, people living with mental illness have had limited chance to participate in mental health services other than as patients. This has led to serious negative consequences for their health and wellbeing. Recent public policy has aimed at redressing this situation. This paper sets out to investigate the 'state of play' regarding consumer participation in mental health services. CONCLUSIONS: Consumer participation is not a common topic in the recent literature, despite the significant public policy push to promote it. Although the vision of public policy is for consumers t

Impact, use, and implications of artificial intelligence in public health decision making by elected officials: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Artificial intelligence (AI) offers considerable promise for strengthening governmental public health decision making by supporting rapid, comprehensive analysis of complex data. Although AI applications have been widely examined in clinical and academic settings, their use in public health agencies and policymaking remains less well understood. METHODS: This scoping review assessed how AI has been applied to support decision making by public health professionals and elected officials in both routine and crisis contexts. Using PRISMA-ScR guidelines, we searched PubMed, OAISTER,

Audit of suspected meningitis in a district in 1996-1997 and in 1999.

The Public Health Laboratory Service has published guidance outlining appropriate investigations and public health action to control the spread of meningococcal disease. We investigated compliance with this guidance in audits of suspected meningitis cases in our district notified to the public health department between January 1996 and December 1997, and in 1999. The total number of suspected meningitis cases in 1996-7 and in 1999 were 58 and 34 respectively. Meningococcal disease was suspected in 49 and 28 patients respectively, and for 58 (75.3%) of these case notes were found. Rash was more

Health Services and Infrastructure Recovery of a Major Public Hospital in Liberia During the 2014-2016 Ebola Epidemic.

During the 2014-2016 Ebola outbreak, health services in Liberia collapsed. Health care facilities could not support effective infection prevention and control (IPC) practices to prevent Ebola virus disease (EVD) transmission necessitating their closure. This report describes the process by which health services and infrastructure were recovered in the public hospital in Monrovia, Liberia. The authors conducted an assessment of the existing capacity for health care provision, including qualitative interviews with community members, record reviews in Ebola treatment units, and phone calls to hea

HPV Vaccination in Morocco: Quiet Progress or Public Health Failure?

Although the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine was integrated into Morocco's national immunization schedule in October 2022, its real impact remains difficult to assess due to the absence of accessible and official data, such as vaccination coverage, adherence rates, or public health impact. The absence of reliable data makes it difficult to assess the effectiveness of the program, and the extent of its impact in terms of population reach and geographic coverage remains unknown. Several studies conducted in Morocco have highlighted key barriers to the acceptance of the HPV vaccine. These incl

Bridging the Gap: research informing practice and policy for healthy youth behavior.

BACKGROUND: Bridging the Gap (BTG) is a collaborative research initiative supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Ten years ago, BTG was created to assess the impact of policies, programs, and other environmental influences on adolescent alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drug use and related outcomes. This multidisciplinary, multisite initiative examines these factors at multiple levels of social organization, including schools, communities, and states. More recently, the significant increases in obesity among children, adolescents, and adults led BTG to expand its efforts to include rese

Anthrax of domestic animals in Vrbas Banate: from traditional beliefs to the first scientific views on the ancient disease.

From 1929 to 1941, the Vrbas Banate was one of nine provinces of the Kingdom Yugoslavia, and according to historical data, the poorest one, without well-organized and sustainable agriculture production. Naturalistic production and poor animal health control in the Vrbas Banate were the most important risk factors for infectious disease spreading. Anthrax was very prevalent infectious disease in domestic animals and humans in that period, but some data on this disease remain scarce. In this paper epidemiology and clinical investigation of anthrax in the Vrbas Banate are reviewed. Apart from man

A cross sectional survey of knowledge, attitude and practices related to house flies among dairy farmers in Punjab, Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: House flies are of major public health concerns in areas with poor sanitation and hygienic conditions. Unfortunately, sanitation and hygiene have always been ignored in dairy farms particularly in the developing or low-income countries. Management of these flies mostly depends on the awareness regarding associated hazards and protective measures taken by the people to minimize risks associated with flies. The present study therefore explores the knowledge, attitude and practices taken by dairy farmers in Punjab, Pakistan against house flies. METHODS: The present study was based on

Reticence to prescribe: utilization of expedited partner therapy among obstetrics providers in Arizona.

Expedited partner therapy (EPT) is the practice of providing an extra dose or prescription of antibiotic to patients diagnosed with chlamydia or gonorrhoea to deliver to their sexual partner(s). Obstetrical providers who delivered more than 20 infants in Maricopa County, Arizona, USA, during the year 2008 were surveyed by telephone regarding their use of EPT. A total of 142 eligible respondents completed the survey, representing 34% (142/421) of the delivering providers, 67 (47%) of whom reported the use of EPT in their clinics. Having received information about EPT was significantly associate

Changes in public knowledge and attitudes to HIV/AIDS in Wales, 1987 to 1992.

This paper presents information on changes in public knowledge and attitudes to HIV/AIDS in Wales between 1987 and 1992. The results indicate that throughout this period the majority of adults in Wales were aware of the high risk of infection from sexual intercourse and sharing needles with, and coming into contact with the blood of, someone with HIV. Nevertheless, the proportion who said that sexual intercourse with someone with HIV carries a high risk declined, and in 1992 confusion still remained about the nature of HIV infection amongst a substantial minority of respondents. More than one

Feminism and Bourdieusian Social Theory in a Sexual Health Empowerment Project with Incarcerated and Recently Released Women.

Theory is often downplayed or omitted in the research and scholarly literature around public health interventions in carceral settings. Our Sexual Health Empowerment (SHE) project was an education intervention and ethnographic study that aimed to reduce cervical cancer risk among women with histories of incarceration. In this article, we describe our application of concepts from feminist theory and bourdieusian social theory to the design, planning, and delivery of SHE. We outline how theory-driven practice both underscored and helped us meet challenges in implementation in three urban jails o

Improving the quality of communicable disease control: the example of meningococcal disease.

Improving the quality of health services is central to current attempts to reform the National Health Service. The main approaches to quality improvement in communicable disease control to date have been the development of practice guidelines and audit projects. Descriptions of the impact of quality initiatives in public health generally and communicable disease in particular have been limited, objective measures of quality are rare and few reports outline improvements that have been achieved in practice. We describe a project to develop a set of quality indicators for meningococcal disease co

General Public Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice Regarding the Impact of Air Pollution and Cardiopulmonary Diseases in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Introduction Air pollution is a critical public health issue associated with various respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. The lungs and heart are the organs most affected by air pollution, and damage to these organs is strongly associated with inhaled particulate matter produced by burning fossil fuels. Household and ambient air pollution have been closely linked to lower respiratory infections, with ambient air pollution alone estimated to be responsible for millions of deaths globally each year. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the general public knowledge attitude and practice rega
